Make her shorter if you must

Since I’m a part of the the immense community that is fanfiction writing, I wanted to address something I see from time to time on my dash that I find problematic.

Unless someone asks for a critique, ask you to beta their work, or simply wish for you to do a quick edit, correcting someones spelling, grammar, and word usage is NOT okay. Why?

It’s Ableist.

ND people do not process information the same way that neurotypical people do. Do I know and understand English grammar? Yes, I do. Do I commonly make really dumb mistakes because my brain doesn’t like to communicate with my fingers properly? Also yes. If you’ve spoken to me in a personal setting (discord, private messaging, etc) then you probably know that my everyday language is full of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Part of this is my currently uncontrolled ADHD. Part if is due to processing disorder. My brain works faster than my fingers do so often times things get mixed up. I promise I know the difference between there, they’re, and their. Your and You’re. And so forth.

It’s Classist.

Not everyone has the same access to education as you do. I went to school in a low income school district. In America school funding is based largely off of property taxes which is why schools in higher income areas tend to be better because they have more funding. My school had very little of that and sometimes it shows. Also in countries were higher education is not free, many people can’t afford to get college degrees.

It’s Racist.

English isn’t everyone’s first language. Hell, it IS my first language and I’m often terrible at it because it’s so complicated. It doesn’t like to follow any set rules. It borrows shit from a ton of other languages. It’s difficult even for people who grew up in countries where it is the most dominant language.

Also English differs based on region, background, etc. AAVE is a valid dialect of English spoken by many in the US. That being said, if someone who you know is white is speaking it, then correcting them and teaching them about cultural appropriation is obviously the right way to go.

The Catholic Church regards her as a virgin for her peity despite the rape. (No matter your views on virginity this is a pretty interesting statement)
