Let’s delve into White Veganism & White Supremacy. (click for blog) Veganism is an interconnected movement that seeks to fight for the liberation of non-human animals and humans. To understand White Veganism, make sure you understand that the critique is on White supremacy in systems, practices, and beliefs. There has been an influx of White Vegan creators who have been perpetuating or upholding white supremacy, staying silent on social justice issues when asked to speak about it, and comparing traumatic historical events to animals' deaths. All of these characteristics are not new to the movement, but it’s time to hold people accountable for their actions. If there's one thing that social media has done, it has been to center whiteness in these movements and put these problematic creators on pedestals. First and foremost, White Veganism to me is a form of Veganism that focuses solely on animal liberation while ignoring the effects of colonization and how it is interconnected in the oppression of humans and animals. Furthermore, it portrays human supremacy as the main issue rather than addressing white supremacy and how it resulted in the abusive systems in animal agriculture. Many popular vegans are ignorant of or do not promote indigenous and cultural values, relationships with the land, and more BIPOC practices, movements, and struggles. White Veganism itself isn’t true Veganism. It lacks thousands of years of perspective that should inform our movement and our liberation. Acknowledging White Veganism and White Supremacy is the first step to creating intersectional change and promoting growth within yourself. Condemning white supremacy is something many platformed Vegans fail to do. Some comments I got: "I will admit that white supremacy exists around the world, but why should it fall on to vegans who are already fighting a noble cause to stop their efforts against one evil?" I can think of shorter ways to say "I don't feel like it". This is how systems of oppression and supremacy are upheld. A fundamental practice in activism should be continuous growth, improvement, and solidarity. The correct answer isn't "do I really have to?". The correct response is "how can I build an intersectional movement?" "Is there another term we can use though other than 'white vegans', bc not all vegans who are white are the problem?" If you're trying to remove your whiteness from the picture, you care more about your image than our liberation. This is 100% about white vegans and white veganism. White people don't get to remove themselves from the conversation by saying, "but I'm one of the good ones". We all hold different privileges that are all worth interrogating on the road to solidarity. -queer brown vegan
