I've been rereading Vast Error as of late in anticipation of its return next year, and I do think there is a possibility that Calder might be transfem down the line, as knee-jerk of a negative reaction that might instill in some girls (for good reason! I wasn't a fan until I reread either). It has that same kind of knee-jerk negative reaction that the transfem Jax (from The Amazing Digital Circus) reading initially did before it became increasingly obvious. I actually think Jax and Calder are in similar starting positions here, character wise.
Calder is an impenetrable, cold, calculated business man with defenses built up so high he is unrecognizable compared to the shy boy he was as a kid. He is explicitly a cis man in canon, as well as a misogynist. His life where we begin in the comic is built upon living up to his ancestor, the former tyrannical ruler of Repiton, the very obnoxiously named Caesar Consceleratus Persolus. Calder is essentially Repitons like, Barron Trump or something. Obviously nothing screams transfem here so far, but that's where I start to ask where his character is going to go as the comic progresses. I want to specifically look at the scene where he arrives at the palace on the Land of Murk and Quagmire where Arcjec (a TMA person, mind you!) grills him on knowing there's someone else below the impenetrable walls Calder has set up around himself.
First of all, Calder being disgusted with his land is interesting. Obviously these lands reflect the trolls in some way, and this could hint at a deeper self-hatred writhing inside him deep down.
This is very interesting to me. Vast Error literally has an ongoing joke with trans characters and their deadnames sucking. This could be me looking a bit too much into things, but remember that authors do specific things for specific reasons, which I would also like to reiterate for the next thing I want to bring up.
The painting of the woman Calder cant seem to shake his eyes away from in the eye-straining opulent palace is my smoking gun for this theory so far. The comic is literally telling you to question what this painting of a previous Void player on Calders land says about him.
Thinking about what the painting might mean about Calder gets him so upset and enraged he goes to push it off the wall, which reveals it to be a Mario-64-style portal that transports him far away from the palace, deep into the crust of his land. I do wonder if the other paintings in the palace were also portals of some kind.
This leads us directly into the conversation with Arcjec previously mentioned.
Before we even get into the conversation itself, its interesting that the panel parallels page 776, both characters cast in shadow, emphasizing their signs. Ellsees transfemininity is incredibly important to her character, as is Calders masculinity. Can you believe were this far into the post and I haven't even mentioned yet that Calders sign is literally the male symbol? Obviously there's going to be some weird gender shit going on with him.
Throughout the entire conversation, Calder diverts Arcjec elsewhere. When that doesn't work, he doubles down and tells Arcjec they are being delusional to suggest there is more to him than meets the eye.
And when that doesn't work either, he deflects with humor. All defenses are going off here.
Arcjec is literally referring to gender here, at least in some part. They are clocking "his" ass hard, pretty much telling Calder to stop trying to live up to the old tyrannical King his ancestor was, and just be his own damn person like he was before.
The conversation ends unceremoniously, with Calders defenses unfaltering, but we do see him visibly shaken afterwards here, sweating and adjusting himself, before answering Edolon. He gets even worse after said conversation. Things are going to plan according to Edolon, but Arcjecs words have really started to get under Calders skin.
Obviously this is a baby of a theory for now, as its based off one update and some hints throughout the comic, but when Vast Error returns I will be keeping a close eye on this guy. I do hope we get to see more of him and Ellsee and the kind of past they have together, as I feel his proximity to the most important transfeminine character who has the female sign, the "opposite" (Obviously female and male aren't opposites but you know what I mean here) sign, is interesting. This update, to me at least, was screaming in the faces of the audience that Calder has some gender shit going on he needs to work out by the end of the comic. Two things I would like to note before ending this post is that Calder is a Maid, a typically feminine class (I personally think gendered classes are bullshit but I do feel it is worth noting here), and I couldn't help but see direct parallels to Calders conversation with Arcjec and the scene in TADC Epsiode 6 where Pomni confronts Jax about his bullshit.
See y'all in 2026 I suppose. This comic means the fucking world to me and I'm so incredibly excited for its return.
