I really wish I could get behind the idea that the current transandrophobic discourse will go the way of ace and bi discourse, but TRFs are making names for themselves in actual transfeminist theory. Respected trans journalists are spreading anti-transmasc talking points. I don't think this is simply going to fade away as part of the cycle of discourse.

I hate feeling like I'm a doomer about this, but the bi and ace discourse felt way more like primarily online queer discourse to me while I see transandrophobic sentiments and continued transmasc/nb erasure everywhere, not just on social media. I don't want to discount the prevalence of bi- and ace- phobia and erasure (I am bi and ace), but, by and large, anti-transmasculinity feels way more baked into feminism, and our erasure when we are explicitly relevant more normalized in society.

This isn't just Tumblr discourse, and I've seen more people recognizing it and pushing back on it (in proportion to how much I've seen anti-transmasculinity) here than I have anywhere else so far.

Everything I've talked about is still all technically online, since I haven't been able to get out to queer spaces irl, but I'm not just talking about medium article journalists or academics (not that they're inherently lesser). I think this is a more widespread problem than some people on here seem to think it is.

I run a queer social group that works with other queer orgs, and I have encountered a lot of places that will openly say that they don't want to work with a group that has a trans man but doesn't have a corresponding trans woman in a lead role, because trans men need to be supervised in order to not become toxic (always said in a tone of "Obviously there's nothing wrong with YOU personally, but it looks bad"). Likewise, there seems to be a real suspicion of all-trans-men or all-transmasc groups, in a way that there isn't of all-trans-women or all-transfem ones (whether that's a deliberate "We are an all-transmasc group" or just "Only three people turned up to our all-trans-social and they were three men")

And again, I'm talking about work within explicitly queer spaces, outside of them none of this applies and we're all treated effectively the same.

But yeah, it does seem to be a pattern that is passing into the real world, and crucially is being picked up by cis people in a way that is incredibly cruel and basically gives them license to act out their disgust towards trans men with impunity because it appears to have the blessing of trans women.

actually pheromone sensing works differently from normal olfaction, since humans in our world don’t have a functioning vomeronasal organ (VNO), we don’t have any data on how covid-19 would affect a functioning VNO in omegaverse AUs

Actually there is evidence that covid probably would affect the VNO and it stands to reason would accordingly impair its function. Briefly:

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid, can only infect cells expressing a certain protein called ACE2

ACE2 is expressed widely in nasal cavity epithelial cells but not in olfactory sensory neurons.

Seo et al. (2021) studied potential nasal targets for SARS-CoV-2 using golden hamsters as a model organism (commonly used as a proxy for humans in virology studies)

They found ACE2 expression in the main olfactory bulb epithelium (MOE, your “normal” nose organ) as well as the vomeronasal organ (VNO)

Several cell types in the VNO were able to be infected and they also found significant inflammatory activity (macrophage activation, apoptotic cells, etc)

The specifics of how covid actually causes dysosmia are not known for sure but epithelial damage by local inflammatory immune responses likely plays a role, especially because sensory neurons themselves are not affected (Bilinska, & Butowt, 2020). Therefore I would suggest a potential similar effect of VNO dysfunction as we see in the main olfactory bulb

From Seo et al.: “Considering the function of the VNO, infection and subsequent pathologic changes may affect the behavior of Syrian hamsters”

If it stands to reason that omegaverse individuals have functioning VNOs similar to members of the animal kingdom, then it is more than reasonable to conclude that covid may cause them to lose not only their main olfactory function, but also their VNO function as well
