That makes sense! It is daunting! But, in my opinion, you don’t need to learn everything first before you start doing anything. I know I certainly don’t know everything, but I still identify as a Gaelic Polytheist. 

I think what helps, though, is having a direction. Something as simple as, “I want to connect to THIS deity”, is a good start in my opinion. The learning will come from that. The experience will come from that. The actions will come from that. So know where you want to go, and let that inform what you do now. 

And, again, you can totally be a Gaelic Polytheist without knowing everything. Most people start knowing nothing at all or nearly nothing, and that’s okay.

What is the protocol for interacting with the dé ocus andé? Is there stuff you’re supposed to do? Stuff you definitely shouldn’t? How does a typical ritual go down, and what is the meaning behind the various practices therein?

What are the core tenets of the religion?

What are the sacred texts and other sources these are built on? You definitely don’t have to read a translation of every single medieval Irish text before you start–in some cases translations don’t even exist!–but it’s a good idea to have a rough outline of the mythology and folk beliefs and the context in which they were recorded. And a rough idea of the history of modern Paganism and GaelPol’s place in it, for that matter.

What sources have you been getting your info from? Do they seem trustworthy? Are they inclusive? Do they cite sources that seem academically sound? Are you reasonably confident they represent a broad sample of the GaelPol community?

Like, maybe all this seems like basic, common sense stuff, and maybe to some people it is. But I have interacted with people who did jump in completely blind into this polytheism stuff only to find it was something they didn’t want and/or weren’t prepared for, or pissed entities off by breaking ritual requirements they never knew were there.  So…yeah. There may not be a formalized conversion process, but that doesn’t mean it’s totally safe to start messing around with absolutely no background at all.

So I am going to be hosting a series of community skill nights, once a month. The idea is that various people will ask as hosts, each for a given night, to run nights related to their skills. It’s a way for polytheists to sharpen our skills, be they related to our praxis or not. But I need some information before I set this up. Hi there!  Thanks for stopping by!  I’d be more than happy to talk about mead making, both as a practical form of home brewing and a means of religious crafting!  Mead making can be as simple or as a complicated as you want to make it.  Really, the basics are to find a jug (like a glass carboy), toss some honey, water and yeast into it, aerate the crap outta it and slap an airlock on top (it can be even simpler than that but this is the general basics of modern home brewing) and let time do its thing.  I got a good simple starter’s guide for making a gallon of mead here at Storm the Castle.  If you want fast, cheap and easy, then there is a recipe and procedure for that too which you can find here.  

I’ve found some other good resources to be “Make Mead like a Viking” by Jereme Zimmerman if you want to do a more natural, less modern form of mead making (it always is a fun read) and the “holy Bible” of modern mead making techniques, “The Complete Meadmaker” by Ken Schramm.  

There are plenty of free resources out there to get you started like GotMead.com.  You can find a lot of information and recipes on that forum and site - I highly recommend it! 

This is a series to help people interested in hyrulian pop culture paganism get started! So without further ado, onward!

The Basics:

What is Mudora? What is hyrulian pc?

These are basically interchangeable terms to describe the same thing: pop culture paganism and witchcraft that is based on and takes inspiration from the Legend of Zelda series! The term Mudora comes specifically from an important key item in A Link to the Past called the Book of Mudora. It was an ancient book of Hylian lore that Link needed to decipher the ancient Hylian language.

Hyrulian Pc came first in the tumnlr community though, and is based on the term Hyrulians, which is used to describe all the peoples of Hyrule collectively!

Cool! But what about deities?

Congratulations! You have options! Obviously the most well known deities of the series are the Golden Goddesses (the GG), Din, Nayru, and Farore. They’re considered the main deities of the series and are the main part of the creation myth of the land and of course the Triforce.

Other Deities in the Series, including minor/local deities:

Hylia, the White Goddess, tasked with protecting the Triforce and Hyrule after the Golden Goddesses left.

The Great Fairies and the Queen of the Fairies

The Windfish, whose dreams created the island of Koholint

Lord Jabu-Jabu/Jabun, the guardian of the Zora

The Goddess of the Sand, of the Gerudo Desert. Little is known about her.

You could also work with the series villains! Exercise caution, these guys are pretty notorious for betraying their allies. A few you can consider:

Demise, the Demon King. Started this mess. Cursed the Goddess’s Chosen Hero and the Goddess’s Mortal Incarnation to an eternal cycle of rebirth with his own soul to make them suffer. Sealed by the Goddess Hylia and the Hero. 0/10 Would not recommend, hates all creatures of Light.

Ganon/Ganondorf. Main bad guy of the series. Reincarnation of Demise. Also called the Demon King, Demon Thief, and Dark Beast. Has a beast form in some, but not all games he appears in. Wants to rule Hyrule with an iron fist.

Ghirahim, the Sword Spirit. Calls himself Demon Lord, he is a servant of Demise and the spirit of Demise’s evil sword. Has excellent personal style and a penchant for flare and drama. Very bad temper, he is often single minded in his fury.

The Wind Mage Vaati. A Minish apprenticed to the Sorceror Ezlo. Attempts to steal the Light Force and achieve god-like power, he betrayed his master to steal the magic cap that provides his powers.

Majora, Demonic Entity of Termina. Not much is known about Majora aside from it being a powerful evil spirit. It’s said that a tribe once existed that worshipped it and would invoke it’s powers through a heart-shaped mask. In the manga, it is depicted as a dragon, where it was killed by the Fierce Deity after it attempted to destroy Termina in the past, and was sealed into a mask made of the dead dragon’s hide. It attempts to bring down the moon during the Carnival of Time.

Zant, the Usurper King. A Twili in line for the throne of the Twilight Realm. His greed, ambition and weak magic made the rest of the Twili distrust him and he was passed over. Ganondorf, banished to the Twilight Realm, provided him with more magic, which Zant in turn used to assault the Palace of Twilight and usurp the throne from Midna. Proceeds to take over both the Twilight Realm and the Light World, using cursed Twili as his soldiers.

The Witches Twinrova. Gerudo witches who are sisters, they wield the power of fire and ice. Can combine into one entity for more power. Raised Ganondorf as their son, and make several attempts to resurrect him, including causing the events in Labrynna and Holodrum. They bicker, a lot.

Neat! But what if I don’t want to work with anyone?

Good question! Some people just don’t vibe with entities and that’s okay! You have a couple options here too!

The Triforce. The remnants of the Golden Goddesses power after they created, and then left, Hyrule. Said to grant any wish to one who has a balance of the Goddesses Virtues in their hearts. Splits into three if your heart is unbalanced, but even a single piece can provide immense power.

The Light Force. Theorized as being the living energy in all things created by the GG, it was likely created by the Goddess Farore when she poured her soul upon the land. Probably the easiest divine energy to reach as its basically the energy of everything.

The Elements of the Sages. You don’t have to work with the Sages to work with their elements. Light, Forest, Fire, Water, Shadow, Spirit, Earth and Wind appear everywhere.

The Goddess Flames, three sacred fires created by Hylia using remnants of the GG’s magic. Used by the Hero to temper the Goddess Sword into the Blade of Evil’s Bane, the flames are eternally burning and can be a useful source of magic to draw from.

Music. Music is pretty integral to the series, with instruments being main plot items (such as the Ocarina of Time or the Goddess Harp) or useful key items for accessing dungeons and secrets.

Wow! That’s so much to choose from! But how do I get started?

Another excellent question mysterious reader! There’s a number of ways to get started. You could make a small ritual to get their attention, and ask them about working with them, or go super simple and just make a small offering and asking for someone to speak to you. It’s all up to you! In the next post, I’ll give some examples of short rituals to try out based on the elements or other details associated with the various beings!

I sure hope so, otherwise I’ve been practicing wrong for quite a while now…

When I first started throwing Set and Osiris into a shrine box together, people honestly sorta kinda freaked out over it. I remember telling a worker at a “pagan-y” shop that I worked with both and her face contorted in about 5 different directions. I honestly don’t entirely get why people assume Set and Osiris can’t work together or tolerate each other’s company for a period of time, etc. To me, allowing them to reside in the same place allows them to move beyond mythic time, to work towards reconciliation, and to grow into the modern era with the rest of the pantheon.

Depending on how we look at the myths, stories, and symbolism from AE, you could paint several different pictures as to whether Set and Osiris have managed to reconcile – whether then or after AE fell.

For instance, if we remember that Osiris is Horus and Horus is Osiris (because they’re all the King in a very remote/removed sort of way, just on different sides of death for any given king) we could argue that Bawy (the merged, reconciled form of Horus and Set) is proof that Set and O are on good terms. You could argue that because early dynastic kings were shown trying to emulate and embody both aspects of Horus and Set, that it would stand to reason that trying to embody both Osiris and Set would kinda do the same thing. Same way that you’ve got Roberts’ idea that Ptah embodies both Set and Osiris in one being – you’ve got to reconcile the two in order to embody both.

There’s also the layer of what Osiris seems to stand for, what he embodies in his character, especially when you add in the later period elements of equating him to the earth. He sustains us. We make our living off of his back. Even though we often treat the earth as something to be domineered, something to abuse and use however we want, it still provides (this is obvs within reason, there are exceptions *cough*climatechange*cough*.) To me, Osiris is much the same way in that his patience is eternal, and his ability to forgive and move on is also eternal. It’s partially, imo, what he gained through his transition. 

And if we’re talking about my UPG, I believe that his ability to move fully into the Duat and take the crown again as an overseer of the Duat can’t happen unless he can move past the traumas that he sustained in his previous form of existence. Based off of my own experiencing, I would say that the whole point of traveling through the Duat is specifically to heal from your human lifetime, to find a way to let go of any anger or hurt or despair that you had in your human life, so that you can begin all fresh and squeaky clean in the afterlife. It’s also why I don’t think many people get rejected from the Hall, because you’re supposed to work through that shit before you show up… and provided you did your due diligence, there is technically nothing to fear.

Anyways, TL;DR: yes, you can worship both. You can even place both into the same tiny shrine space and the world won’t end. Yes, I think there are still issues that need to be ironed out between them, but ultimately, I don’t think there is as much hostility or anger or hurt btwn them as there used to be. If I had to pick the one who is more awkward about it all, it’s Set not Osiris.
