a lot of people assume psychosis hallucinations are super intense all-consuming horror movie shit like the memes about the hat man or always horrible debilitating things that make you dangerous to be around
but in my experience 95% of my hallucinations are getting spooked by very clearly hearing someone knocking on my door or calling my name from another room or hearing footsteps walking behind me which are "just" my brain recreating the horror of an abusive childhood
i *have* gotten the "bugs crawling all over me" hallucination once or twice though and yeah that one is exactly as terrible horrible as it sounds AUGH

media and pop culture hypes up psychosis a lot as The Worst That Can Happen out of sanism, so even when you try and filter that cultural bias out you still assume it's based on something
when, no, psychosis is actually very simple: it's just hyperactive pattern matching. it's your brain's signal-to-noise ratio being off balance, it's seeing images in random static. it's not always this special uniquely big thing, it's in fact quite mundane a lot of the time.
no one is immune to psychosis, it's not purely the realm of the insane. anyone is one bad night of sleep or one bad case of food poisoning or one bad fever away from being just like me on my worst days.
and this, indeed, is why solidarity with the insane is so important: you, yes you too, are just one bad day from joining us, and no perceptions of being a "temporarily embarrassed sane person" will save you from the oppression of the psychiatric institution.

To put this in perspective, the last time an American subgroup migrated at these rates was the Great Migration, in which roughly 6 million Southern Black people fled Jim Crow violence and repression. This occurred over a period of decades, in the face of political repression, systematic violence, and legal apartheid.
In its fastest decade, the 1940s, 1.5 million left the South—against a Southern Black population of roughly 10 million. Black America fled Jim Crow at about 1.5% a year, at a time when baseline inter-state mobility was higher than it was today.
Trans America is fleeing red-state persecution at ten to twenty times that. In short, trans people are being internally displaced within America's shores.

Following up on that post about slavery in Ancient Rome, if you’re ever wondering why, for instance, Rome kept launching wars in Parthia and Germanía, there are multiple reasons, especially pride once the people of both regions had defeated them, but more than anything it was access to more slaves. The soldiers and civilians captured in these wars were the primary source of slaves other than those born into slavery. The entire project of the Roman Empire only truly makes sense when you comprehend the degree to which it was economically reliant of mass slave labor, particularly in its mines, on its farms, and in its mills and bakeries. The grain dole, the famous Roman welfare program which guaranteed grain for its poorest (free) people was in large part propped up by slave labor
Child sex slavery was also rampant. Part of the Roman obsession with always being the penetrating, masculine man in sex between two men led to a bias towards younger boys, and that’s on top of the already massive trade of enslaved girls forced into sex slavery. I remember reading a collection of Saturnalia epigrams (hypothetical tags you could put on holiday gifts to friends) by the Roman poet Martial that casually mentioned gifting someone a young sex slave from Cadiz. And that’s just off the top of my head. It was everywhere, and it was seen as completely normal

So I talked to prev about this a bunch in dms cause this prompted me to go a bit more in depth in my comparison, so I’m going to add some of what we talked about to this post.
None of this is to absolve the northern US during slavery, but you cannot really consider the proportion of enslaved people in the US without focusing on the South specifically because there were very few enslaved people in the North during the peak of slavery and it was generally more populous, so it heavily skews statistics. At the peak of slavery, 40% of all people in the US South were enslaved. In Mississippi, a state with an even more entrenched slave economy than somewhere like Virginia, the figure is closer to 55%.
This led me to talking about Haiti, where, before the revolution, about 90% of the population was enslaved, and that figure would be even higher if not for the fact that about half of all enslaved Africans kidnapped to Haiti died of yellow fever within their first year there.
So much of human history has been founded upon inconceivable amounts of enslaved bodies, and it’s still happening today. The US largely outsources its slavery to the imperial periphery, so it’s difficult to make direct comparisons of enslaved vs free inhabitants, though enslaved prisoners still account for about 1 in every 200 people in the US. For an example of a state where slavery is more prevalent domestically, 60% of the UAE’s population are South Asian immigrants, but they comprise 95% of the workforce and most of them work in conditions that are effectively slavery.

Y’all know that I’m into ancient Roman history and I do a lot of research on it but even though I should be used to it by now sometimes I read an anecdote about how an individual slave was treated and I’m hit with the realization that like a third of the population was living like that and I just need to put my head in my hands for a second
Emperor Hadrian randomly stabbed a slave in the eye in a fit of rage and he was supposedly unusually sympathetic to slaves.
There’s other instances of people randomly punching slaves that they didn’t even know because they got in their way or something. This was just normal behavior.
And slaves didn’t rebel en masse because if even one slave committed an act of violent rebellion it was common practice to kill every slave and former slave in the household.
People only took notice for posterity when these mass executions got into the hundreds of people. One of the few recorded for the history books is of over 400 people being killed because one guy stabbed his enslaver.
Like how many people throughout history were beaten to death because some rich asshole was angry and there was no legal or social consequences for doing so? We don’t know.
When you study ancient history you’re reminded that slavery has never once been kind or justified. It just takes on different forms of evil in every time and place that it infects.
Chattel slavery is an incredibly cruel and dehumanizing system.
So is every other kind of slavery.
This doesn’t diminish the awfulness of what people were forced to endure under chattel slavery.
I just think it’s useful to remember that cruelty is complicated and diverse and just because a cruel system is different doesn’t make it right by any means.
Roman slavery operated differently from slavery in the antebellum American south which operated differently from slavery in the Ottoman Empire which operated differently from modern prisoner chain gangs.
All of these are still slavery. They’re all cruel and unacceptable. Their diversity does not matter. Their willing participants have still committed the crime of taking away the self ownership and personhood of another human being.
roman slavery was a system of chattel slavery. "Chattel" is a word for portable property; my mobile phone is a chattel. Chattel slavery is any system in which slaves are treated as personal property that can be sold on like any other piece of property. There are other forms of slavery, where slaves are owned by the state, or debt bondage.
Anyway, one of the effects of chattel slavery is that like any commodity the price of slaves fluctuates with supply and demand. When rome made new conquests this would flood the market, sometimes to the point where it was cheaper to work one's slaves to death over a few months than feed them properly -- the cost of replacing the slaves became cheaper than (say) a year's worth of basic food. This appears to have been the background for the three servile wars -- the slave rebellions on sicily and most famously the one led by spartacus on the italian mainland.
