āyou couldnāt adapt odysseus the way he is in the poem (ruthless, relentless, arrogant, unfaithful, cunning, vindictive, unbothered by the consequences of his schemes) bc itās wayyy too alienating to modern sensibilitiesā is an interesting statement i keep seeing repeated. when like one of the most universally beloved characters from an incredibly acclaimed story recently has been saul goodman
Is this guy bothering you? cuz I could bother you too but in a different better way
Iām glad reading American Prometheus seems to have irreversibly changed Christopher Nolanās brain chemistry but Odysseus isnāt actually Oppenheimer heās Truman saying he doesnāt want that crybaby scientist back in his office
okay I actually just wanted to draw the cabbage scene from the mad king for longevity but as of Saturday nightā¦.. it got funnier???

the jaime vs barristan selmy scene is still frying me like weāve had two years of this asoiaftwt ābarristan has a better redemption arc than jaimeā agenda posting only for this play to fucking destroy that old man and champion jaime in the same fucking scene šš
āPOV trapā is a frequent feature in bad faith readings of jaime where ppl use the concept of an āunreliable narratorā to suggest things that are never even suggested in the text might nonetheless be true because they think they ought to be. and this is frequently used to suggest Jaime may have ultimately killed Aerys purely for his own sake and his fatherās, and never had any moral or altruistic motive.
the reason I am now going to be shoving TMK in ur face forever is that 1) itās a GRRM-approved script that goes out of its way to show Jaime did it for the right reasons and was in fact the only (male) moral actor in the fucking red keep throughout the Rebellion and 2) the POV trap does not apply here. it cannot apply. we are no more in Jaimeās head than we are anyone elseās in any given scene, and so if the playwright needed to indicate that Jaime killed Aerys for Tywin, or for his own skin, he wouldāve had to find SOME way of externalising that thought process.
except he doesnāt. Jaime tells Aerys himself there are 500k ppl in the city when Aerys reveals his wildfire plot, and he personally tells Aerys not to let Tywin into the city, bc he knows Tywin would sack it. Jaime actually stands to benefit from Tywin entering KL! but his advice in both the books and the play is not to fucking let him in lol. we also have jaime being physically threatened multiple times by the KG for even voicing dissent, so if they wanted to indicate Jaimeās supposed self-interest then having him repeatedly put his life on the line just to SAY something is. not a great way to do that
so readings that argue jaime did what he did for selfish reasons are basically just illegitimate and unfounded, and we are gonna keep telling you so. you have no evidence in the books, and the one adaptation that shouldāve helped you make ur point has actually strenuously made the opposite. and sorry if that ruins ur mental image of the character but for MY part I have been absolutely exhausted by the contrarian readings that have proliferated for YEARS and I am quite happy to have something to shove in ur faces now since the books were apparently not enough š¤šš¤

Was Cat present anywhere else beside the wedding the hymn scene you mentioned and the last one with Ned and Jon?
And Is there anything that hasn't been mentioned about her in the play that you found interesting
Those are the three scenes I remember her being in - before they actually started singing the hymn there was a scene with her and Benjen I believe where sheās pregnant with Robb and talking about worrying about Ned and she says sheās going to name the child after the man who took so many husbands away - Robert (Cat Nedbert Fujo?)
Then the hymn scene starts and she stays on stage while the war is on
I already mentioned that she took charge in the Ned/Cat scene which I liked⦠she was a minor character; more couldāve been done w the fact that her mother was a Whent so she has a connection to Harrenhal but there was A Lot Going On
Reconstructing Beauty and the Beast
āMartin said what he wanted to do was to take the traditional format of Beauty and the Beast and change the roles ā and also the gendersā
oomf spotted
Thanks for answering questions. Many people who saw the play are saying that Robert Baratheon is portrayed sympathetically in the first act and Lyanna sort of likes him but isn't attracted to him. How does his character come across in the second act? Is he angry and jealous? Does he have an obsession with Lyanna which motivates him to kill Rhaegar?
So the thing about Robert.
Play Robert had some kind of sympathy towards Rhaegar initially - he had a good conversation with Rhaegar about how theyāre both mourning and dealing with grief. He is hesitant to say anything negative towards Aerys bc of the treason aspect but after Aerys mocks the death of his parents by giving him a replica of their ship torn apart by the storm that killed them when he wins the melee he storms off and itās implied heās more amenable to the coup. Itās clear he and Lysnna are a poor fit for each other but she has some affection for him especially when she sees him visibly upset abt the loss of his parents and is able to comfort him but sheās basically already in love w Rhaegar at this point and dreading her fate of being married to Robert.
In act 2 heās definitely driven by anger but itās not just about Lyanna - act 2 opens on the murder of Brandon and Rickard which as someone who cares deeply for Ned upsets Robert as well; while Robert has beef w Rhaegar specifically over what he thinks is āstealing / abductingā Lyanna heās also endured multiple humiliations at the hands of the Targaryens at this point and is ready to go sicko mode. I wouldnāt say he has an āobsessionā w Lyanna but Robert in the books and this is echoed in the play has always thought of Lyanna as someone / something he Deserved and not necessarily a person with equal agency to himself. I believe in AGOT Ned comments in his mind abt how Robert cares for the idealized version of Lyanna he had in his head and not the real life woman Ned knew. Thatās the feeling one gets from the play as well. Heās lost so much already and this is just one more insult, just one more loss

Yeah he brought her fruits and heās wearing this dumbass sleeveless tank top with no shoes and his kings guard is just fucking around
Do you remember the order of the curtain call, or specifically who took the last bows?
It wasnāt a super organized curtain call everyone came out at once - but this was the first showing / still in preview so itās entirely possible things might change from August 8th onward. Actually the director came out right before the show started and said this is the first time the play had been run on the stage in full soooo some staging aspects like that are probably subject to change!
