One of the things we’ve learned is to ask “how do you feel about xyx?” Instead of “is it ok if xyz?” This was never a thing we had issues with (until it was) until we were in a situation where he was asking for a lot of things and it felt like I couldn’t really say no (i.e. My girlfriend had a bad day and wants to come over and I know it’s the 5th day this week but is that ok). The change in phrasing makes it easier to answer with “it sucks that she had a bad day. Will you put aside sometime for me tomorrow because I’m feeling left out?” It was helpful for me to not have to be the bad guy and say no - especially in the beginning when there was all the NRE.
