Athena in Peacetime💙
Not entirely happy with it, especially the wobbliness of some of the lines, but it's probably finished to the best of my ability right now, and it's close enough to what I was picturing that I'm pleased! 😊

The Caryatids, Erechtheion, Acropolis, Athens.
Bronze plaque of Athena
Athens, Greece, ca. 530 BCE
Acropolis Museum, Athens
Bronze, gold-plated, double-sided sheet that depicts Athena. It was found near the north walls, right opposite the northern entrance to the Erechtheion. The goddess is dressed in a chiton, himation and aegis and walks to the viewer’s right.
Two identical sheets that outline with precision the goddess’ figure fit together so that Athena is represented on both sides. This technique is exceptionally rare with only very few surviving examples. It has been suggested that the goddess may have decorated the rim of a large vessel.

I've been reading Emily Wilson's translation of The Iliad and I'm about to make it everyone's problem.
Not enough people appreciate that Athena pulls Achilles hair to stop him from attacking Agamemnon. I'd like to think, had they been invented, she would have used a spray bottle.
Also, I know that my illustration of the Athena and Achilles scene is more generically classically inspired, and the Aphrodite and Helen illustration uses Bronze Age aesthetics. They're not meant to exist sequentially, I'm just vibin'.
The ancient world was full of textile masterpieces we can only imagine… but most of them have rotted away. So few of them have come down to us in these days that we think of metal and stone as the primary mediums for the oldest artworks. But there were tapestries and fabric work that would have rivaled the finest wrought gold and iron and the first cave paintings.

“Athena blessed her with intelligence, great artistry and skill, a finer mind than anyone has ever had before, even the braided girls of ancient Greece, Tyro, Alcmene, garlanded Mycene– none of them had Penelope’s understanding.”
