instead of killing them with kindness, sometimes it's better to just kill them with absurdism.
i was in the mall bathroom shopping with friends the other day and this lady cornered me doing the whole transphobic "you're in the wrong bathroom" routine. my heart was pounding and i was gearing up for the usual rebuke when my friend walks out of her stall.
for context: my friend is the most high-femme, legally-blonde, pastel-wearing girl alive. perfect blowout, perfect acrylics, always smells like vanilla
she walks over to the sinks and just sweetly asks "everything okay?" the lady points at me and huffs, "this man shouldn't be in here"
my friend doesn't even blink. she just shakes the water off her hands, looks the lady dead in the eye, and says in her sweetest customer service voice, "oh, she's a girl. i'm a man, though. do you want me to leave too?"
the lady literally short-circuited. you could see her brain desperately trying to process the words she just said. she just stared, stuttered out something completely incomprehensible, grabbed her purse and practically fled out the door.
when the adrenaline crashed in the hallway i asked my friend why the hell she said that. she just said "honestly, she was already making up her own reality, figured i'd just completely scramble her worldview" like it was nothing and that's why I would protect her with my LIFE
