Contemporary art haters will be like "i don't get it" and then not read the title or artist statement or the medium or the year or
How to "get it":
Ask yourself, how does this piece make you feel? (No wrong answers)
Look for an artist statement nearby. What does it say about the artist and their relationship to their work? What does the artist say that they are trying to convey with their art? What contextual clues can you pick up from what they say about their background, or what they omit?
Look at the title of the piece. What is the artist saying about their work by naming it that, either explicitly or implicitly?
Look at the medium. Is there anything about the piece that stands out to you, knowing what it's made of?
Look at the year it was made. What cultural events might have been happening around this time? Was this piece part of a particular art movement? What was the purpose of that art movement, and what was it trying to say?
Accept that sometimes, you still might not get it. This is perfectly okay.
like idk i think at this point im just gonna have to start blocking anyone who's into taylor swift. sorry but if you can't drop her even after she invites ICE agents to her fucking wedding i just don't really think i want you near me. why are you throwing all of your supposed values away for a mid at best pop singer?
*guy who runs a ICE concentration camp, not an ICE agent. my bad. point still stands.

He is the executive chair of Amentum, a company that provides engineering and technology to the USAβs army and nuclear programs. They operate the most test and training ranges of any contractor if their site is to be believed.
It appears they run the East Montana concentration camp, the largest in the USA. While much of the abuse, including sexual and physical abuse, occurred under the campβs previous contractor, Acquisition Logistics, the ACLU has confirmed Amentum was WORKING AS SUBCONTRACTORS at the East Montana camp during this time. Amentum's current role as sole contractor from March onwards proves no less deadly, with 2 overdoses with the intent to commit suicide from inhumane conditions. Representative Escobar confirmed nothing has changed since Amentumβs takeover. Lawyers representing prisoners report being unable to reach their clients.
The following conditions are BY DESIGN, as "Guards tell people detained at Camp East Montana who complain about conditions that if they do not like the conditions, they should self-deport." Civil Detention Centers are not supposed to be punitive. This is only a civil detention center on paper. It is a concentration camp.
The ACLU lists: I already linked this but I'm doing it again bc if you read one source, it should be this one.
Medical neglect, including for people with pregnancies, diabetes, cancer, and HIV.
Severe beatings. One man was beaten to death for requesting his asthma medication.
solitary confinement
unclean water
Tuberculosis and Measles outbreaks
Limited to no sunlight
no or limited hygiene products
rotten food, not enough food, no special diets for medical conditions
SEXUAL ASSAULT
No ventilation in a DESERT leading to lung damage
Not enough toilets, overflow often, whole tent smells of urine and feces
No privacy to use said toilet
Threats and beatings for those that refuse to sign deportation papers, sometimes to places they are NOT FROM
No activities, punished for attempting to make art from recycled items like cracker boxes, can only practice own religion at guards' discretion
no dental care. This is likely universal across US concentration camps. Note Emmanuel Damas, the Haitian immigrant that died from a dental infection due to lack of care
Unable to receive legal representation if not already represented
LOCATED ON FORMER JAPANESE DETENTION CAMP BECAUSE TIME IS A FUCKING CIRCLE
Taylor Swift's guest is directly responsible for these. This is the LARGEST CONCENTRATION CAMP IN THE US, made to hold 5000 people. He's not just any ICE contractor he is the biggest and baddest. At least this will get people talking about just HOW bad this camp is.
Note this camp is in the Chihuahua Desert: This heat wave? Try it in a windowless fucking 108 by 36 ft tent with 72 other people with no soap.
i genuinely feel like im being edged
Banksy has confirmed that a new statue erected in London is his work and I think it might be one of my favourite pieces by him.
Called "Blinded by the Flag" it... actually, you don't need me to explain it, it's art, you'll get it and interpret it yourself.
It's in Waterloo Place, Central London, if you're nearby.
The first photo had me nodding, and then the full shot nearly killed me laughing. Perfection!
Banksy is a really interesting case of an artist being catastrophically overrated without being a complete hack. Like you start to think "oh God, him again" but then he puts up something Actually Good and it's kind of like getting slapped with a fish, but somehow in a positive way.

Two Utah court clerks have been dubbed "anti-ICE vigilantes" after they were allegedly caught "sneaking" immigrants out the back door of the
That's how you show real solidarity!
"After they overheard that ICE was at the courthouse to arrest someone, they improperly accessed court databases to determine who was not born in the United States," a DOJ detention filing says. "They then snuck every suspected illegal alien who was at the courthouse out a back door, where ICE, who was waiting in the parking lot for their target to leave the building, could not see them."
Think about what you can do at your job or in your daily life to resist fascism when the opportunity presents itself!

On this day, 5 July 1948, the UK National Health Service (NHS) was founded, on the principle that medical treatment should be provided according to need rather than the ability to pay. The idea for the NHS was not the result of individual enlightenment, but of working-class self-organisation. The inspiration for the NHS came from the Tredegar Workmenβs Medical Aid Society in South Wales, where coal miners and steelworkers paid in a small weekly subscription. By the start of World War II, 95% of Tredegar was covered by the society. Philip Prosser was born with club foot and received treatment as a result of his father's membership of the Society. He recounted: "I was taken to one of the top orthopaedic doctors in Wales and that was the start of my treatment for quite a few years. When the NHS came in in 1948, I was transferred over. It was exactly the same as the NHS in 1948. We already had it in Tredegar before that." During World War II, to motivate millions of people to sacrifice and dedicate themselves to the war effort, the government promised reforms to benefit working-class people after the war was over. Conservative MP Quentin Hogg had warned Parliament that "if you do not give the people social reform, they are going to give you social revolution." Sure enough, after the war ended, servicemen returning home, and others, began demanding better conditions, backing it up with direct action, like a huge wave of squatting. The NHS was part of a package of reforms introduced following the conflict to ensure social peace. But almost right away, it came under attack. Legislation to bring in prescription charges was introduced by the Labour Party in 1949. Then fees for dental treatments were introduced, and since then the free, socialised service has been under attack from successive governments who have gradually introduced more charges, marketisation and privatisation. Meanwhile, health workers, patients and local communities have continuously fought to defend it. Every single person I know who did football in high school, without exception, has a chronic injury. Many regret what it's done to their knees and back, even major organs like the brain.
There is no serious legislative push to ban high school football.
Also, like, if you want to talk about social pressure on minors to undertake activities that will result in regrettable, irreversible damage to their bodies:
No one, *ever*, tried to persuade me to transition.
My gym teacher tried to persuade me to try out for the football team almost every single day that I was in junior high.
#i firmly believe that the reason why concussions and brain damage in general#are not taken nearly as seriously as they should be#is because of football#if we take concussions and brain trauma seriously then we have to acknowledge the risks that children are undertaking at even#high school level football#but we can't do that#because the kids need to play football in high school so they can play football in college so they can join the NFL#This time I'm really gonna queue it.
Not a single one of my wife's fingers is completely straight. If you look at them closely -- which I have, many times, over the past 22 years -- you can see where they were broken, over and over, taped in place, and where she just kept fucking playing.
When I first met her, she used to joke about how her coach said, "I could get more than that out of a pig if I kicked it hard enough," and that was the nicest fucking thing he said. Two decades later, she's like, "Yeah, that man verbally and physically abused all of us for years."
There is at least one football game she played in high school that she simply doesn't remember, because she was a linebacker. She got a concussion. She got up and kept playing... or so she's told. She doesn't remember, because she had a fucking concussion and they let her keep playing.
I hate football so much. It ruined her back, her knees, fucked up her hands... everyone was so obsessed with how tall she was, how broad-shouldered. No one ever pushed her to transition, but I fucking wish someone had at least suggested it. That would have hurt her so much less than FUCKING FOOTBALL. Like, it would have been actually beneficial to her.
I heard that one of the actual reasons that organizations like the NFL have tried so hard to downplay CTE and other injuries like it is because theyβre terrified that moms will refuse to let their children play football anymore and that entire massive industry will come collapsing down because of it.
That fucking scans.
Yes to all of this.
Adding Cheerleading as another social pressured activity that causes a lot of harm, the 3rd highest concussion rate behind boys' football and wrestling... and it is only recognized as a sport is 30 USA states which is freaking important because being recognized as a sport significantly improves safety and decreases abuse. For example is limits the number of practice hours a high schooler can be required to practice.
My SIL has chronic back injury from cheerleading and had said for a long time she wouldn't let her kids do it. Her six year old has started classes.
I hate cheerleading.
Society pushes kids into meat grinders with football and cheerleading, ignores that and then piles the concern they should have for these sports onto something that is safe and beneficial. Bigotry isn't logical.
