Professional athlete doesn't know how to hold a puppy, full story at 8. Harris and Troy from 'Rolemodel' by Rachel Reid.
Sesame Street posting techniques for comforting children during traumatic world events feels so fucking dystopian but here are the slides they posted just in case you or a loved one has any little critters at home right now
No one is doing well right now, but being a little critter right now has got to be terrifying. This is such a crushing series of images, especially considering PBS’s funding got slashed. While I’m happy Sesame Street continues to keep the wellbeing and education of children as a major priority, there’s a certain amount of innocence that Sesame Street represents and this is giving me such a visceral feeling rn

I sure hope so, I need to get to 3rd and Broadway in fifteen minutes, step on it.
u used to be able to put a dvd in your computer. and then u could watch it
ring cameras have been police surveillance tools for the last decade idk why people are acting like it's new
You're seeing these posts for the same reason you're seeing more posts about leaving your phone at home and about masking and about grey block and about not talking to the cops:
A lot of people who haven't previously done activism are taking to the streets right now and people are offering them education that their own social bubble didn't expose them to before.
This happened in 2020 too. It happens every time there's a big spike in protests. And it's a good thing. It's great that more people are taking to the streets and it's great that these people are being given vital safety information without judgement about being new or not knowing everything yet.
these moments, when lots and lots of people en masse are realizing how horrible things are, are a great moment to help bring people into deeper understanding of the systemic issues at play. a great moment to connect people to the work that's been ongoing. if we want to build an actual movement, if we want to succeed in resisting and toppling these systems, that needs to be built on far more than just a self-righteous leftier-than-thou attitude. if people want to get in this fight, hell yeah. that's what we need to win.
The excellent podcast episode Everyone vs ICE: On the Ground In Minnesota has a great bit where they talk about the huge numbers of Republicans that have joined in the fight against ICE. And how they're being welcomed because "glad you're here gets so much further than what took you so long".
And because more people in the street saves lives. Kicking them out would mean caring more about your own moral high ground then about saving lives. So people welcome them.
Are all of them going to completely change their worldview? No. But they're here now, protecting their neighbors against ICE. That is real and material and it has the potential to become more. But it only becomes more if we're willing to help it grow.
25-35 is such a weird fucking age because you’re 100% a bread-and-butter Standard Edition Millennial but the cool teens are like “ok boomer” because you have a Real Job but the actual Boomers at your job are like “I’m not going to listen to a literal fucking child” as they download 16 self-replicating viruses and meanwhile the Gen Xers are telling you to refinance a mortgage for a house you don’t have and you’re sitting there at the Adults Table with the pretty tasty casserole you cooked because you’ve finally figured out how to do that now but everyone is eating the Boomer’s store-bought macaroni instead and admittedly they do sort of taste similar so it probably wasn’t worth all the trouble of cooking from scratch and you’re trying to comfort the freshly-graduated sobbing 22-year-old next to you because she just woke up here and doesn’t know where she is but you have like maybe 5k dollars in a savings account labelled RETIREMENT that grows approx. twelve cents a year and you keep eating dry macaroni while smiling incomprehensibly and periodically blacking out like ??????????
I knooooow the whole series is a political manifesto wrapped in an allegory but reading it as a story about individuals, katniss is so fucking funny bc she's like "idk if im actually into peeta :/ im so bad at acting like it" and then when she's at school for four years she watches peeta and every time she's frightened she holds onto peeta and whenever she's not sure what to do in a situation she just kisses peeta and whenever she can't articulate her thoughts she wishes for peeta bc she knows he would Get It and when she breaks down and can't perform it's bc the capitol is torturing peeta and when they rescue him from the capitol she goes "omg im gonna get to kiss peeta" and then as soon as she's not being forced to marry peeta she goes and does what? marries peeta. like girl okay.....

Yuna and David having watched their autistic son be so isolated all of his adult life and never having a happy relationship or close friends who understand his anxiety and then finding out that the man they’ve spent a decade hating on his behalf can casually talk him down from a panic attack in less than a minute
Yuna whispering ‘since rookie season’ and David adding ‘the summer before’ as they try to wrap their heads around the fact that Shane has been understood for YEARS in ways they never knew about.
I love that they got to see firsthand how well suited they are for each other emotionally, within an hour of finding out that this asshole womanizer they’ve felt nothing but disdain for takes care of their son in a way they’ve been terrified no one ever would. And it’s natural and it’s easy and it’s been going on for all this time
the sunk cost fallacy has been my favorite fallacy for as long as I can remember. so at this point it's probably too late to pick a different one
i think the reason "fiction affects reality" trips so many people up is because they think it means "engaging with media that depicts uncomfortable subjects will taint your soul" when really all it means is that "fiction is meant to reflect certain ideas of the world intentionally or not, and it's going affect your perception of it, if you don't go in with a healthy bit of skepticism"
like playing a first person shooter isn't going to turn you into a school shooter, but that doesn't mean that Call of Duty isn't like. explicitly military propaganda.
or (for a more specific but also weirdly common example) enjoying horror movies isn't going to turn you into a serial killer, but if you watch a lot of horror where the killer is "a gender confused man who kills women whilel dressed in drag, because his repressed female split personality hates his attraction to women because it gives her gender dysphoria" than you should like. be a bit criticial of what you're enjoying. or something like that.
But at the end of it, the point shouldn't be "certain kinds of stories should not be enjoyed by anyone bc they will warp you" and more like "please use your brain sometimes when watching/reading/playing things because every single story has messages in it about important ideas"
Even if sometimes the message is "the author/artist etc put zero thought into this idea bc it's something people make blind assumptions about"
I don't even think you Must Perform Criticism Of Thing Or It's Bad And You're Bad
Just like, have thoughts idk, be curious about what things mean, have that be something that matters to you sometimes
Does it fucking kill you too? Not anymore.

For the next two weeks, let's just be honest with each other... about what we actually think and... maybe how we really feel? I will try.
I am shocked at how many people don't have an actively hostile relationship with advertising
I am skipping your ads as fast as I can. I'm skipping past your sponsor read. I'm muting the tv. I'm muting the tab. If they get too annoying I will simply stop trying to watch.
If advertisers can use every manipulative trick in the book to get me to buy their product, I am fully within my rights to do everything I can on my end to make their job impossible
