You know for the first 18-ish years of your life everyone your age is mostly doing the same things and then all of a sudden every year for the rest of your life somebody your age is getting divorced while somebody else just learned what a leaf is and you have no idea what’s going on or what you’re supposed to be doing

That structure kinda gets the wrong expectations in your head. Like we should all be doing roughly the same things and reaching the same life milestones right? Nope. Apparently not. You can get your first divorce at 18 or 97 like literally what’s even happening what is a leaf do they still even make that car

“It’s not too late till you’re dead” is often about transitioning but it’s also not too late to get your first divorce. Never give up. 💪

Brb replacing "I should" with "I have the option/opportunity to" in my internal monologue re: beating myself up over shit that needs doing. Let's see if that works.

It actually really did help and I did the laundry and cat boxes. Guess I'll keep trying that one.

My psychiatrist told me this early on working with him. Every time I said "I should" he would be horrified and urge me to replace it with "I could." It took a lot of practice but my life is so much better for it because it replaces the pressure of external obligations with my own agency.

every time i'm caught on a "should" i try to reframe it as "if I want [a certain result], then doing [thing] can help me get there". It does double duty of taking the guilt out of the "should" while still reinforcing the motivation of WHY my brain pinged "should" in the first place. Or it even works to make me realize that i care less about the result than i think i'm """meant""" to and I can safely de-prioritize it

I think we need more radical acceptance that some people dislike us for reasons that make sense for their life experience. and we need to do this in a way that doesn't paint us as misunderstood victims because the fact of the matter is everyone is annoying to someone. you can't avoid that. and if someone is annoyed by you they aren't wrong about you being annoying and unlikable to them. the sooner we accept this the sooner we accept ourselves. we don't even like ourselves most of the time so why should we expect other people to uncritically enjoy every aspect of us regardless of our own internal struggle with our own extreme contrasts

so much of being an ok person is just 1) not panicking, 2) not taking things personally, and 3) not letting the vindictive gargoyle that lives in your head tell you what to do. this sucks because brains love doing those things

no such thing as wasting your 20s your 20s are for recovering from whatever the fuck happened to you as a kid so that youre ready to get weird with it in your 30s
