He feels Dean take a deep breath, grunting softly. Castiel tightens his hold on him but Dean still manages to turn himself over to face Castiel. His face is lax despite the small furrow between his brow, and he blinks slowly, sleepily. Castiel feels bad to have disturbed him. “You did?” Dean asks, voice gruff.

Castiel nods and presses a kiss to Dean’s forehead, noticing how it causes him to sigh and for his eyelids to flutter.

He thinks of sleeping in the back of the Gas ‘n’ Sip, of experiencing dreams for the first time, about how unsurprising but nonetheless jarring it was that nearly all of them centered around the man in his arms. How so many had him between Dean’s legs, or with Dean’s hands burning his naked skin; how so many were of quiet moments, of laying beside Dean or sitting on the hood of the Impala.

Some of them were so vivid that he woke up shaking. Sometimes his heart would hurt the whole day, longing for something undeniably missing, his body unsure how to move with the one he’d been orbiting no longer there.
