Itβs just a short blurb before the Dr. Lokken interaction in chapter 8 but I liked the implication of how much time they spent together probably like this- Β
as is the case with everyone their relationship is very thought provoking to me
My favorite completely inconsequential tmbd headcanon is that one of ART's hobbies is fashion design. Murderbot says in System Collapse that ART made it a custom environmental suit, and in Rapport it's straight up doing textile engineering. I think ART's crew uniforms are like, disproportionately chic and well-tailored for recycler-made clothing but Murderbot never notices because its only reference points for human clothes are media and the Preservation Alliance. Every member of ART's crew gets their uniform tailored to their measurements (obviously) but theyre also all subtly different depending on the crew's job responsibilities and personalities. (Tarik's is the standard recycler pattern. This isn't technically giving him substandard equipment, but everyone knows that's how ART means it) ART is so bored all the time and has so much processing power you know it's doing gnarly textile manufacturing bullshit. Spinning threads which vary ever so slightly in thickness so that when they're woven together certain areas are seamlessly reinforced. Blending stability and stretch according to the flexibility of its crew's joints as seen in their last medscan. Obviously all the superai transport uniforms are nicer than normal uniforms, but its known at the University that Perihelion's crew has the /best/ uniforms, and ART is very smug about this. It absolutely refuses to send along its garment manufacturing files if one of its crew moves to a new transport.
But like. On a more serious note. Garment manufacturing is one of the only public-facing responsibilities ART has where it can assert its personhood and competence. It's still a fine line to walk, but PortSec is much less likely to notice that Iris's crew jacket has circuitry patterns woven into it than they are to notice ART speaking in full sentences. This is the only part of it that gets sent into the outside world, that other people get to see. Of course it's going to pour all its protective frustration and affection and ego into making sure its people have clothing that flatters them, that keeps them safe and at the top of their game, that helps them do their jobs. What other hobby is a super transport going to have?
Shaking everybody who's still talking about Iris and ART's relationship like ART is the older sibling. The single most relevant-to-canon piece of information Rapport gave us is that Iris thinks ART is her younger sibling. You guys are focusing on the wrong stuff here I care about Murderbot too but IRIS THINKS THAT ART IS HER YOUNGER SIBLING. THIS ACTUALLY CHANGES A LOT OF THINGS WE ASSUMED ABOUT THEIR DYNAMIC. EVERYONE THINK ABOUT ART BEING POSITIONED AS THE YOUNGEST CHILD IN THE FAMILY DYNAMIC WITH ME.

Iris says in Rapport that ART never speaks impulsively or says anything it doesn't mean to, which... Doesn't super gel with what we've seen of it in the rest of the series. It seems like its more honest than it intends to be a few times in network effect at least. And part of that may be because it's just been through something very traumatic and may be acting in a way that would normally be out of character for it, but i also wonder if Iris may be assuming something is inherently part of its personality which is actually a side effect of her humanity.
Like, when it's talking to humans it has to wait to respond to them. Iris describes it as speaking in basically a normal human conversational pattern, which means it has to be delaying its responses .5 seconds or whatever. It would be really jarring for a human to have a conversation with someone whose reply appears instantly as soon as you hit enter. So regardless of how long it actually takes to formulate a response, it is in the habit of waiting before it speaks. And then it has to wait for the humans to read the message. And then it has to wait for them to respond. Human conversation must be an unbelievably slow process for ART.
And then there's Murderbot. Who isn't quite as fast as ART, but can still keep up with it in conversation at ARTs native, digital speeds. MB mentions being able to clock hundredth-of-a-second hesitations in ART's speech, which means it and ART must be talking INCREDIBLY fast. And I think it's entirely possible that some of Iris's perception of ART as levelheaded and icy in its rage comes from the fact it is essentially communicating with her via snail mail. It has SUCH a long time to think about what it says to her or the rest of the crew. In comparison, its conversations with Murderbot are suddenly happening in real-time. And so it says things that are a little bit crazy sometimes, because despite what Iris believes it isn't actually more levelheaded than a human, its just /faster./
Some people in this fandom have pointed out that if SecUnits are cheaper than human security they should be way more common, but if theyre more expensive than human security it doesn't make a ton of sense to have them. But i think the reason they're used where they are - on surveys and isolated installations - is because of how the economy of Hypercapitalism In Space works. If The Company had wanted to send a human security officer with PresAux they would have had to ship in extra food, a bigger habitat, etc to account for another person. Yes they could have charged PresAux for that, but they still have to pay for it. By comparison, sending a SecUnit (who i would assume is expensive to purchase but much MUCH cheaper than a human to maintain) lowers their overall costs for the survey while allowing them to charge the same amount for the "service" of security. But on a station where the infrastructure exists to provide food and housing already, its cheaper to pay a human security guard and then just charge them for the housing you already own than buy that many SecUnits. Its all about the cost benefit analysis of whether its cheaper to rely on existing infrastructure or invest in new infrastructure. SecUnits only make economic sense where you're building stuff from the ground up.
This is also, I think, why ComfortUnits make economic sense when human sex workers certainly exist. Unlike a human sex worker, a ComfortUnit does not need housing or food, does not wander around doing stuff when not being visited by clients, and can potentially work forever (as opposed to corporate sex workers who are much more prone to being murdered or having mental breakdowns or getting old and not being perceived as so attractive etc etc) On a station, sure, you can run your brothel with the limitless supply of young people trying to make a better life for themselves, but if you run tiny little mines in bumfuck nowhere its cheaper to just buy some comfortunits and let them run than it is to go through the work of feeding, accommodating, etc all these extra humans.
"crime" for conservatives is basically just existing in public as a person of color
always thinking about that Oxford study that found half of adults define "young people hanging around in groups" as "anti-social behaviour"
>"anti-social behaviour"
>looks inside
>socialising

the forgers get a cat (it has telekinesis)
it probably like, snuck into radioactive waste or something that project apple left behind and came out with telekinesis
not enough to do serious damage but just enough for tomfoolery and shenanigans
yor found the kitty. it immediately loved her. yor is its favorite
bond is terrified of this cat 1/8th his size
bond is sad when anya shows this cat love, but also can't do anything because aforementioned fear
it likes to mess with loid because why not? make his life harder. go kitty
doesnt have a name yet π€π€
this is vaguely going off a comment someone left about yor paying loid a compliment but this comic just kind of went in a totally different direction lol. it is very messy even by my standards tbh but we're gettin back into the swing of it... Slowly
