Except he is not actually gone, because the eridian equivalent of a carebear decided to save them. And he doesn't want anything in return, in fact he is well aware that he might die A PAINFUL SLOW DEATH, shortly after fighting just to get the love of your life back to you. But it's ok :) because Rocky (yes he gave them a silly name) is my best friend! Oh- Are you ok-

Was rereading Project Hail Mary and got to the Baikonur explosion scene. First time through I totally missed this.

It is never explicitly stated what caused Yao and Ilyukhina's deaths, in the book or the movie. There's speculation but nothing concrete (and Andy has been deliberately evasive when asked directly about how they died).

However, there's a significant implication here. The test crew found anomalies in the medical feeding transport system. Only in one pump, but still. That's the one they found. Might there have been others?

Grace then makes a note - on paper, he specifically says that they're working on paper right now - to include a spare slurry pump in the unclaimed launch space. Then, all hell breaks loose when the research centre blows up. What do you reckon that in the aftermath of all that, Grace might not remember to pass on that piece of paper with the info about including spare slurry pumps?
