I watched the first Enola Holmes movie and at first I was thinking "Well it's not as bad as the third movie! It was okay". And then I kept thinking about the movie... and what it did... and I realised that I did not think it was okay at all I really really hated it.
The only thing I really cared about in the movie was what the mothers whole deal was... and that plot line got dropped. Enola said "Sorry mom but I gotta help Tewkesbury!" And then the mission literally changed from. Finding her mom to helping the boy she likes. I DID NOT CARE ABOUT THE GUY. They had zero chemistry ok all of their interactions just felt so forced and awkward I hated it.
See, it's also that this movie wants to have a feminist message yet... look, women can love men. Of course they can. And the one thing that the society Enola lives in wants from her is that she marries a man. Literally the one thing expected of her.
And, see, this movie aims to be against this sexist society. Yet they make her fall in love with the random guy she happens to meet. Look feminism doesn't mean that women can't fall in love with men, but this isn't real life, this is a movie with an intentionally crafted narrative. This movie wants to have a feminist narrative. Yet the narrative is so not feminist at all.
Because it switches from focusing on a mother-daughter relationship to a girl-boy relationship. And it felt... jarring I suppose? To be fair the mother-daughter relationship wasn't the most interesting either. It makes me question if this movie actually cares about having a feminist message but that's beside the point right now...
See, I don't hate the fact that Enola meets someone who joins her journey. Having another runaway kid that she hangsout and banters with? That's cool, and probably needed for the story. It can be a boy as well, I don't mind. But I just hate that it's a romance. It feels like it's a romance simply because that's what's expected of a movie where girl meets boy! Ok, but. Why not. Challenge these expectations? Why can't they be friends. Because I also feel like their relationship is stunted by the fact that it's obviously going towards a romance. It just makes me think "Ok why even get invested in where their relationship goes if I already know they are going to have a romance". That's not just because I watched the third movie first, it's just obvious from the way this movie presents them.
Anyway... this is already longer than I wanted it to be I just wanted to write a quick rant,, I have more to say tho uhmm.
I hated the fact that the movie kinda forgot about the mom for a bit and then she just shows up at the end. Ok. Well cool to see her but like her plot line would have been so much more interesting than whatever the heck we got. And now she just shows up as an attempt to quickly tie up her plot line,,
The twist with Tewkesburys grandma was pretty weird. See, it's cus if they had just stuck with the uncle having been behind the plan it would have very easily given us a motive for why he's doing all of this. But with the grandma it's just... I guess she's patriotic and mysoginistic? But it's just weird because we know absolutely nothing about her. And the twist doesn't recontextualise any past scenes besides... the one scene the grandma had. But even then, it just doesn't do anything for the narrative. The twist feels like it's just there because they felt like they needed to add the twist. I think this could have been cool tho... If they had gone more in depth about her feelings.
I don't get the connection to Sherlock Holmes thing. To be fair, I don't know anything about Sherlock Holmes besides him being a detective. Does he have a younger sister or did the writers just think it'd be cool to make a movie about a hypothetical sister. I don't know, either way the Sherlock Holmes part of the movie did not feel needed. It could have just been a mystery movie, but it also didn't feel intrusive so it's whatever. He had an arc and it was fine. Tho, it confuses me when thinking about him in the third movie. Because in the first one he learns to basically show care towards his sister. But then in the third movie he's back to focusing solely on his work? I guess it's because it was an important case to him? It just felt odd to me.
Okay, tho, the third one felt very intrusive about the Sherlock Holmes. Everytime Enola tries to do detective work she thinks "What would Sherlock have done!". It makes it seem like she can't think for herself. Yes, I know, it's because he's missing and she's trying to figure out where he went. But it got soso annoying and it just made her look incompetent... in my opinion!
End of my media opinion. Uhmm I swear I also like things.
