Commission for donations in style of @toorumlk ! Yâall ever think about how show!alina wanted to travel the world and ended up stuck in ravka and show!mal wanted to stay & build a life w her and ended up exploring alone? đ
I do not recollect how the story concludesâwhether the young lady became in time reconciled to her fatherâs brilliant court, or whether she ran away and married a gnome; but this tale somehow reminded me of my own experiences, and I caught myself wondering whether a few years hence, perhaps, the summons to return to the world might not have come too late.

"we cut the nobody scene from the odyssey" "we cut the religious trauma and parental abuse from carrie" i'm starting to think that studios barely funding original films is starting to have an effect where directors make up a story and then slap an IP on it in order to sell. or maybe some bitches just can't read anymore idk it's one or the other
everyone in the tags adding the fennell wuthering heights is correct btw
man yâall remember when the avengers movie came out and everyone headcanoned that all the avengers would live together in the tower and had all these cute posts about various fun ways they could interact and then the movies literally never had any of them even be friends
I want to state, for the record, that âall the avengers would live together in the towerâ wasnât collective headcanon, it was canon. The very last scene of Avengers (2012), the one they left us on, is Tony redesigning the tower, designing a living area for each Avenger. That was, canonically, what was supposed to happen, in canon, and they just changed their minds and decided to⊠not. For whatever goldarn reason.

idk but when i discover new books and music iâm just excited to be alive again. yes a bit dramatic but thatâs how i feel when i discover them
Le Guin tells the tragedy before it happens. When people are being smuggled through no-man's land she tells you that there was a bad link in the connection and soon the group gets caught. When she introduces a baby, she tells you it is sickly and will die, soon the baby dies. There is something masterful about not needing your tragedies to be shocking for them to be impactful.
Similarly she let's you know the coming victory, characters speak in the past tense when going through impossible odds, letting you know that they have persevered and came through. Yet it is still satisfying to see them do it.
All the while she wasn't even writing about chracters, she was just fantasising about different society structures and the chracters were her way of telling it.
Gruvia kiss?
I literally think this is canon

imagine you are a sheep. Imagine you are the smartest sheep in the entire world and yet your understanding of the world is so small. Imagine you are the wisest sheep in the flock and you carry the memory of everyone who came before so everyone else can be happy. Imagine being a winter lamb and dying for your flock. Imagine you are a good shepherd so loved by his flock that your sheep would do anything, even defy who they are, in order to avenge you.
and then imagine you are a brett goldstein ram and you finally have a reason for bashing. Bet that felt so good.
this is why no one likes you
Dashiell Hammett, who basically invented the noir genre (think: The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man) hung out enough in the queer scene in San Francisco in the 20s-30s that he picked up some contemporary queer lingo that he folded into his stories. In The Maltese Falcon, thereâs a scene where the wildly gay-coded villain shows up at a meeting with a skinny little blonde with a bad attitude and a gun in tow, and detective Sam Spade tells him to âleave the gunsel outsideâ â gunsel being contemporary gay slang for a young, effeminate man who probably bottoms (from the Yiddish gansl, meaning gosling). Basically, heâs saying âIâm here to talk to you, not your twink.â
However, a lot of writers mimicking Hammett did not know gay lingo or Yiddish, saw the word âgun,â and assumed âgunselâ meant âscary bodyguard with a gun.â They took off with a word they didnât understand and spread it so fast that itâs now basically impossible to read a noir story written between 1930-1960 without someone accidentally being called a twink at least once. Look out for it next time youâre reading Raymond Chandler or his ilk, I guarantee youâll find it.
To celebrate spring's return
(and my allergies)
I want to write a book called âyour character dies in the woodsâ that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.
I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.
Then she had a âmiserableâ 3 more miles to walk to the inn.
Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.
Are there any other particularly egregious examples?
This book already exists, sort of! Or at least, itâs a biology textbook but I bought it for writing purposes:
It starts with a chapter about freezing to death, and it is without a doubt the scariest thing Iâve read in years (and I read a lot of horror fiction).
This book can be downloaded for free on Researchgate, posted there by the author himself:

In Defense of Mai and Maiko, Letâs talk about seashells
Mai has been criticized and villainized relentlessly over her comment to Zuko when he gives her a seashell at the beach. Anti maikos consider her to be selfish, inconsiderate of Zukoâs feelings, and a toxic girlfriend out of this one action. But a key detail that most viewers forget is when Ty Lee snuggles up to the seashell bedspread in Lo and Liâs place, Mai explicitly verbalizes her disdain for seashells. And Zuko was there and heard her say this.
Ty Lee: Ooh, I love the seashell bedspread. [Rubs the pillow admiringly.]
Mai:[Frontal view.] Are you serious? It looks like the beach threw up all over it.
Zuko was clearly not in the right state of mind throughout the Beach episode. He was frustrated with himself, his surroundings, and caught in a moral disarray. There is no wonder as to why he would have remembered this small but important detail. But one thing remains clear. Mai does not like seashells, and she makes sure to show it, and Zuko hears it.
Later, Zuko gives Mai a seashell on the beach. Itâs a sweet effort, but it shows Zuko was not paying attention to what Mai had said a moment earlier. He might have heard it, but he didnât listen to her. Mai has every right to be upset with him. She isnât privy to Zukoâs turmoil and moral dilemma yet. But in the actual interaction, she isnât shown to be overbearingly upset or angry. She maintains a mellow demure and clearly states âWhy would I want that?â And why would she? She makes it abundantly clear she hates most things, especially things that appeal to normal girls. She expresses her frustration rather simply to Zuko.
Zuko: Here. This is for you.
Mai: why would I want that?
Zuko: I saw it and I thought it was pretty. Donât girls like stuff like this?
Mai: Maybe stupid girls.
She told Zuko, Azula, and Ty Lee that she hates seashells. Zuko offers her a seashell, making it clear he wasnât paying attention or listening to her when she said this. She later expresses her well justified frustration in a mostly calm way. She doesnât hold it over Zuko. She doesnât break up with him on the spot. Sheâs shown to still be enjoying her time with him under the umbrella.
Itâs so puzzling to me when I see anti-Maiko arguments - demonizing Mai for something that isnât her fault. Take a look here (I also mentioned in my previous post that I will be quoting directly from other posters, if you are uncomfortable let me know and I will remove the tag)
Now, if youâre in a romantic relationship with someone and your S/O gives you a gift and you throw it aside like it meant nothing to you, and then you proceed to act like a petulant child when they were just trying to do something nice for you â thatâs unhealthy. - @seapruncs
Mai was treating him like garbage the entire flipping time. Every time he tried to please her, she acted like he was the scum under her shoe. I mean so you donât like seashells, we get that, Mai, but would it kill you to thank him for trying? Itâs the thought that counts. I see people justifying her reaction on the basis that Zuko really ought to know what she likes. How? - @daughter-of-water
This comment is really funny because Mai disliking seashells isnât some unspoken fact that Zuko should have been magically aware of. She literally says it.
Friendly reminder that even when Zuko tried to do little things for Mai like give her sweet gifts, she spat them back in his face in mockery - @steambend
I fail to see how Mai spat a gift back in his face and mocked him when all she does is express genuine discontent that he gave her a gift that she explicitly says she doesnât like.
These comments are a small sample of dozens of takes on why mai is an evil, toxic, even abusive girlfriend for disliking the seashell on the beach. Do you see the misogyny here? Do you see how a female character is being mischaracterized based on an important part of an episode that is conveniently ignored?
In the next episode, we see how Mai and Zuko learn from their previous mistakes and grow as individuals and a couple, notably after the Beach revelations. Zuko cares so much about Mai that he asks her what she wants, listens to what she has to say, and gives her a gift that he knows she will enjoy. Mai graciously accepts the gift, acknowledges and appreciates Zukoâs effort.
Zuko: Tell me, if you can have anything you wanted right now, what would it be?
Mai: Hmm. A big fancy fruit tart, with rose petals on top.
Zuko: You know, being a prince and all, I might just be able to make that happen.
Mai: That would be impressive. I guess there are some nice perks with royalty.
Anyone can see two traumatized teenagers learning from their mistakes and becoming better individuals for it. Itâs a dynamic, growing relationship. Whats not to love about that?
