dying over how inconsistent my drawings are
i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict đ
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bushâs war on Iraq, so I think that.
1992 Los Angeles riots. My family was living in LA, we were actually just preparing to move so it's this weird mess of boxes and burning and my parents being outraged (not surprised) at the outcome of the trial. I feel like that being the first news story I can remember is very on brand since it was my parents who taught me how to protest.
Iran hostage crisis.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_hostage_crisis
Mostly because it was part of the news, every night, for 14 months (444 days). And I remember when it ended, and they got to go home.
I remember Diana & Charles getting married, bc I remember how big the train on her wedding dress was. I would have been... 3 or 4.
I vaguely remember the Iran-Contra scandal being on TV a lot when I was about 7-8, and it was like, I'm pretty sure I don't have to know about this yet. But somehow I kinda knew about it anyway.

Leave it to me to find a doll with a strange distribution in some random German Shop.
I had to read German for this gal. GERMAN!
Worth it. This doll is SO CUTE! I'm gonna die!

Iâve been thinking on it a bit further and I think that the reason that Nolanâs odyssey has the problems that it does is that itâs afraid to be seen as unserious for even one second.
Like they couldâve and in my opinion shouldâve had Zendaya as Athena descend from the heavens in full battle armor but they didnât. It wouldâve been accurate to the original text.
We canât have anything look rediculous in this movie though I guess. Canât have a cyclops thinking that a guy is named Nobody. Canât have a drugged up island of silly lotus eaters that Odysseus has to physically drag his men away from.
Anyways I did mostly enjoy this movie I swear but I wish theyâd gotten silly with it even just once.
Not only is it never allowed to be silly, it's never allowed to be glorious, to be powerful, to be beautiful.
Circe does not have a magnificent palace filled with nymphs and golden furniture. Calypso does not weave on a golden loom, her cave full of mighty trees dripping with grape vines. There is no Nausicaa and Arete in their palace of Orichalcum and magic boats which pilot themselves. Penelope does not have a wedding bed carved from a mighty olive tree, rooted to the rock of Ithaca.
Because Nolans movie is about the collapse of a cultural empire because people didn't respect God's laws enough. It's about a civilization degrading and fading, so he has no use for any of the majesty and wonder and humor of the homeric text. Everything needs to be grimy and decaying, collapsing in on itself.
And Adaptations are allowed to be different and it's broadly a good thing to have a strong directorial vision.
But it does remind me of Nolans Batman, which had no time for boy wonders and found family and silly puzzles because it needed to be about the righteous necessity of the post 9/11 surveillance state.

so many misguided metaphors around violence and desire. if the open maw of a panting beast fills you with the want to be devoured, that does not make you prey. while the rabbit trembles in fear, its deepest desire is to run. evolution demands it. in fact, the desire to be eaten does not make you any small animal at all.
it makes you a fruit.
Not to be rhe ten millionth person to say âUSAmerican President Donald Trump Is An Incoherent Public Speaker Whose Train Of Thought Can Be Best Described As Scat Jazzâ but I just remembered that when he talks at international events it is several dozen peopleâs job to translate what heâs saying and what he intends to say to world leaders in real time
And I desperately wish to hear how they do it
If anyone reading this isnât fluent enough in English to understand the sentences that man says, please know that he has essentially mixed a number of adjectives and topics together in a hat and is pulling them out at random like a horrible childrenâs game
Like that waxy jaundiced bitch will straight up be like âJ'Ă©tais sur internet l'autre jour â internet, la plus grande invention amĂ©ricaine. And people will lose their minds
International translators have had this problem for A While - if they *don't* clean up what he says to sound coherent, they look like they're doing a bad job.
Explore Trump translation challenges, tips for interpreters, and 2025 strategies for accurate political translation and Trumpslation success
oh my god
There was a scandal in Poland because one translator decided to translate him accurately, tone, vocabulary level and word salad tangents and all. Polish conservatives who don't speak English and previously only heard smoothed out translations that sounded coherent and used big words were up in arms about how the translator was "inserting her political agenda", "mocking him", "exaggerating", "purposefully trying to make him look bad" and "incredibly unprofessional". I listened to the translation in question. It was literally just accurate.
5. Sensitive and Controversial Language Trumpâs speeches occasionally contain misogynistic, sexist, or inflammatory language. Japanese interpreter Tsuruta, for example, faced challenges when translating sexualized remarks, ultimately opting for standard terminology to maintain professionalism. Similarly, Chinese translator Kumiko Torikai found certain lewd expressions ethically challenging, ultimately leading to her retirement. Navigating these situations requires skillful balancing of accuracy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that the translation is appropriate without distorting the original intent.
I don't know why the authors of PoliLingua act as if Trump's verbal misogyny and racism wasn't very much part of his "original intent".
it only now dawns on me that millions of people on this planet think Trump is way smarter than he is because translators have neglected to relate his violent speech accurately out of misunderstood politeness. Make the ape sound like a ape
We had a mini-scandal in the German translation/interpretation community last year about exactly this â the interpreter for the inauguration got sick of Trump's incoherence and made a remark into his mic that was not intended to be heard (here's my post on it).
seeing straight men be disgusted by booktok smut recommenders has actually radicalized me to the side of booktok smut recommenders. girls your taste may be atrocious but i will never disparage you for exposing mainstream discourse to the concept of soaking through your underwear. spent my whole life listening to men talk about penises itâs about time they get jumpscared by women talking about pussy in crude detail on social media. go forth and goon my warriors
I work at a bookstore and hearing one of my male coworkers call smutty romantasy "the downfall of society" because it's "literally just porn" radicalized me
Men have an entire industry. Entire industries dedicated to their sexualities. Let women have fantasy sex. there's not even a camera crew involved.
Left this in the notes

Here are some of my drawings that I recently made about Norata because I feel that this fandom needs it. I also have a headcanon where Norata sometimes gets phantom leg pains. (But I'll write a separate post about it when I have time.)
Did you know that GF wiki made an error regarding the ages of Norata and Aarch? Even though Aarch is the OLDER BROTHER, the wiki shows that he is younger than Norata by a year? đ And I know that the age gap between Norata and Aarch is probably only one, max 2 years. But I really wanted to draw fanart with little Norata and big brother Aarch, plus who's going to stop me?

i can let a lot of shit in the m*nster high and ev*r aft*r high tags slide, but âdiscordant color schemes are bad color schemesâ make me want to RIP MY HAIR OUT
discordant/complimentary color schemes ABSOLUTELY exist and provide excitement and visual tension. while drawing the eye to certain places/details!!! analogous color schemes are perfectly fine and great color schemes but theyre not the only good ones!!!!
Iâm passionate about color theory
Perky Paissa's face is all finished! Really funny how it all sort of comes together like that, when you have all the parts.
I'm knitting her a sweater right now that should tie the whole outfit together too. Hopefully.
