i fully get that spuffys donāt vibe with spike getting his soul back because the soul lore is just so damn irritating and it reflects the showās very juvinile and boring black and white morality but iām sorry i love that shit so much thatās peakkkkk romance to me. spike loved buffy so much he killed himself/the worst parts of himself for her. and then he actively hid this information from her cause he didnāt want her to feel like she owed him anything and he just wanted to be there for her in any way she needed. buffyās first relationship seeded the belief that loving her and being loved by her changes that person for the worst and every following relationship reinforced that belief. now sheās face to face with in the flesh proof that she doesnāt ruin people, that someoneās love for her would motivate them to change for the better in a way that no one even considered possible. many have said this but no one is doing it like spuffy.

bonus because they're extra insane for this
it really is crazy with how much joss whedon despised spike and spuffy just how fan-servicey buffy s7 is with the spuffy content, especially in the back half. like what do u mean buffy has a falling out with her long-time mentor over spike and consistently brings it up in conversation, referring to him as "the only one who has her back" and then in support of these claims everyone in the world turns on her except for him, and he gives them all a dressing down about it then runs away to find her, where he then spends three full minutes singing her praises, ending in a love confession, followed by a cuddle sesh. this is just fanfic. i think that's just a fanfiction.

the television program buffy the vampire slayer is absolutely nooootttttt about the power of friendship. its about the tragedy of being surrounded by people who are too uncomfortable with your painful reality to be willing to meaningfully engage with you
being the slayer is a terminal illness that grosses everyone out if they think too hard about it
iām like that kid in the story, the boy who stuck his finger in the duck.
spuffy is a canon ship you can never quite believe is actually canon, which is the reason why people are still writing fic about them 25 years later
"That's what I need. Someone I can count on."
why does no one appreciate this scene like i do

spuffy truly is just⦠unbelievable. i think the reason this ship gets me is that it goes so far beyond what a ship usually does, itās what it encompasses, what it represents, what itās ABOUT. the struggle between good and evil. the nature of love. being alive. humanity.
on one hand youāve got buffy the vampire slayer, the chosen one in her generation, she alone who will stand against the vampires. on the other hand youāve got spike, william the bloody, one of the most evil vampires of his time, named after his favourite torture method, the slayer of slayers. and then the show goes what if⦠he fell in love with her?
but that wasnāt supposed to happen. spike was supposed to be killed off, buffyās great love was supposed to be angel. according to the showās soul lore it shouldnāt even be possible. yet it does happen⦠turning everything upside down in the process. the show is forced to redefine what it previously established, redefine the way it understood vampires, the way it created them.
itās forced to raise the question of how much, in a vampire, there is left of the human they used to be, and to what extent the kind of person they were before affects their personality as a vampire (william being first and foremost someone who loves), and really by asking what makes a vampire itās asking what makes us human. obviously the answer is love.
and so you end up with this beautiful, tragic struggle between a girl whose entire purpose in life is based on the belief that a soulless vampire is an evil being who canāt feel anything real and whoās not capable of love (āyouāre dead insideā), and a soulless vampire who loves her with the utmost devotion despite his twisted ways and longs to be loved in return (āand he will be lovedā) even when he knows itās impossible.
no matter how she feels she cannot let herself love him, because he doesnāt have a soul. heās the undead and she comes back to life, but she feels dead inside (this isnāt real/but i just want to feel) while he feels a little more alive (i died so many years ago/you can make me feel). in order for them to meet she has to lower herself down to his level (beneath her), which she does for a time, or he has to raise himself up to her level (to be a kind of man), which he does eventually. they both have to face the monster inside of them, which they see reflected in the other person. she goes to heaven and back, losing a piece of herself, not fitting in anymore, and falls into the darkness with him (i touch the fire and it freezes me/i look into it and itās black); he goes to hell and back, finding the missing piece that would make him fit, and rises into the light with her (they put the spark in me and now all it does is burn).
spuffy is about how treating someone with dignity and respect, believing in their ability to do good, to be good, to be better than they were, will make even the most evil, unredeemable monster want to change (āi know that iām a monster, but you treat me like a manā). will make something want to become someone, will make a man do what he musnāt, will make a vampire get his soul back despite the agony of it. itās a love so great it makes a character fight and change his own nature, a show rewrite its own lore. idk⦠i think thatās pretty neat.

obsessed with scenes in btvs where spike has no major lines and his only objective is to mog in the background
genuinely cannot believe it takes spike and buffy about ten seconds to fall into such an intense psychic lockstep that during their second interaction. ever. in their lives. they flirtatiously toss aside their weapons just so they can get their hands on one another. instinctively trusting in the other's sense of honor. approaching their fight like it's play like it's dancing like it's already played out a hundred times and like they're just getting started. they just met a fucking nanosecond ago. they have known each other for lifetimes. i am clawing at the walls

Spike might be the most basic blorbo I've ever had. Like ugh yes my favorite character is the blonde british vampire who's in love with the main character. I thought I was too cool and gay to care this much about an evil white boy but here we are
