One of the many reasons I loved the dream SMP was 1) because it was comprised mainly of pvpers and speedrunners, with hardly any building or redstone specialists, and 2) entering the End was forbidden and the End never factored into the SMP at any point. It led to a lack of resources and infrastructure that gave the server a medieval feeling to it. Players who accumulated a lot of resources usually did so through solo grinding. No one could make communal resource farms because they'd all be at risk of becoming pieces in the geopolitical war games, and/or being destroyed (I think the only piece of communal infrastructure that survived unscathed was the underground spider farm near the Eggpire). People didn't have elytra, and roads were constantly being destroyed, so the primary method of rapid transportation was Riptide tridents, which as far as I'm aware is pretty unique to the Dream SMP and showcases the really awesome and interesting alternatives that can develop in a no-End lategame. God the dog-eat-dog worlds that a bunch of bored men create are hell to live in and absolutely marvellous to tell stories in. The SMPs with End access and reliable resource reserves and infrastructure just can't compare.

in general i hate how people talk about the plot/story/lore of dsmp in retrospect. even ex-fans act like it was embarrassing and cringe to ever like it. there's this common take i see that's like, "it was only good because of what the fics and fanart and animatics made it." and while i do agree it never would've reached the heights it did without the fanbase, people were able to make such compelling works in the first place because the source material was... good? it was literally good guys. you're allowed to think it was good.

you people dont fucking understand its not wc. its not. its not even closely related to wc. wc animators KNOW their worth. they know how sexy they are. they know. its not about them its not about them its about fucking minecraft ok are you happy its about minecraft

the dream smp is my homestuck. you just had to be there to experience it as it was happening. every time it breached containment (which was often) it dealt extreme psychic damage to whatever random internet users stumbled across it. you technically can go back and go through all of the canon content but it’s tricky and it takes forever. the lore is literally insane and people who weren’t there for it rarely even would believe some of the things that happened in canon. the fandom was (and is) held together by cosplayers, fan artists and animators, and fic writers.

A big problem with the dream smp is that it genuinely has some of the most interestingly crazy character concepts I’ve ever seen, however it is impossible to articulate this to anyone even slightly normal
