anyways, I'm still so angry over that Deadline article about Disney nuking Ncuti Gatwa's era of Doctor Who because of "woke" (not even kidding), because they received "overwhelming" feedback that the show was "too woke" for international audiences. It will never not piss me the fuck off how woke was/is literally aave for being politically aware that's been so co-opted by white establishment conservatives that this bastardised co-opted colonised concept of "woke" is now weaponised against Black people, people of colour and other marginalised people to justify casting us down and out. A literal fuckinf alien was played by a Black gay actor and old white people lost their shit and now a 60 yr old show is basically dead because some white people hated they weren't being directly pandered to. I’m still obsessed with the acceleration scene in gate of the feral gods and with the plot thread of the AI’s ongoing sexual harassment of Carl in general. Like, it’s so good in the way that it’s played half as a joke but also really not actually a joke. Sexual harassment as fridge horror. Gate of the feral gods is the first time Carl just straight up refuses to play into the AI’s fetishes, because it makes him uncomfortable and he doesn’t want to—and the AI immediately gets violent with him when he refuses (throws hoards of deadly monsters at him). The AI’s given Carl a lot of perks and a lot of help because of its crush on him, but he’s just not allowed to say no to it. And I think it was very deliberate that this scene was directly preceded by a discussion of Bea’s controlling behavior, and how she abused Carl. God this scene hits so good
