In the global political climate we're currently in, they took a story that critically examined pacifism as a choice of inaction that sometimes led to more suffering.

And turned it into a story where pacifism from the victims of aggression towards their aggressor is the only way forward. The only good and kind and right thing to do. It always works out. There are never consequences for pacifism, nobody gets hurt, it's the only good option, for good people.

It turned from a story that condemned Knives' actions, one where Vash openly called out the fact that he used a singular event as an excuse to wipe out a group of people (humans in this case) and that he was being driven by fear and hatred.

To a story that says "well how do you think HE feels? Did you even consider how he feels about the singular event the mean people inflicted on someone like him? Maybe you should sympathise with his goal of genocide?"

Like it is that deep. Art and media reflect attitudes towards real life events. It is BIZARRE that they've retconned Vash knowing about Rem's involvement and forgiving her, purely to make Knives' feelings and position seems more valid. It is BIZARRE that there's a running theme of spared villains suddenly becoming kind and good purely because Vash didn't kill them.

Shit even BADLANDS RUMBLE understood the core premise of Trigun more than this slop. Criticise it all you want, it kept coming back to the idea that Vash letting villains go because he didn't want their deaths on his conscience was a selfish act because he was rolling the dice for someone else who doesn't have that same agency.
