The legislation faces an uphill battle in the Senate.

Deep fucking sigh. The SAVE America Act, or the voting rights overhaul that restricts mail-in voting and voter registration, requires presentation of a passport or birth certificate to register and a state ID at the polls, and now Trump wants to throw in anti-trans stuff just because, is in the Senate, and it's unpopular even with Republicans.

You know what you need to do. US citizens, call your Senators. ESPECIALLY if they're Republican. Republicans are balking and your voice is crucial to get them to stand strong.

Always remember: if voting didn't change anything, they wouldn't be trying so hard to make it illegal.

If you have conservative reps/family, remind them that many, many people do not have a passport or easy access to their birth certificate. And if your name doesn’t match (eg. Marriage name change) you can “provide additional documents” but there are absolutely going to be issues there. You can use utility bills to support your current name, but if you’ve ever changed your name, you know it’s a mess, and there’s not coherent guidance. Also, what if the bills are in your husband’s name? This will affect a lot of people, but if you want to persuade conservatives, that’s the angle I’d point out; the largest bloc to be disenfranchised will be conservative married white ladies who aren’t super involved in politics.

Also college age everybody, because most college kids don’t have their birth certificate on hand, AND if there’s no mail in option, you’d need to go back to your resident state.

But my actual objection? Getting a passport takes time and some money. Getting a new copy of your birth certificate can take a while, and costs a smaller amount of money. Either way: that’s a poll tax.

Ten days ago, the social chat app Discord announced that it would launch “teen-by-default” settings for its global audience. As part of this update, all new and existing users worldwide will have a teen-appropriate experience, with updated communication settings, restricted access to age-gated spaces, and content filtering that preserves privacy and meaningful connections, the platform said. This, of course, means that to use Discord the way you are used to, you’ll have to let it scan your face, and the internet wasn’t happy. Many communities quickly announced their move to other platforms. Others, like the security researcher Celeste, who goes by the handle vmfunc, were convinced there would be a workaround. Together with two other researchers, they set out to look into Persona, the San Francisco-based startup that’s used by Discord for biometric identity verification – and found a Persona frontend exposed to the open internet on a US government authorized server.

Hey do y’all remember when Boeing fucking killed a guy last year. And we all said “huh I guess Boeing fucking killed a guy” and then went on with our lives. And everybody knew that Boeing had fully just fucking executed a guy and nothing came of it. Like there was no police investigation no justice no nothing. Like literally EVERYBODY knew that Boeing had full on murdered a guy to silence him and there wasn’t any consequences for them. Kinda crazy.

So for those who are, very understandably uninitiated on this story:

On 23 October last year (2024) the New York Times published an interview with former OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji who worked on organising and gathering data for OpenAI until 2022 when he begun thinking about the morality of it. He eventually came to the conclusion that what OpenAI is doing blatantly violates copyright law and decided to leave the company altogether in August 2024.

After he came out with this accusation he was set to appear in court to testify against OpenAI’s data-gathering practices, something which had the potential of being a complete disaster for the company and the generative AI industry as a whole.

That was until 26 November, just days before he was due to appear in court, when he suddenly and mysteriously was found dead inside his own apartment. Investigators concluded that the death was self-inflicted, something which his family has disputed.

There was also “sign of struggle in the bathroom and looks like someone hit him in the bathroom based on blood spots”, and his apartment showed signs of having been ransacked for evidence: “The pin drive is missing. His computer was messed up.”.

Overall it feels pretty clear-cut what happened, that is to say that OpenAI had him killed because he was a legitimate threat to their business, indicating that they are fully aware that the way they’re gathering data is completely illegal.
