“You don’t understand. It was pouring rain drumming all over the windshield and I couldn’t even see the road in all the midnight and curtains of rain, but the driver could. The driver could see through all that darkness while smoking with one hand off the wheel, water skidding under us, and he’s taking huffs between his fingers like he’s taking a prayer. With that same mouth he’s chatting up the 18 year-old girl sitting next to him. He’s 40. He got her number. He got her number??? His gross cigarette smoke wafted all over my face every time he puffed, and in the back the guy I’m squished next to with all the bags was so fat, sweating all over my arm and leg and also smelly. He snored so loud, I could still hear it over the loud ahh music playing in the car. And all that cigarette smoke only had this tiny crack in the window to escape from, it was so cancerous in there, and every time it thundered it sounded like a literal plane was taking off on the metal box that we’re in. Dude drove amazing; he didn’t crash at all. Driver made me pay an extra $60 that was completely not in the original deal because “it’s 4am”, — and so I thanked him and paid the extra —and so he dropped me off at the edge of the neighborhood instead of by our building, and so I thanked him and then walked ten minutes home completed drenched in the storm. That car ride was so doomed and so fucking amazing I loved it so so much you don’t understand.”

As if Green is not the one who kept on killing me. Over and over again. As I follow them around tryna talk. And they laugh and be like “lore accurate” . As they kill me. Until under my efforts their stone heart finally gives in and they jump right to talking about… making babies???
Afterwards I find out the guy who plays Green goes by he/him and I feel terrible. It makes so much sense. I forgot there’s another type of Green fans. So that’s why he was trying to run away from the yaouri!!! I’m so sorry 😭
stalker!! stalker!! there’s absolutely no reason for you to be able to find my posts other than if you’re clicking into my profile!!

I used to have a digital epub of Journey to the West on my phone where there’s three ancient dudes’s commentaries spliced in. I downloaded it from the internet. It’s something like:
Dude A: before you read the chapter, here is the entire chapter through the lens of Buddhist allegory
Dude B: now that that guy has shut up, let me summarize everything at the end of the chapter and tell you about how it’s actually Taoist cultivation and alchemy
Dude C: “lolz”, “ouch”, “this fucker!”, “W poem”, “did he just piss in the soup?”, “guanyin the bodhisattva is so cruel”, “tripitaka you’re a monk stop staring at the women”
Does anyone know what version of jttw this is? I lost my copy and would love to have it again.

I know you’re into the Rusty Lake Paradise video game right now but can I ask you for possible among us show analysis?
Why do you think Green didn’t just kill one of Purple or Red at the end? Why would Green run away into the vents when Red attacks? Could there be. Possible character motivations, or do you think it’s just purely to make the good guys win?
Oh it was absolutely a complete plot contrivance. At most you can try to justify Green running away when being found out by momentary shock. The writers made the impostors too strong to realistically lose, is all. Now, I don't mind that, it makes for a better spectacle, but it means these kinds of situations will sometimes happen. I can pretend it was because of deep, unspoken character motivations if you want, though I have no idea what I could possibly say they were.
So I started playing The Mermaid Mask when it came out (2 hours ago). I know all the chracters since I followed the game before it released, but I only talked to 3 people so far. I'm mostly writing this here as proof of what my thoughts are at the moment.
Gripp is so the killer, you can fucking quote me on that. And it's not just "the goofy silly guy turns out to be evil" either. Just in one conversation there's so much. His stick just so happened to need reaparing the night of the murder; he specifically said he "lacks upper body strength"; he has the most ironclad alibi for what is initially implied to be the exact second of the murder, yet after that stayed alone in a room he had no bussiness in for some time; he didn't go investigate the weird mysterious sounds after hearing different weird mysterious sounds a few minutes earlier because of "cowardice"; he's one of the closest people to the victim in the cast.
With murder mysteries I usually pick one suspect and try to force a solution around it, but I think I have something going for me this time.
I finished the game a day after this post. The worst part is, I can't even talk about it now because I live in the vain hope of making you play it and I don't want to spoil it.
I liked Tangle Tower a lot since 2019. I fucking loved The Mermaid Mask. I didn't really expect the cosmic horror angle, but I'm not complaining, it's great. Please play it. Like actually, it's so good. Though maybe start with Tangle Tower; it's less technologically advanced and the ending is weaker, but it's still very fun.
I didn’t think it was him until he started being very surprised that there was a recording of the culprit and the captain opening the black box. Very suspicious reaction. But that was practically at the very end, when we were presenting the evidences to everyone.
Gripp being the third person during Felicia and Mortuga’s voyage was one hell of a reveal. I enjoyed all the reveals very much. It’s like a retelling of the captain’s past history that we’ve been slowly piecing together the entire game, and the retelling changes how we view the entire story based on just one element added — Gripp being there. Like before, with just Mortuga and Felicia it’s a wholesome and perhaps melancholic story, and with Gripp added in it’s just one guy burning through everything to chase after this “unknown”.
Gripp staging a hot-air balloon crash so that the good guy Captain Mortuga can save him and thus bring him along the voyage is such an overused strategy by the demons in my favorite mythology book Journey to the West. Very random fact. But I just wanted to say that I love Gripp very much for this. This guy…
Uhhhhhh other random thoughts:
Mariana and Wirman should’ve became friends. They have such author vibes together. I understand that Mariana wants to be alone and mysteriously wandering though. She’s such a vibe
Glad that Sym and Sinthia get to go on adventures that doesn’t involve forever being in the bottom of the ocean. Tangle Tower reference I think
And that tadpole and zephyr gets to stay at the bottom of the ocean I guess since they kind of belong there
The art is so so beautiful
It’s funny that Felicia put on the Mermaids Mask, but I’m guessing all three of them — Felicia, Gripp, and Mortuga — were all spoken to by the mermaid? So is that why both Mortuga and Gripp both have some screws loose in their noggins, because we were told that the Mermaid Mask is a translator that lets you communicate with the mermaid without losing your mind.
Did Felicia BECOME the mermaid??? That mermaid was a straight up blond woman. Like why did Fecilia had that key specifically for the Mermaid’s Mask as her necklace anyways? It was even passed down from her mom. Maybe The Stonetops and the Seafoams have some sort of relationship because of that one news article where it seems like two of their ancestors found the sea serpent?
Not the Box That Was Actually Really Easily Opened… why was that an entire chapter…
Gripp throwing us a fixed compass before he summons the mermaid 😭😭 he really was looking out for us… even as an awol murderer… he’s not taking pleasure in killing or anything he just really wants that mermaid…
I guess the conclusion for chapter 1, that whatever was inside the cauldron is what killed Mortuga, was a red herring. MAN I fell for that red herring hard. I honestly was telling myself that the shape shifting impostor came out of the cauldron and went into the vents, that’s why there’s critter noises there
I wonder if anyone wrote fanfictions about Gripp’s life after he joined the mermaid… what would that be like…
Got a girls trip soon. Brainstorming how I can get my ex best friend to cuddle in bed with me.
To that ONE person who saw the old post I deleted. Yes it’s the same person I’m talking about. She invited me, and I miss waking up to her cuddling my shoulder. I have like one night to make cuddling happen again.
Current plan:
try to read her mind during the trip to get her whatever she wants
make sure she eats a good dinner
make sure she isn’t too tired (aka help her do stuff)
get to the hotel room early
the Netflix-and-chill : suggest a show to watch in bed together? Need to bring laptop. she likes gay shows. Problem is I’m not caught up on the popular gay media. Would need to do research.
She gets beside me and I put the hotel blanket around the two of us
desperately trying to hit up the randall park impression guy so i dont have to be emotionally vulnerable with bojack horseman (this is a fandub, ORIGINAL ANIMATIC BY @milkie2 !!!)
"The thing is only acting in self defense because it gets attacked first"
The very first experience it has with the base crew is that they save it from people shooting at it, give it warm hugs, and kill the people trying to deatroy it. After that it attacks and impersonates an unknown (at the time) member of the crew. After that it gets surrounded by dogs who are angry but too scared to approach, then it changes, then it attacks the huskies, and only then does anyone in the base camp treat it with hostility.
You can imagine anything you want for the unknowns (before the movie starts, whether it can tell animals apart, etc), but you are fully wrong if you characterize its reception as being preemptively attacked. You can interpret things lots of ways, but saying the humans at the camp attack it first is factually wrong.
"None of the men know each other enough to recognize an impersonation."
The entire first act of the movie is devoted to establishing that they know each other with an Intimacy so deep they can anticipate one another's actions and attitudes. They have been in an isolated arctic base for months and months where they can barely leave the same building. They are in one another's personal space throughout the movie. It's a vital plot point that the Thing can immitate people down to memories and personality traits. It's a vital metaphorical point as well. It's so deeply and fundamentally superficial and factually incorrect to call them unfamiliar with each other that it implies total inattention to what is happening on screen.
There are so, so many completely reasonable ways to read ideas of social disaffectation, queerness, and more into the text of the movie without misrepresenting the factual text. I'm screaming and crying and throwing up blood, what else would everyone like to propose about horror movies that sounds great aside from being entirely spurious? Someone told me psychological thrillers are the only good horror movies an hour and a half ago, we could start there. I want people to think in these ways about horror but also talking about it in a way that depends on the the text of the film does require a certain amount of knowing the actual text of the film.
Actually I think this is important tags that speak to a larger idea about horror conversation:
The Thing is, at heart, not a movie about any singular decision or behavior creating a bad outcome. Baked into the 1982 movie is failure, death, entropy, inevitable loss. It's not a movie that's meant to have a right solution, or a right decision - but when someone comes at this very bleak story without a good grounding in horror, there's a kind of urge to treat it like a puzzle. If only they were closer. If only they communicated.
That's not meeting it where it's at, because it rests on a situation where none of those elements really exist. People acted the best they could in the circumstances with the tools and information they had - and it simply was not enough. Nearly everyone dies. Even with the ambiguous ending, whoever is human is going to die, because it's winter in Antarctica and he is hundreds of miles from anywhere with no shelter and no food and no transportation. That's the sort of horror it is, the idea that when faced with extinction humanity's best efforts won't succeed. Creating an interpretation where if we had "just" this or that is shying away from the bleakness. But at the same time, not facing up to the idea that some things really might not be solvable, that the worst can happen in spite of it all, is a necessary skill. Not one we need to indulge in constantly, but we should have that knowledge.
And in a greater capacity, this is where I see things go very wrong when someone unfamiliar with or disdainful of horror tries to expound on the genre. It comes from a place of not wanting bad things to happen - not rose colored glasses or naivete - but not wanting the animal to die, not wanting the house to burn, not wanting the parents to lose a child. Not wanting to feel sick or hurt, a normal and human response to a genre which constantly steps over those lines, and quite often does so artlessly and with nothing but puerile shock at heart. That makes it difficult to examine in good faith, and wanting to see horror as something good for oneself leads most people to look for the places where horror doesn't stray close to the boundaries. Solving the problem of "bad horror" by presenting horror comedy or psychological thrillers as better side of horror, for example. But that's just another case of wanting to solve something that doesn't exist to have a solution. Part of getting the genre is recognizing not only that bad things happen in horror, but the ugly and awful and transgressive side is not a mistaken choice, not an error. It's part of what horror is, like a person, you can't understand it without understanding what you dislike along with what you like. Horror can't be corrected out of a set of flaws, those have to be accepted as part of seeing the genre as a whole.
I'm using this post to add on why I keep a pretty safe distance between me and the media I'm a fan of, and the fandom. This is a useful place to start, because it's touching on the technical parts of fandom that drive me up a wall.
In brief, fandom seems to be predominantly comprised of people who only want to talk about what isn't in the media. There is a fandom for The Thing on tumble, and it's very much about ideas that come from the movie, but not about anything innthe actual film. The few times I've had the misfortune to enjoy media with a large fandom, I find almost exclusively shipping, fantasies about specific characters antithetical to the subject matter, and an almost oppositional distaste for any of the actual intended or unintended meaning in the media. None of those are a problem per se, because the world is a big place and it doesn't matter in the grand picture what people want to pretended about a book or movie or TV series. This is mostly a me problem, where I can be perfectly fine and ignore what comes across my dashboard, but this is also a me post, which means I can complain about the phenomenon.
Anyway, where I find it frustrating is the encroachment of fandom focus on what isn't in the media into my little wading pool of enjoying digging through the ideas that are in the media, when a "what if it was completely different" idea inspired by the media gains so much traction that it begins to be treated as a reflection of the text, sometimes even exiting its primary fandom, like The Thing, into general circulation. Which is how you get people discussing the "creature is misunderstood" not-present ideas of The Thing by fandoms, while effectively ignoring the vastly more significant elements of the film relating to the Reagan era 1980s, cold war paranoia, and so on. Once a fandom non-textual idea propagates far enough, it not only occludes the ideas inside the original media, in my experience it almost invariably excises anything that was challenging about it. For example, how rapidly fandom's latched onto the idea of Remmick in Sinners as a misunderstood tragic figure - rather than anything to do with what the film is saying about systemic racism. It feels like a companion behavior towards people whose take away from media like Breaking Bad, Fight Club, or Obsession is that the male protagonist is meant to be viewed in a positive light - because that is an easy and more comfortable option than for example treating any character who isn't a guy or isn't white or isn't straight as a vital, human person at the center of the film.
And to bring it all back to The Thing, that's why the fandom, who do not care about the text of the film, are such a source of frustration. Wanting it to be about a nice monster is also not wanting to sit with the way the film approaches human trust and the speed with which a belief in everyone being a potential enemy creates systemic breakdown. It's much less comfortable to examine human flaws inside best intentions, and fandom effectively pushes that uncomfortable idea entirely out of its sandbox.

(I wanna yap about playing among us after the among us show)
I play in vc with some discord ppl I found online. They play Town of MIRA and helped me install the mods.
I’m so bad at both impostor and crew it became a running joke. At one point whenever I kill they just go all grinning and say “pwenci do you have something to confess?” because that fucking WORKED ON ME FOR SOME REASON.
never mind the times the impostor guesses the extent of my thinking and uses me to vouch for them.
“And why, pwenci, am I not the impostor?”
“… (shakes) because I saw you at admin table the entire time?”
“Yes! Exactly!”
She was the impostor.
I’m beginning to think the impostors leave me alive because I’m stupid.
But hey, at least when I’m crew I don’t get sussed as impostor because the kills were too good so it couldn’t have been me! Even if I literally shoot a crew in front of someone.
“Um. Pwenci just killed infront of me.”
“I made a mistake. But I’m not bad.”
My role is Deputy.
“Okay. I believe it.”
Impostor says, “Wait, so pwenci is just getting away with murder?”
We then eject the impostor. Even though I killed. They somehow know. Maybe because I didn’t fucking confess to being the impostor. Maybe because they know I don’t have the extent of thinking to come up with a lie like that. Thus we win.
playing imposter is actually a humiliation ritual when youre a bad liar and only really play as a result of being interested in the game again after watching the show
killed twice and i had no idea that there was a toggle where imposters couldnt hear noisemaker,
"green, why'd you go past electrical?"
",,,i"
somehow for some reason didnt vote me out, killed again
"green. green you're going up from storage, theres a noisemaker body in storage"
",,,,"
partner desperately trying to save my ass, "well hey, arent they new? green, do you even know what noisemaker is?" (asks AFTER votes have already been cast and im ejected)
i actually freak out so bad during imp rounds, im an awful liar
