Animal Crackers for Zoologists
Watching any Shakespeare play for the first time is always fun because you get to find out where another 5% of the famous quotes and figures of speech you've ever heard come from.

The reason you can't be the next J R R Tolkien isn't because you don't have the talent, but because you're not the right kind of unwell. Tolkien wasn't bent for fantasy worldbuilding; he was bent for constructed languages, and got into fantasy worldbuilding in order to provide a material context in which to ground the notional evolution of the languages he invented. If you want to be the next Tolkien, you can't start with the worldbuilding; you've gotta find something extremely specific to fixate on, and develop it in such depth that inventing a world to contain it is genuinely the most logical next step.
#the best route is clearly to get really into a specific kink scenario and invent a world to justify it (via @salix03)
That's not even a joke. Developing a kink scenario so elaborate and so excruciatingly particular that it can only properly be contemplated in the frame of a world created specifically to contain it is genuinely closer to Tolkien's actual creative process than 99% of the stuff that plays at being heir to his legacy.
The whole Polybius thing is my favourite conspiracy theory because nearly every individual element of the story is absolutely true, but not for that reason.
Did some early arcade games cause people to suffer hallucinations, memory loss, and short-term personality changes? Yes, they did – because many folks who played them were experiencing close range exposure to bright, rapidly flashing lights for the first time in their lives, and – at the time – public awareness of photosensitive epilepsy was practically nonexistent. Most who had it were undiagnosed, and its symptoms often weren’t recognised when they arose – and if you have no idea what photosensitive epilepsy is, those symptoms might look a lot like alien mind control!
Were early video arcades frequented by serious-looking men in dark suits? Again, yes they were – because they were suspected of being money-laundering fronts for illegal gambling rings, and thus were routinely placed under federal surveillance. And those suspicions weren’t unfounded – it later transpired that many early video arcades were, in fact, money-laundering fronts for illegal gambling rings.
Did arcade cabinets with strange titles and indecipherable gameplay quietly pop up in out-of-the-way places, then vanish shortly thereafter, never to be seen again? Absolutely – because a thriving black market in off-brand bootlegs arose almost immediately. Quality control was nonexistent, so many such cabinets had operational lifespans measured in weeks, and you’d most often see them in arcades with poor locations simply because they were cheap.
It was a perfect storm of largely unrelated factors that added up to the convincing appearance of a shadowy conspiracy, even though each element by itself had a fairly boring explanation.
The word you are looking for is an ensemble cast. You like the ensemble cast. Not found family.
sad news, my son Crispin Shopify III saw a picture of me when i was breastfeeding him as a baby. the psychiatrists all agreed that exposure to this act which is potentially incestuous and sexual was equivalent to infinite permanent sexual trauma, and so we've decided to euthanize him and just start again from the beginning. hopefully i wont fuck it up again this time. god bless.
Been sick for over a week and these tags sent me into several coughing fits from laughing. I love it here I could never truly leave

my parents are on holiday in their mobile home
they're expected back this upcoming weekend
I just spent ten days in my childhood home to keep an eye on things
I have hidden 100 small yellow ducks all over the house
I am very excited for my parents to be back
a first update: we have a neighbour who empties the mailbox while my parents are away and this morning I got a notification from our front door camera and watched said neighbour find what I know to be a tiny yellow duck in the mailbox (the camera is too far away to actually see), stare at it for a moment, and place it carefully back inside the mailbox
THE FIRST DUCK HAS BEEN FOUND
They just came home after a friend's birthday party and I'm guessing went straight to bed, because my dad just sent a photo to the family group chat of the duck I placed on his bed with only the caption "thank you 😘" which makes me suspect they haven't found any of the others yet. Or noticed that this one has a number on the bottom.
Tomorrow they're going to find more of them and realise what they're in for and that's when the real joy begins.
I just spent half an hour on the phone with my dad mostly giggling maniacally while he complained at me. He thought it was a singular duck and then went to get fresh PJs and "another bloody duck" fell out and now he can't rest until he has found as many as possible. It is half an hour to midnight, he is prowling the house trying to spot more ducks, and he begrudgingly admitted he still loves me anyway. My mother is significantly less invested but not caring does not protect you from The Ducks. I am absolutely ecstatic with how this is going.
If I ever need to explain my parents' different personalities to somebody who does not know them, it will be like this: my dad, upon finding the second duck in his pyjamas, refused to believe that there would be more of them, and then went absolutely feral with the hunting instincts of a particularly determined bloodhound. He found 40 of them within about an hour. He has created an Excel sheet to keep track of which ones are still missing (I wrote numbers on the bottom of each duck). He keeps calling me to swear at me and then grumble that he still loves me.
He did not appreciate it when I told him about zookeepers throwing a pumpkin full of meat into a tiger enclosure.
My mother, on the other hand, thinks the whole thing is hilarious. She loves the ducks. She has accepted the ducks. She's sad that my dad insists on collecting the ducks because she thinks they should just stay where they are and become part of the decor. "I reckon I will find them when I find them," she says. I told her that I had to replace one because the original number 4 dropped on the tiles and got decapitated and she thinks I should dramatically stage it next time I visit.

As of September 2nd, the official Duck Count is at 79, which is honestly really impressive. The rate of discovery has obviously slowed down a lot as the more obvious ducks have been found, so we've now finally reached the point at which I think even my dad is not so much actively searching anymore as he is Always Ready For Duck. In the last couple of days he found one in a packet of tissues and texted me "there was one in the q-tips today" to which I responded, naturally, "It's been there the whole time B)"
I did spend a night at the house last week because I didn't want to get stuck at a train station at 11pm on a Sunday, and my dad insisted that I must have lied or misremembered when I told him there were a total of 4 ducks in his office, because he has found 3 and is absolutely adamant that there can't be another one (there is. It's in a box of paperclips in the drawer that he likes to keep half-open to rest documents on. It's even visible if you look down at it).
I also told them about the incident with our neighbour and that I had deleted the clip from the security camera's app as well as the clip of me heading into the garage with the keys to my dad's classic car (I stuck a duck in front of the speedometer) and they now think I am a criminal mastermind, which is honestly pretty fun considering my extreme lack of coolness in almost all other regards.
It's my mum's birthday in a couple of weeks and I'm honestly really looking forward to telling this story to friends and family! I haven't come up with a present for her yet but I think maybe I'll include one of the extra ducks I kept, just for fun!
I've been looking for a fun/quick little animation sideproject to flex my frame-by-frame muscles, so introducing Margie! A cat-goose dragon based on this little fella from this medieval manuscript
Some additional thoughts
The full saga of Margie and the Nuns (so far). Realised I never compiled these in one place.! Also, bonus Margies!
Reblog this photo of a käpylehmä to have a käpylehmä in your blog
It's a trick! If you reblog you get TWO käpylehmäs in your blog!
They're traditional Finnish toys, little cows made out of spruce cones, on their way to see the world from one tumblr blog to another

"can our ai assistant help you?" "give our ai mode a try !" "our ai assistant is your new best friend !"
Once again, we see the succinct power of the Demeter section and the punch it delivers with so little description. We scarcely know anyone’s name, but we still know their danger, we know what the captain now sits on the ship with–his terror, his fatigued devotion to duty, and the undead monster man himself. We know the log has gone into a bottle for safekeeping. He can’t write with bound hands on the helm.
And now, we get to wonder: what does Dracula do with this, an empty ship and the last (barely) living morsel aboard? I imagine he now constantly walks abroad. Idling. Chatting. Thanking the captain so kindly for the fine cuisine on his cruise. Maybe he feigns ignorance over whether he was thoughtful enough to snap the men’s necks before he dumped the corpses overboard or if, silly him, he forgot to gift them euthanasia and they are now all waterlogged undead, stalking along the ocean floor, gnawing sea life as they trudge in search of a shore.
Because Dracula being Dracula, he won’t resist a good slow knife twist when it’s down to a one-on-one intimate sadism session.
Oh captain, my captain, you sound like a good man. Like everyone else in the Count’s path, you don’t deserve what comes next.
@nooby-banana what do you think is worse?
A) Dwelling underwater, crushed by the pressure, unable to die, but able to starve, preying desperately on the frightened marine life as you scramble for each other’s company in the sunless gloom like a school of bloodsucking fish?
B) All of the above, but trailing after your ship, collecting more of your fellows as you go, until the living first mate plunges over the edge, thinking himself safe in drowning–only to find your teeth waiting?
C) All of the above, but finally, eventually, finding a moonlit shore to lurch up to, all brine and cold blood, following the ghost of an old sailor’s instinct–you have landed, and you wish for a drink. A seaside tavern is not a home. It needs no invitation as it glows against the night. Welcome, welcome, where have our old favorites been so long? We thought you dea–
D) All of the above, but you agree upon making a new legend. One just for the water which is grave and home. Dead men tell no tales, but they do drink deep. A story begins to flit among the living, of places a ship dare not cross by night. There are strange things swimming in sunless water now. Things that scale the hull like lizards and siphon a body like leeches. But at least the strange things have the decency to kill a man outright. There are worse things than dying as a man. You show them so as you open your mouth, pocked with barnacles and dripping seawater.
