I saw the rat again yesterday and today. He seems young. He darts around with no particular direction but is alert so I don't think he's been poisoned. I think he's trying to find somewhere to live and is thinking my yard might be a good spot. I honestly feel bad for driving the little guy out but I'd rather not have a rat colony on my hands. I think he's taking the contraceptive bait, so at least he's on the rat pill. I'm going to take out the remaining buttercup and dock foliage out on Sunday with horticultural vinegar. I ordered some sustainable lawn seed to overseed while I pull up the roots.
The young rat was very much interested in the bucket pond (Home Depot bucket buried and partially filled with river rock) and a planter pond. (Same deal but a large planter.)
The house finches are around in the mornings and afternoons. They're focused heavily on the radish pods from the ones that went to seed. They were avoiding one of the bird baths with a large rock in it, so I took it out. Hopefully they'll be ok with that in the future. The pole beans are looking healthier and the calendula around them should 1. act as a trap crop and 2. help deter crows from digging around in the mulch.
The moonflower seedling is coming along well but I need to remember to take it out of the greenhouse before tomorrow afternoon. I want to keep it on the deck I think, it would be nice to look out and see it bloom at night. That is if it blooming at night is true, I have a four o'clock flower that's pretty much all day.
The creeping buttercup is extremely bad this year. I didn't have a lot of energy to tackle it last season. Spraying the vinegar kills off the foliage and flowers which should weaken it. Then pull, then smother, then plant something on top.
The elderberry seems to have stopped or slowed growing and is flowering as of this week.
Garden Diaries
Female finch on the bolted radishes. It's raining.
6/6/2026 - Gray rat (probably a Norway rat) running next to the shed. Small-ish crow hopping around between the beds. House finch poking around under the Elderberry tree. Some signs of pole been seedlings. Peas finally doing something, it seemed to take a minute this year.
6/5/2026 - Sprayed 24% vinegar solution on creeping buttercup. Some signs of marigolds and other flowers blooming. Nothing from the balloon vine and moonflower yet. Trained the marionberry vines on the new arbor. I think I might have seriously damaged the insect population with the vinegar or just removed a hiding place.

Hey so as the economy continues to get worse in the next few years, gambling companies are going to go extra hardcore predatory as people become more desperate. Yes, even more than they already are. You have to promise me right now you're not going to fall for it. No gambling, okay?
This is going to be especially bad with prediction markets and sports gambling, and it's already really fucking bad. But it also goes for loot boxes, blind box collectables, trading card games, and ESPECIALLY gacha games.
THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS
GAMBLING IS NEVER PROFITABLE

I am half Scottish and half Japanese- I hand-sewed this kimono from men’s dress shirts and boxer shorts.
This kinda stuff is actually really inspirational to those of us with uncommonly mixed heritage, regardless of if you’re this particular mix just seeing other mixed people make their backgrounds their own instead of being forced to choose is so important for mixed children growing up tbh

This is solarpunk AF.
Best part (IMO) is that it actually makes sense from a historical standpoint. In feudal Japan, each clan would have a mon (an emblem sort of like a coat of arms) that would be displayed on banners and used to identify that particular clan. Members of a clan would often have their mon displayed on their clothing including kimonos, like so:
Thus, the idea of a kimono in a clan tartan pattern is in fact completely appropriate and would be perfectly familiar to feudal Japanese culture.
And also it looks really cool.
This weekend, Maya Caulfield posted to photos of herself modeling a kimono she sewed by hand, and her work earned her thousands of instant a

LA is so funny cause wym i just stopped at Chipotle and accidentally had a conversation with the producer of Van Helsing 2004 and got to tell him that im clinically obsessed with that movie and he was like “i’ll text the director that right now he’ll love that”
i think a lot of you guys are vastly overestimating the celebrity status of a 65 year old editor producer of a 2004 movie who was picking up his own Chipotle in cargo shorts
i can’t believe i was in a bad mood before this
And they DID IT at his birthday dinner ….
see i haven't watched the show but i thought i'd mete out the WIPs and final piece of this
