I got another spam comment today on AO3, and I want to share it as a PSA. But before I do, I want you to understand that you SHOULD NOT DO what this comment is asking. Ok? Ok.
See that bit at the bottom? Don't do that. Insert ParamedicGuy.gif going "Don't."
Other malicious spam comments I've gotten seemed designed to make an author question their writing, or outright encourage them to delete their stories from AO3. This one is different, in that it tries to get you to destroy the work on your own computer.
If you ran that command, it basically locates your Documents folder, then deletes everything in it, including all subfolders. It also does it without any prompt, so you have no chance to second guess your actions.
This is just fucking trolling.
Coincidentally, we just did training on a cyberattack similar to this, called a ClickFix attack. You can read about how that works here.
As a general rule, if ANYONE or ANY WEBSITE tells you unsolicited* to do anything in Powershell, CMD RUN, command prompt, shell command, or something similar, DON'T.
*There are legit reasons for running commands in PowerShell or the command prompt, but in those cases you are likely seeking out a solution to a problem you are already experiencing. Don't just run random commands on your computer as recommended by some unlogged-in guest on a fan fiction site.
Always think and consider before taking action, and get a second opinion from a trusted source. When I got this comment I was pretty sure what the command would do, and it took me about three seconds of googling to confirm it.
Be safe out there!
i’m always thinking about that news story where a three year old boy who wandered away from his house and ended up in the middle of the woods was found by this local great pyrenees farm dog who herded the kid back to his unrelated owners house. and the guy was like. whose kid is this
that dog must have been like. hmm. this isn’t a goat. some human must have left their puppy behind by accident. i have to bring this to management. surely my owner will be able to sort out whatever has occurred. that kid was like i’m all alone and scared and omg a big fluffy puppy is here to help. and that fucking farmer looking at his dog like. who’s toddler did you steal???
this post is gaining traction so i’m adding the article and my favorite part of it. also the dogs name is buford….
The two-year-old boy had wandered away from home on Monday evening and spent the night alone nearly seven miles from his home.

It’s sooooooo funny getting into Rebels having read the Thrawn books first. Because Rebels sets Thrawn up as like, a Big Bad Scary Guy. He’s got dramatic organ music. He’s hissing at people. He’s a Machiavellian supervillain. He’s a bad dude! Unfortunately he is ALSO the same motherfucker I just saw simping for Eli Vanto for 200 pages straight
It’s like if you watched a rom com where Hans Gruber from Die Hard has a really intense homoerotic thing with his twink cowboy college roommate culminating in him gifting said roommate his gay thoughts diary before inviting him to go live in his childhood home. And then you watched Die Hard.

I'm so glad to see AO3 making it absolutely clear that none of these things are allowed to even be HINTED at.
Here's some of the language from the new post about AO3's police on commercial promotion:
-
There is a wide variety of things that are not allowed under AO3's non-commercialization rules.
Any other language which one might interpret as requesting or having requested financial contributions, whether for yourself or others. This covers indirect references, euphemisms, or other language intended to get around the TOS. Some examples of this include:

#as writers we CANNOT make any money off of our fic#we could endanger our entire ecosystem of authors#does no one remember the Anne Rice stuff#we do our work out of passion and for free. if you want to make money off of your writing DONT WRITE FANFICTION <- prev
Alas, I'm fairly sure a lot of the people whining about not being able to force capitalism into their hobby probably weren't born yet when Anne Rice was sending lawyers after and doxxing fanwriters for violating her copyright. *takes a heavy drink of water like it's bourbon* I feel old.
AO3's structure is of a nonprofit, noncommercial library of fair use transformative works. it is not a market or vendor space, and so they cannot allow commercial works to be hosted there.
if you WANT to make money off of your fanfiction, you can assume the legal liability for doing so on another site, such as wattpad, patreon, etsy, bluesky, facebook, etc. they are different sites that aren't nonprofit archives of fair use transformative works, and they have different regulations.
they also will not protect you from any legal actions against you.
AO3 has lawyers, which protect their users and their archive from copyright claims, specifically under fair use laws that guarantee that because none of the works had been made for money, none of the works could be prosecuted as copyright infringement, since they weren't competitive with the source material's owners.
you can't have your cake and fuck it, too. you can't use AO3's structure in ways that specifically endanger AO3's explicit mission, terms of service, and operating parameters.
either you follow the rules, or you go somewhere with different rules, or you break the rules and get kicked out when you're caught.

sinking town
has anyone figured out how to be a real person yet
just me. and i'm NOT telling
what the fuck. come on
good smut is really a character study and that is final. i need it to be about vulnerability i need it to be about trust or lack thereof and most of all i need it to be emotional agony. thats what sex is for
You can and should write fanfiction that isn't perfect. You can and should write whatever fanfiction you want. You can and should write fanfiction that brings you joy even if it's silly or goofy or weird.
Except for me. My fanfic has to be perfect and read like a novel and ruin at least one person's sleep schedule.
What to Give a Sh*t About While Brainstorming Your Book
(A.K.A. Before You Even Touch That Shiny Blank Page)
↳ What You’re Actually Obsessed With Stop trying to write what’s trendy. What do you spiral about at 2 a.m.? What ideas make you grin like a gremlin and mutter, “Ohhh, that’s juicy”? That’s your story. Chase that weird, niche, can’t-let-it-go stuff. Your obsession will be the fuel that drags you through chapter 27 when everything sucks and you kind of want to fake your own death.
↳ Your Story’s “Why the Hell Should Anyone Care?” Not in a mean way. But genuinely—why should a stranger give up sleep to read this? What itch does it scratch? What feeling does it deliver? Figure that out early and let it guide you like a tiny emotional compass. If you can’t answer it yet, cool. But keep poking at it until you can.
↳ A Character With Big, Messy Feelings Don’t start with a plot. Start with a person. A disaster with a wound and a want. Someone who wants something so badly it makes them do unwise things. Get to know them like a nosy therapist. Let them tell you what kind of story they want to be in.
↳ Conflict That Isn’t Just Vibes Mood boards are fun. But conflict is what makes a story move. Make sure you’ve got some stakes, emotional, relational, existential, literal. If your idea doesn’t have anything to push against, it’s not a story yet. It’s an inspiration board.
↳ A Rough Emotional Shape Not an outline. Not yet. Just… the feeling. Where does it start (lonely)? Where does it go (rage)? Where does it end (hopeful)? Think of your book like a rollercoaster. You need the high points, low points, and those slow creaky climbs that make people scream. If it’s all flat? Snoozefest.
↳ The One Vibe You Want to Nail Every great book has a thing. An atmosphere. A flavor. Your job during brainstorming is to catch the scent of it. Is it spooky and tender? Funny and tragic? Cozy but secretly brutal? Whatever it is, write it down. Tattoo it on your brain. Let it infect every scene.
↳ Something You’re Scared to Write About You don’t have to go here. But if something in your gut says, “Oh god, I could never write about that”… maybe poke it. Maybe there’s gold in there. Maybe the story wants to heal something. You don’t have to bleed for your art—but if it makes you uncomfortable in a thrilling way? That’s your fire.

Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!
Heads up that this is a very extensive questionnaire and might be daunting to a lot of writers (myself included). That being said, it is also an amazing questionnaire and I will definitely be using it (or at the very least, some of it).

i actually need to know people's thoughts on this because at least in my experience the answer to this has drastically changed since i was on tumblr in the 2010s and its driving me fucking insane
what's the appropriate way to engage with a fandom take you disagree with on tumblr?
voice your disagreement in the replies
voice your disagreement in a reblog addition
shrug and move on
vaguepost and complain about it on your own blog but dont engage directly
send it to a trusted moot and vent about your frustrations about it in private
bald / nuance / see results
*im talking about fandom takes specifically. not someone being horribly evil about a real-life issue or or blatantly factually incorrect. literally just harmless fandom disagreements or differing interpretations of a text/character/etc.
i need you dorks to REBLOG this if you voted.... i already know my circle of moots and i have the same opinion i need this to spread across fandoms to get a real accurate sample of sufficient size COME ON!!!!!! and love and kisses to everyone reblogging and leaving their thoughts in the tags <3 muah muah xoxo
I generally shrug and move on, but I do have a small handful of trusted people I will bitch to.
