Lavender, book 1 is available now from Amazon! USĀ - UK
Kindle not required!
This has been a long time coming. I started writing Lavender in October, 2011, whilst taking a break from another book that was giving me grief. This was an idea that came out of nowhere, the sort that wasnāt going to leave me alone until I caved in and wrote it. So I allowed myself a chapter.Ā
Inevitably, more followed, and Iām very glad they did. Now here, in August 2015, the journey from that evening is⦠Well. Itās finished. Book 1 is done.Itās over. Itās out. So why should you read it?
Lavender knows what her family expects of her. She just doesnāt know how to avoid it. All her life, Lavender has wandered the forest outside her home, climbing its tall and ancient trees and following its brooks. Yet now her father has betrothed her to a boy in her village: Erkin, son of the village Elder. For Lavender, who hates being stuck indoors, has no knack for cooking, and would far rather be exploring the high branches of the forest, marriage is a fate worse than death. But fate is rarely so simple, and a chance argument reveals a secret at the heart of the forest that could change everything she thought possible. Sometimes, friends can spring from the most unlikely places, and the biggest fears and the greatest evils donāt need to come at the point of a sword. For Lavender, the struggle to make her own path has only begun.
For as long as Iāve been reading fantasy literature, Iāve wanted novels that donāt involve special destinies. Donāt involve characters with superpowers or hidden magic talent - or even, necessarily, any magic at all. Make no mistake, I enjoy those books tremendously, but I wanted to write something a little different. I wanted to get into the head of one specific girl, and explore her desires, her wants, her loves and her deepest fears in a society that doesnāt have any time for them. With Lavender, I think Iāve succeeded in crafting an intimate, psychological work, blending something genuine and emotional with a (generous) dash of the fantastical. There are no worlds saved in this book. No prophecy to fulfil. There are relationships. Friendships that donāt come easily, that time has faded or pressure worn. There is adventure and danger too, set in a world with plenty to be discovered, and mysteries of its own.
Iām the author, of course, so Iām bound to say this. Thatās why you can read the first 3 chapters of the book (in an admittedly earlier form hereĀ )Ā or use amazonās look inside tool, if youād rather. Iām confident that if you take a look, youāll see why Iām so enthusiastic for this book! If you have any questions about it, Iād be happy to try and answer them.
A reminder that this happened in the wee hours of the morning!

Itās my pleasure to announce that Lavender, my first novel, is available for preordering from Amazon! Ā (If itās fiddly, just give it time. It can take a while for a book to be availble across all of Amazonās various sites, and To Clarify: You donāt need a kindle to buy or read from amazon! They have an app thatāll work on most everything.) Iām hugely excited for this, and Iāve been eager to show it off to you for sometime. If youāll permit me a blurb...

Lavender is - blurbās over, by the way, and the rest of this post is largely recycled from an earlier one - Lavender is aĀ very low magic - yet quite fantastical - fantasy novel about a young girl by the name of Lavender. At the start of our tale, she discovers that despite all the attempts sheās made to appear as unmarriagable as possible, her father has betrothed her to the son of the village elder. Itās a story about growing up; about discovery, bravery, adventure and heartache. I hope itās a story for you.
If you need further convincing, then you can find the first 3 chapters ofĀ Lavender here! Iāll also be taking a little more time in this post to cover some details. So, Iāve already said that itās low magic. What does that mean? Bluntly speaking, thereās no spells. No dragons. The world more or less operates as youād expect.Well. More or less.
What else? Well, this isnāt quite Young Adult. Nor is it not YA. With Lavender, Iāve tried to craft a story that doesnāt care how old you are. That wonāt patronise younger readers or use its younger cast to dodge difficult questions and situations. On the contrary, I think the younger cast lets me dive in with both feet. Iāve felt the category of YA is increasingly nebulous, and whilst thereās much in the way of YA fiction I adore, I find myself not quite sure what it is in order to assuredly categorise my book as such. Regardless, if youāre the sort of person who usually spurns child protagonists, then try the sample chapters. I hope to convince you otherwise.
More than that, I am a proudly feminist author. Thereās women in my books, and lots of them. Iāve toyed with saying this outright. Thereās a concern that by even squeezing it into this little mini-FAQ Iām constructing that such a declaration will give the impression that by reading Lavender youāre opting in to a morality tale. Instead, what Iād like to say is this. If youāre bored with fantasy as swords for boys. If you read blurbs just hoping for a book with an interestingĀ fantasy premise that doesnāt give the title role to the gruff guy with the shaggy black hair and the stubble and the destiny, then Iāve got a book for you.

Cucumber quest fic, take 2!
So, It was Gigidigiās birthday a while back, and I wanted to write some really... terrible nightmare_child level fic. Long story short, I couldnāt do it justice. So Iāve tried a different approach, and it sort of yielded this. I hope Iāve written something thatās hopelessly self indulgent, and also sincere.

Dragonoak is a high-fantasy, low-magic trilogy, and the first book, The Complete History of Kastelir, is out now!
Follow the story of Rowan Northwood, a necromancer who runs away with a passing Knight after months of being ostracised by her village. Sir Ightham takes Rowan along grudgingly, but has her reasons for doing so. Not that itās easy to get much more than a few words out of the woman.
What begins at a desperate attempt to find a better life quickly becomes something much more troublingābut in all fairness, Rowan never asked whether Sir Ightham was in exile or not.
Dragonoak takes place in a fantasy world without the limitations of the real world. The majority of the cast are queer women of all kinds, spread throughout all levels of society. Itās a story free of sexual violence, that still delves into issues like PTSD, depression and addiction. Being queer is entirely incidental; this very much isnāt a coming out story.

I had the good fortune to be amongst the first people to read this book, and what can I say? Thereās not many books where sometimes I just sit around thinking about how cool certain character developments - or just characters, top to bottom - are. Beyond my own writing, itās probably the book series Iāve thought more about than any other! Itās good. It scratches an itch for fast paced, well written queer fantasy, with larger than life characters, a great, world travelling plot, and tons of fun stuff to see and explore. Itās a good time, you should have it.
I should also add, if anybody has any questions about Lavender or the world sheās in, I have an askbox :) No guarantees I wonāt be evasive, though. I mean the bookās not even out. Dang.
Itās been a while.
truncated for brevity
Hell yeah, please look forward to being able to read this super good story!!!
Also Lavenderās a great character so hereās a doodle to celebrate the upcoming release
Perfect.
Itās been a while.
It had to happen sooner or later, and Iām thrilled to announce that my first novel, Lavender, is going to be on sale very soon! Iām looking to be publishing via amazon and other outlets, at a price of about Ā£4, or the equivalent in what your local currency might be. Iāve been working on this series of books for many years now, and though I actually finished Lavender a while back, I havenāt been in a position to actually sell it until now! Very excited, as you might expect.
Ā For those of you who arenāt yet aware, Lavender is a very low magic - yet quite fantastical - fantasy novel about a young girl by the name of Lavender. But fate is rarely so simple, and a chance argument reveals a secret at the heart of the forest that could change everything she thought possible.
Ā Lavender is a story about friendship in unlikely places. Itās a story about growing up; about discovery, bravery, adventure and heartache. A story that acknowledges that sometimes our biggest fears and greatest evils donāt need to come at the point of a sword. Ultimately, itās a story about a young girl named Lavender, and her struggle to choose her own path.
Ā I hope itās a story for you.
If you need further convincing, then you can find the first 3 chapters of LavenderĀ hereĀ , and Iāll be talking more about it, and a couple of the characters within it, in the run up to release! Iāll also be taking a little more time in this post to cover some details.

Yes. You need this book. The fantasy genre needs this book. Itās got cool knights! Itās got a super cool take on necromancy! It has a great world, ripe for exploring, with cities and cultures and histories vividly depicted! it does fantasy without just using it as a crutch to import real world prejudices! Yeah! And the protagonist is proper lovely. Itās a good time, and you should treat yourself to it.
