Even before Mia arrived, Asia was devastated by her approach. Every stroke as she moved through the waves provoked unimaginably massive waves that swamped cities and drowned nations. Hawaii and most of the Pacific islands were lost. And with every bit of forward momentum, Mia became bigger and bigger at an even faster rate.

If you were asked to name the greatest disaster in Japanese history, you might say Hiroshima and Nagasaki or a tsunami. Maybe an earthquake. Godzilla, if you were trying to be funny. None of them compared to Mia’s foot. The effects of the Growthium inside her were only accelerating with time, her body expanding to the point that even the tallest mountains on Earth were too small for her to see as anything other than grew and white smudges far below. She had almost no chance of making out individual peaks unless she squinted.

Mount Fuji, like the rest of the Japanese archipelago and much of mainland Asia, were instantly obliterated as Mia’s feet landed. It was the greatest calamity in human history, billions perished in that single moment, and the world was forever irrevocably altered, the earthquake her footsteps produced was larger than anything in recorded history. Many of the world’s largest cities simply cease to be, entire nations were wiped off the map. By now, Mia was so huge and her mass so immense that simply by standing on the surface of the planet she broke through the crust, exposing the magma within.

As that magma became lava, it dramatically warmed the atmosphere. Where it met water at sea, the oceans boiled. The world superheated. Glaciers, already perilously close to collapse due to climate change, stood little chance. They melted, rising global sea levels even as water rushed to fill the vast holes in the surface created by Mia’s feet. Tens of millions more drowned.

Humanity was done for, and Mia was done with Earth. There was nothing for her here now, and it wouldn’t be long before she outgrew the planet entirely. She looked towards the stars and pushed herself off the planet; much of her body was already outside the confines of the atmosphere in any case. The act of launching herself into space resulted in the planet’s final reckoning. The entire world shuddered and broke apart into a thousand pieces. Mia watched the destruction unfold and its aftermath for a brief, disinterested moment before turning her gaze towards the cosmos at large. She thought she might have felt something, some twinge of regret for what she had done, but Mia felt nothing at all. If the Earth hadn’t wanted to be destroyed, it shouldn’t have been so puny and breakable.

Massive Madison’s Musical Momentum – Part Six

Madison’s foot came down and an enormous factory was demolished in an instant, its total surface area as small as an insect compared to the titan who had just demolished it. The factory had been at the cutting edge of innovation in the medical and pharmaceutical industries for decades, curing diseases and easing the suffering of billions all while making hundreds of billions in the process. Its latest innovation was perhaps something of a departure for the multinational conglomerate that owned the factory, but it was nevertheless expected to open up a potentially very lucrative new revenue stream for the company. The product had been called Growtherall.

The impossibly vast singer had no idea she had just destroyed the facility that had created the drug that had fuelled her growth. She didn’t even truly register that she had grown. All that mattered to her was that she continued to promote her new album and that was what she did, no matter the consequences for those on the ground beneath her. “Stream my new album now!” she called out, voice carrying for hundreds of miles now.

She had already been attacked by conventional weapons. None of them had so much as left her with as a bruise. Now, desperate times called for desperate measures. From underground silos and submarines at sea, ICBMs and tactical nuclear warheads were launched towards Madison. She was engulfed in atomic fire, mushroom clouds engulfing her enormous body. For a moment, there was stillness and then the illusion of hope was shattered as the words “Buy Locket!” cut through the inferno.

Thomas groaned. He had been the CEO of the company whose factory had made Growtherall and the longer this went on, the worse he knew it would be for him and whatever was left of the company. Legal proceedings, congressional hearings, shareholder revolts. On the other hand… how much of the world would be left when Madison finally stopped ‘promoting’ her album. The factory was gone; the physical evidence was gone. Emails could be deleted. Congressmen paid off. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

“Another martini,” he ordered. The man behind the bar prepared one and gave it to him without comment. The resort was quiet; he’d booked the whole place out for a corporate retreat before this disaster had started to unfold. Only a handful of other staff had made it. Well, they were clearly the most dedicated. Maybe he’d have HR organise a pizza party or something for them when they got back. If they got back.

His phone buzzed. It was the president. Again. Thomas ignored it.

Massive Mia’s Meteoric Moment – Part Three

Growthium did more than just make Mia grow. It gave her strength beyond what her size should have allowed. The element was in many ways the opposite of Kryptonite for humans. Mia embodied power at a level no other human ever had. With every step, the world shook beneath her. Buildings toppled. Lives ended. The Earth itself bore the scars of her progress, her feet leaving deep ruts in the surface.

But more than that, Mia drew delight from her apparent invulnerability. She had long lost track of the number of bombs and missiles she had been attacked with. None of them from simple munitions to nuclear warheads had made the slightest bit of difference to Mia, much less slowed her down. She arrived in San Francisco and gazed down at the City by the Bay with contempt. The tallest building in the metropolis, the Transamerica Pyramid, didn’t even reach past her ankle.

Mia had seen San Francisco so many times in so many movies and TV shows. It was always somewhere she had wished to visit but she had never expected to do so in such a dramatic fashion. From her vantage point high above, she could see the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, she could see the tiny structures of Alcatraz, she could just about make out the iconic structures along the waterfront around Fisherman’s Wharf. Lombard Street with its pretty flowers and winding road should be around here somewhere. Maybe she was too big to see it. Maybe she’d already crushed it.

The sight of San Francisco, for all that she had once desired to visit it, provoked no great interest in Mia now and certainly no sympathy. It was just another tiny city at her feet, much like any other. The colossal New Zealander pressed her foot forward. Hundreds of buildings collapsed, with even more following when she swept her sole from left to right across the ruins of the city.

Most of the people who lived there had already evacuated but Mia was getting bigger all the time and that meant she was able to traverse more ground quickly. The next city might not be so lucky. No one wanted to think of what would happen if she grew much larger than she was already.

“Pathetic,” she murmured, though even speaking softly, her words provoked gale force winds and echoed across the bay to Oakland and beyond. There was very little in this world that could still fascinate Mia, it seemed. She had simply outgrown humanity’s ability to impress her with their skyscrapers and their historical monuments. “And they say everything is bigger in America…”

A tear rolled down Kayla’s cheek as she watched the footage on the TV in front of her. “You’re going to be fine, dad,” she told her elderly father. “You’re going to make it through this. We all will. And when this… this nightmare is finished, we’ll go out to the lake house for a whole month, just you, me, and Max. He’ll love spending time with his favourite grandpa.”

The impossibly vast pop star was getting closer to Andrew’s house, to the house Kayla had grown up in. Her father was alone now, her mother in a care home. He couldn’t drive; his vision was failing him, and by now, the rate of the giantess’s expansion was outgrowing the speed and effectiveness of any evacuation procedures. People were still trying to flee, of course. There were scenes of bedlam at airports, ferry terminals, and highways all over the internet. Many major roads and their arteries were clogged, with multiple vehicles abandoned when it became clear that, for some at least, they’d be faster fleeing on foot.

“That sounds nice,” Andrew said, sounding resigned more than anything. That broke Kayla’s heart. “We’ll go to that pizza place on the waterfront, um…”

“Malone’s,” she supplied, “Joe Malone’s. He always liked you, dad.”

“That’s right, yeah. We had some good times there.” There was a loud smash and the line went dead. Kayla screamed. On TV, Madison was shown to have sat down on the city. It was impossible to tell if Andrew’s house had been flattened but if it hadn’t, it would be a miracle.

“Buy Locket!” Madison called out. Even in her own home, dozens of miles away in the other direction, Kayla could hear her. She shuddered, feeling a chill in her bones. This couldn’t be how the world ended. She wouldn’t have enjoyed a pandemic or a nuclear war or climate catastrophe but she could have understood them, at least. This was something else, something inexplicable, and Kayla was no closer to understanding it now than she had been when she’d seen the first images of the growing singer grabbing a bus when she’d still been much smaller than what she was now. Those images felt like a lifetime ago.

“I’m scared, mommy,” Max said from the doorway. She hadn’t heard him open the door.

Turning to her son, she approached and lowered herself to his level. “I’m scared too, sweetie. But we’re going to be okay, because we’re a family, and family can do anything.”

“Stream my new album now!” the pop star demanded.

Kayla took a deep breath to steady herself. “Why don’t you, um, you go and get some ice cream?” she offered.

“But I haven’t eated my vege-vege… tables,” Max replied.

Kayla laughed in spite of everything. She had a good kid. The best in the world. “I’ll allow it, just this once.”

Massive Mia’s Meteoric Moment – Part Two

The Growthium was inside Mia’s bloodstream now. More than that, it was beginning to fuse with and change her molecular structure. Her DNA started to shift and adapt. Never before had any living creature from Earth encountered Growthium, never had anything in the history of the universe reacted so strongly.

In just a few steps, Mia’s body had gone from a dozen feet to hundreds. There were screams up and down the beach as her steps kicked up vast amounts of sand. Many people ran, those further away filmed and recorded her growth. A moment ago, she had felt vulnerable with so many people watching. Now, she felt emboldened. These people were barely ants to her already, and it had only been a few moments. Mia couldn’t say how she knew, but she had a strong feeling that her growth was far from over. This was only the beginning.

Her foot descended again, no longer on the soft sand of the beach but on hard concrete. Barefoot, she should have felt resistance, pain even. But the ground beneath her broke away, crumbled. Instead of the discomfort one experiences when you walk barefoot on hard ground, she felt nothing but raw strength and power.

A car swerved on the road and Mia flicked her foot sideways, smashing it and its occupant. There was no hesitation before and no remorse after. Instead, Mia bit her lip as she considered her new place in the world, her position atop the food chain. She still didn’t know what had happened to her or how, but the growing giantess was oddly calm about that. How she had come to be this big mattered less than what she was going to do with her size now that she was.

The simple truth was, Mia felt good. Better than she could remember being in a very long time. Growth suited her, growth made her feel like everything was the way it should be, that this was her destiny. There was a hotel across the road, she pressed her foot forward and watched with satisfaction as the structure began to crumble and collapsed with barely any pressure applied. Soon, a cloud of dust and a pile of debris were all that remained of the building.

Mia turned and began to walk along the sea front, casually stomping on everything that crossed her path. A tour bus frantically tried to turn around, but she raced forward, the ground shaking at her feet. The driver jumped out before she closed her fingers around the vehicle, but the other passengers weren’t so lucky. The titan lifted the bus up high and smirked at the tiny ants on board. Many of the windows had shattered, and the metal of the structure had partially caved in. Mia didn’t leave them to suffer long, at least. She tossed the bus and watched it sail through the air before landing with a thud on top of the first police cars racing towards her.

Simon woke up alone and in a strange place. Sitting up slowly, looking at the monitors he was strapped to, it became apparent he was in a hospital. He frowned and called out; no one answered. At the end of the bed, he found his chart and read it. A coma. For nearly a decade now. He called out again, still there was no answer. Simon disconnected himself from the machines and gingerly put his feet on the ground. He knew he’d be unsteady on his feet, that it would take him time to recover his strength. Using the wall for support, he gingerly began to walk towards the door. His fingers were still, and it took a few attempts to open the door. In the corridor outside, there was no one.

At first, Simon thought he’d woken up in a 28 Days Later situation. When he got to the reception room and saw the TV, he wasn’t sure if zombies were more or less believable than what was actually happening. It was clear, though, that in the rush to evacuate the hospital, he’d been overlooked.

Madison took another step, as calamitous as the last. A dozen buildings toppled instantly as her foot came down while the surrounding structures were damaged, many beyond repair. The road collapsed beneath her, water from the pipes beneath her began to spill out on the street as mains burst. A cloud of dangerous, cancer-carrying dust particles spread out beneath the titan. None of this registered with Madison, none of it made the slightest bit of difference. She was laser-focused on her mission.

“My new album is out now!” she declared. The whole world knew about the album by now, Madison’s growth and the destruction it provoked was getting 24-hour news coverage on every channel and was the most discussed topic on every social media site. It was the only thing anyone was talking about.

Perversely, sales and streams of Locket had skyrocketed beyond all expectations her record label had ever set. Interest was so high that several streaming services crashed. “Stream my album now!” Madison demanded of the world at large as she advanced, the ground shaking with earthquake-like ferocity.

Using a crutch he’d found abandoned for support, Simon made it outside and saw a world that looked like a warzone. The skyline of the city lay in ruins, its tallest structures reduced to rubble as the giantess marched forth, beseeching the world to “Buy Locket!”. He craned his neck up and up to look at her, looming large over the world and getting closer.

He hadn’t just woken up from a coma after a decade just to die under the shoe of a woman whom nobody had even heard of when he’d first slipped into his deep slumber. Walking as fast as he could in the circumstances, he made his way out of the car park. The ground behind him shook violently, and Simon would have fallen if not for an ambulance he was able to grab onto.

Massive Mia’s Meteoric Moment – Part One

Around 48.5 tons of meteoritic material falls on Earth every single day. The world, for all that humanity has spread across the surface, is still mostly ocean or desert or mountains. Incidents of buildings or people being hit are therefore vanishingly rare.

An American woman, Ann Elizabeth Fowler Hodges, was taking a nap on Tuesday, November 30th, 1954, when a fragment of rock broke through the roof of her house in Sylacauga, Alabama, leaving a three-foot-wide hole before bouncing off a radio, and hitting her leg and hand. She was the first and only known human to survive a direct hit from a meteor.

72 years later, New Zealander Mia Paranihi decided to go for a swim before lunch. It was a warm, sunny day though the sea breeze diminished the heat somewhat. There was nothing to suggest anything out of the ordinary was about to happen. As she dived beneath the waves, a shard of meteorite descended from the cosmos. Like most meteors, it came from an asteroid, and also like most meteors, a majority of it burnt up in the atmosphere.

But not all.

A tiny shard of that meteor continued to descend towards the Earth. It was enough. The meteor landed in the water. There was a splash. It was so slight that no one noticed. The water rapidly cooled the shard; maybe that was what saved Mia’s life as she swam back up to the surface. She gasped as she felt something hot brush against her thigh. There was a moment of searing pain before she emerged on the surface, gasping. She thought she might have been stung by a jellyfish; her first thought was definitely not that she’d been hit by a meteor.

Mia swam towards the shore.

As she moved closer to dry land, her body began to grow. She didn’t even feel the contortions happening as she reached the beach but the shard of the meteor that had hit her had come from no ordinary asteroid. The asteroid was made of one of the rarest elements in the universe, one that the scientists of Earth didn’t even have a space on the periodic table for. For those advanced alien races that did know of its existence, the element was called Growthium. Usually anyone or anything exposed to Growthium expanded to about twice their normal height, but no human had ever encountered the strange material before. And as it turned out, human biology was particularly susceptible to the explosive effects of Growthium.

Right now, Mia didn’t know any of this. She reached the beach and inspected her leg. There was no sign of a wound or cut. Nothing to explain the sharp, searing pain she’d felt in the water. She looked around and frowned. It seemed like everything had gotten smaller when she was swimming, or she had gotten bigger.

Kara should have left an hour ago, the evacuation order was clear, anyone who stayed behind would be on their own. All attempts to stop Madison Beer from rampaging through the city had met with failure. No one knew what to do or how she had grown as much as she had or if they did, they weren’t saying.

Even now, she could feel the ground shaking beneath her feet. The building had been constructed to withstand low level tremors, no one had expected a goddamn giantess to show up. Madison took another step, the window in Kara’s apartment cracked, threatening to break. But still, Kara stayed behind, frantically searching for the locket (ironically enough) her mother had given to her. It was the only thing she had left of the woman who had brought her into the world and now she couldn’t find it.

The apartment looked like it had been ransacked by thieves. Her wardrobe and drawers lay open, their contents spilled out over the floor. She had similarly rummaged through the presses in the kitchen to no avail. Now, she had her hand down the back of the couch. There was no reason for her mother’s locket to be there, but she had to be sure.

“Buy Locket!” Madison called from outside, the words so loud and so close now that Kara winced. Her fingers moved along the lining of the couch and felt something metallic. She pulled it out and gasped. There it was, slightly scratched but otherwise exactly as it had been the day her mother died. Kara’s elation was short-lived.

A loud, sharp snapping sound filled the room as Kara’s apartment violently shook. The whole building was torn from its foundations and lifted up. She yelped as the building was tilted to one side. Kara landed hard on the ground and winced. Outside, Madison’s colossal face peered in and Kara could see every pore and spot. She clutched her mother’s locket tight to her chest and prayed, whether it was to God or her mom or something else entirely, she didn’t know, but she prayed all the same.

“Stream my new album now!” Madison called out. Finally, the window of her apartment shattered, and the room was filled with shards of glass, a few cut Kara’s face and arms. She yelped as the titan began to lower the building again, placing it on the ground with surprising gentleness before standing back up again and stomping away. “My album is out now!” Madison said, her footsteps fading as she walked.

Kara lay there for a long moment, unmoving. There was nothing physically broken, but it took a while for the shock to fade. When she finally did stand up and made her way to the window as she tried to figure out how to get out of the building, there were jets streaming past overhead towards Madison, who was several miles away by now but even taller still.

The Agency: Multi-size Operatives

“I just don’t think it’s fair,” Miranda pouted as she and Hailee stood in the transportation room in The Agency as a technician booted up the portal that would deliver them to their target: the city of Bergen, Norway on Earth 0245144-3J.

“Deputy Director Swift’s idea, apparently,” Hailee shrugged, “and the Director signed off on it. If it’s not us, it’s going to be someone else.”

“That’s fine, I get that,” Miranda told her, “I just mean, why do I have to be the small one?”

Hailee’s answer was cut off when the technician booted up the portal. “You’re clear to go,” she told them. With that, they stepped through and were whisked to the doomed city on the fjord.

A giantess, if she was big enough, could stomp out a city in a single step. She could destroy a planet by pinching it between her fingers. Plenty of Agency operatives had done so at one point or another, when they couldn’t be bothered to do anything more elaborate or simply hadn’t taken their time to savour the feeling of power that only being an operative in the field could bring.

The idea of multi-size agents, their respective heights locked in place before they left, was intended to test the efficiency of destructive techniques at different scales. Hailee would look at the big picture, Miranda would take care of things on a more intimate level. The problem, as far as Miranda was concerned, was that she liked being truly massive. She liked towering over a city, a country, a continent. Agency operatives had abilities in the field, effectively superpowers, but being big enough was a superpower all by itself. You didn’t need to shoot lasers from your eyes if you could sit down and destroy a nation.

There was nothing like raising a foot, its shadow plunging a metropolis of millions into darkness, and then destroying that city with nothing but a slight amount of pressure. Bergen, home to less than 300,000 people, and no skyscrapers, was barely worth the effort. But The Agency’s AI had determined a risk of systemic infection from an entropic breach in reality and it was their job to destroy it before the breach spread to other worlds and universes.

Hailee and Miranda appeared, their towering forms eclipsing the city and the mountains that surrounded it. “Well, Miranda,” Hailee prompted, “get to work. The city’s not going to destroy itself.” Her voice boomed. Windows in the city shattered and broke, people had to cover their ears, a few lost their sense of hearing entirely. Even at Miranda’s relatively large scale, the other woman’s words reverberated in her ears uncomfortably.

“What are you going to?” Miranda demanded.

Massive Madison’s Musical Momentum – Part Two

Luke was sitting on a bus on his way into work, ignoring the world around him. He had his headphones on and was listening to a podcast about unsolved murders. It wasn’t his usual cup of tea, but his girlfriend was fascinated by such things and after listening for a while, he had to admit, it actually wasn’t half bad. The driver slammed on the brakes and Luke was thrown forward, hitting the bar on the seat in front. He grunted and looked up.

“What the…” Luke blinked. The bus was rising off the ground and out the front window he could see enormous legs. To his right, a finger, thicker and taller than he was helping to lift the vehicle from the ground. After a few moments, the bus stopped moving. The face of an impossibly vast woman gazed through the front window.

“Buy Locket!” the giantess demanded, her voice booming. Luke had lost his headphones under the seats when he’d been bumped forward and winced. “Stream my album now!” Below, cars swerved around her feet, blasting their horns. There were angry yells. In the distance, there were sirens. On the bus, everyone gripped the bars and seats, terrified she would simply let the bus drop. “My new album is out now!”

Luke’s heart was beating rapidly in his chest; he forced himself to breathe. This was all just a bad dream. He’d wake up any second now back in bed, and the world would be normal again. The giantess lowered the bus, letting it go a few feet above the ground. Luke suffered some bruises and a cracked rib. There was a concussion or two. On the whole, everyone on board was lucky. Despite himself, as he lay on a trolley in the hospital waiting for his girlfriend to arrive, he streamed Locket, listening to it on the headphones he’d managed to recover before getting off the bus. He enjoyed it more than the podcast.

The TV on the wall of the hospital waiting room was showing the news and naturally, Madison was the biggest story going. The titan continued to walk through the city, at her feet cars were crushed, trees flattened, and roads cracked and broke beneath her weight. She didn’t even seem to notice she was massive and growing bigger. She didn’t seem to have any clue that this was unusual.

“Buy Locket!” she called out again, windows shattering around her. Dogs howled. Car alarms blared. Much of the city centre had been evacuated by now. The police had set up a cordon, and the army was starting to arrive on the scene. An official with a megaphone ordered Madison to stop. She ignored him and took another step. Shots were fired; the bullets bounced off her harmlessly. A tank rolled up and took a shot at Madison. “Stream my album now!” the pop star pleaded as her shoe came down and crushed the tank. It didn’t seem like a malicious act; she didn’t even seem to register that there had been a tank there at all.

Nothing a Woman Can’t Do

When Rachel said that Leah “would never amount to anything” it had hurt but it had also been years ago and Leah had almost forgotten (if never quite forgiven). It had been the culmination of a stupid argument over a man who hadn’t really been worthy of either of them. The two of them had gone on to lead very different lives and never crossed paths again after university. Leah became a model and an influencer before appearing on Love Island. She didn’t think of Rachel much at all and, with no contact and no mutual friends, never expected to have any reason to. 

Rachel graduated top of her year at university and went on to do a masters and a PHD. After intense training, she qualified as an astronaut. It was the proudest day of her life. If you had asked her if she remembered telling another girl she’d barely known that she wouldn’t achieve anything in her life, she would have said no, and she would not have been lying. After that whole sorry incident, she never thought about Leah again. 

Leah saw a story about Rachel heading up to the International Space Station online. She wasn’t usually one to read the news, especially about something that was so far removed from her lived experience; it might as well be happening to someone who lived on another planet. But something made her click on the link, and when she saw the name of the new astronaut, Rachel Lawson, Leah felt an anger and disappointment she had long thought extinguished bubbling up inside her. 

Rachel smiled for the cameras, answered the reporters’ questions, and made her way to the shuttle that would take her to the ISS. She strapped herself in, feeling a wave of satisfaction that was hard to express in words. This was the culmination of her life’s work, the pinnacle of everything she had been working towards, and nothing was going to take her achievements away from her. The countdown began, the engines roared to life, and the shuttle took off.

Leah checked to make sure. There was probably more than one Rachel Lawson out there, after all. But no, it was her. The same Rachel who had insulted and demeaned her all those years previously. Leah watched the launch on TV, wishing lasers would shoot out of her eyes, go through the screen, and blow it up. Rachel didn’t deserve this moment. Rachel deserved nothing. 

The news cut to an interview that had been recorded before the launch. “I’ve always lifted people up,” Rachel said. “It’s so important that women support each other, especially in male-dominated fields. There’s nothing we can’t do; I really believe that.” Leah only heard half of it as her last nerve frayed and snapped. She surged upwards, breaking through the ceiling of the room and growing larger and larger. 

Rachel’s shuttle docked with the ISS, and she boarded with the other crewmembers, excited to get to work when she happened to look out the window. “Are you… are you seeing this too?” she asked the others. They confirmed that they were. Rachel frowned; she knew that woman. It couldn’t be… it was, Leah... something from university.

Massive Madison’s Musical Momentum – Part One

“We really want to push this album as hard as we can and in as many ways as we can,” Addie from the record label told Madison. “So we’re going to have all the traditional marketing going on; merchandise, influencer promos, billboards, interviews we’ve got lined up.”

“I sense a ‘but’ coming,” Madison said as she reclined in the comfortable leather chair in the label’s headquarter office.

“But…” Addie chuckled, “we really feel like we can do more. That you can do more to help make this album stand out.”

“What do you have in mind?” Madison asked innocently.

That was when she was introduced to a new pill called Growtherall. It was new and experimental but had passed initial trials and was in the process of getting FDA approval. Addie told her that they wanted to get ahead of the competition, that Tate McRae, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and other pop stars and musicians were all either going to take Growtherall or had at least discussed the possibility with their own labels.

Madison asked a few questions, a rep from the pharmaceutical company that had developed Growtherall was linked in on a Zoom call to address her concerns around the safety of this new drug but in the end, curious to witness the effects of Growtherall herself and with the launch of her album, Locket, fast approaching, she agreed to try it.

A week later, Madison arrived at an old warehouse that had been divided into space for various startups and companies, including the marketing firm that had come up with the idea of using Growtherall to promote Locket. There was a photographer and film crew on hand to document her expansion. Madison smiled, posed for a few pictures before she grew, and picked up the tablets that had been left on a table for her.

Popping them into her mouth, she washed them down with a gulp of water and waited. “So when do I –”

Madison’s sentence died on her lips as her body began to shift, to change, to grow. Her limbs started to stretch, her torso expanded, her digits extended themselves, everything about her became bigger, became more. “That’s it,” Addie grinned. “It’s working!” Madison might have noticed Addie’s strong sense of relief, and questioned it, if not for her fascination with the changes happening to her own body.

Growtherall wasn’t just affecting Madison’s body, her mind was changing too. In just a few moments, she towered over everyone else in the room and smiled. “Buy Locket!” she called out, laser focused on the purpose behind her growth. “Stream my album now!”

Sleepwalking Size 

“Has anyone seen Tate?” Kyle asked quietly. “She’s not in her room.” 

“Uh. No, haven’t seen her,” April replied as she looked up from her tablet. It was late and others they were sharing the house with were asleep. April was insomniac, at least, and Kyle wasn’t too surprised to see her awake. 

“Figured as much, thanks,” Kyle replied, “she’s probably just getting a glass of water or something. See you at breakfast.” 

“Sure,” April nodded and turned her attention back to the tablet. Kyle went to the kitchen but was unsurprised to find it empty. He had already checked the bathroom. There was a chance she was in the garden, but he doubted it. Nevertheless, he had to be sure. Hastily putting on shoes, he headed outside and looked around, using the torch on his phone. The house was in a remote spot, that was part of the reason they’d chosen it, but with heavy cloud cover, there was no moonlight to guide his way. 

He could see his breath as he walked about but saw no sign of Tate. Quickly, he headed back inside and made his way to the bedroom. Kyle had had to be sure but now, he had no doubt about what Tate was doing, even if he didn’t know exactly where she was. Kyle slumped onto the bed and waited. At some point, he fell asleep, waking only when he felt movement in the bed next to him. 

Blinking, he checked the time. 4:02am. With a sigh, he cast his gaze to Tate’s soles, they were coated in earth and debris, the remnants of a tiny world she had stomped over while sleep walking. It wasn’t the first time it had happened and short of strapping her to the bed, Kyle couldn’t think of a way to prevent it from happening again. How she teleported herself to other universes with smaller Earths he didn’t know and neither did she. 

Despite that, he’d seen her rise from the bed, a portal opening before as if by magic, and a tiny city on the other side. He’d recorded it, shown her. At first she tried to say it was AI but they both knew the truth. When Tate sleepwalked, millions died. The first time he saw it, he frantically searched online, even checked cable news, only to discover nothing unexpected. The economy this, politics that. Nothing about a giantess crushing a major city. 

He tried to console himself by knowing that Tate wasn’t really in control of what she was doing, that lots of people sleepwalked and ended up in all kinds of bizarre situations. But the truth was, none of them were as bizarre as Tate’s. And he didn’t know who to turn to for help. Even with the video, it would probably just be dismissed as edited footage. 

Kyle didn’t know the people who died; he had never been to their Earths, and he didn’t know how close they were to the people of his own world, but they were people, and they were dying in numbers beyond counting. Glancing over at his sleeping girlfriend, it was hard to believe she was probably one of the greatest killers in history.

A Gigantic Gap in Memory 

The Roman custom of damnatio memoriae, meaning “condemnation of memory,” was the act of erasing someone from the historical record. Sometimes that meant scrubbing their name from documents or even large-scale alterations of official accounts. The practice continued into the Middle Ages. Go to the Doge’s Palace in Venice to this day, and you’ll find the portrait of Doge Marino Faliero has been covered with a black shroud with an inscription that translates “This is the space for Marino Faliero, beheaded for crimes” (an attempted coup). Similar processes occurred in China and the Maya civilization. In the United States Military Academy, a plaque dedicated to Benedict Arnold does not feature his name, and simply says “Major General. Born 1740.” 

The coming of the giantesses changed the world and brought with it its own peculiar form of damnatio memoriae. When someone was killed by a giantess; whether they were sat on, crushed underfoot, eaten, or otherwise brought to the end of their lives, they ceased to be not just in body and spirit but in time. Retroactively, reality changed so that they had never existed at all. 

Their relationships, their achievements, their connections. Parents forgot their children. Children forgot their parents. Siblings forgot their siblings. People who had been best friends for years, even decades, ceased completely to remember the people who had had such a profound impact on their lives. 

The world became a smaller place. Gaps emerged in organisations, in political bodies, in society, in supply chains. And no one could figure out why but people made do because they had to. What else could be done but soldier on? The world had to keep spinning. People went to work or university. They made plans. The giantesses continued to stomp about but no one remembered them killing anyone. Why would they? Everyone loved the giantesses, they were so big, so beautiful, so serene. As natural a part of history as anything and there was nothing to suggest otherwise, nothing to suggest that the Earth was being remade in the giantesses’ image, one stomp at a time. 

Aoife left her office one day and walked along the river, on the other back, a giantess loomed over several buildings. Despite herself, she felt a rush of arousal as she saw the titan’s skimpy, revealing outfit. She shook her head, trying to focus. The giantess reached down her hands crushing a few vehicles. Aoife blinked. That couldn’t be… 

She shivered. Her memory rewrote itself. There were no cars on the road across the river. No one had been crushed. Everything was exactly as it should be. Everyone loved giantesses. Aoife walked on, finding a bench by the river to eat her sandwich. She didn’t notice the giantess rising and crossing the river in a single step until a shadow fell over her and she looked up to see an enormous foot directly overhead.

Behemoth’s Beach Bulldozing 

Livvy sat down, and dozens of buildings crumbled in an instant. Hotels and apartment buildings collapsed. Stores and restaurants were destroyed. Cars were totalled. People died. The force of the impact rippled through the surviving buildings, shattering windows, setting off alarms, and causing structural damage. With her bare sole posed above a road, the motorists on it floored it to get past her and hopefully escape before the colossus had any ideas about putting her foot down. 

A few brave souls stopped to take a recording for posterity. Perhaps they’d be internet famous for 15 minutes. Perhaps they’d be able to show their grandchildren one day. Either outcome depended on them surviving, a matter entirely out of their hands. The pristine white of Livvy’s pants were marred by the dust and debris beneath her but she seemed utterly unbothered by the state of her outfit as she leisurely reached her hand back and ran it through the water. 

A gesture, casually made, that nevertheless provoked ripples in the water that washed ashore with enough force to carry away unfortunate beachgoers who had not yet escaped and flood the ground floor of multiple buildings. Some of those on the upper floors were trapped, a few brave souls took a calculated risk and jumped into the water below. 

The wave pushed along the shoreline, submerging beach umbrellas, volleyball nets, a freshly renovated Polynesian-themed cocktail bar, and everything in between. As Livvy idly watched these events unfold from on high, the titan smiled. It was so easy to reshape this tiny world according to her whims, knowing there was nothing anyone else could do to stop her. She had transcended consequences. 

Livvy might have been much more aggressive, she might have flattened every building in mere moments, she might have caused much larger waves to form. She didn’t. Somehow, it felt more empowering still to know she could destroy so many things and claim so many lives without even trying at all. 

The world was surely watching and seeing just how relaxed she was in using her immense power. Her serene demeanour didn’t change as she spotted tiny gnats in the distance flying towards her, planes and drones armed to the teeth and ready to bring her down. Or try to, at any rate. 

As the aircraft unleashed hell upon the giantess, Livvy finally settled down fully on the seafront, her hands on her chest and a contented sigh escaping her lips as bombs and missiles rained down upon her. Livvy was so unconcerned by the attack that after a few moments, the distinctive sound of snoring could be heard for several miles.
