Occupational therapy assistants carry out activities and exercises with clients based on a treatment plan developed in collaboration with an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy assistants monitor an individual’s activities to make sure they are performed correctly and to provide encouragement. They also record their client’s progress for use by the occupational therapist. If the treatment is not having the intended effect, or the client is not improving as expected, the occupational therapist may alter the treatment program in hopes of obtaining better results. Occupational therapy assistants also document billing of the client’s health insurance provider. (explorehealthcareers, 2023)

According to the HTCC, "hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. It is a merging of occupational therapy and physical therapy theory and practice that combines comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the upper limb with function and activity. Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, hand therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction, restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual’s ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations."

Occupational Therapy and Autism Awareness month!
Why is neurodiversity important? According to Wake Forest University, the neurodiversity movement is all about celebrating diversity and encouraging people whose brains work differently. Through a neurodiversity-based framework, teachers can more effectively address a wide range of learning needs, and counselors can prepare their students for life beyond high school. Neurodiversity-based strategies can empower students with different brain functionalities to prepare for different challenges, both at school and upon graduation.

April is Occupational Therapy Month! Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people participate in their desired occupations with the therapeutic use of everyday activities, based on the client’s personal interests and needs.
Occupational therapy (OT) considers the complex relationship between the client, the activity, and the environment in which the activity takes place. Examples of OT interventions include:
- Helping a child with a disability to participate fully in school and social situations,
- Assisting an injured worker to regain skills they need to function in their job, or
- Providing supports to older adults experiencing cognitive or physical changes (AOTA, 2023).

The word neurodiversity refers to the diversity of all people. The neurodiversity movement emerged during the 1990s, aiming to increase acceptance and inclusion of all people while embracing neurological differences. While it is primarily a social justice movement, neurodiversity research and education is increasingly important in how clinicians view and address certain disabilities and neurological conditions. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with differences in communication, learning, and behavior, though it can look different from person to person. People with ASD may have a wide range of strengths, abilities, needs, and challenges. Stigma, a lack of awareness, and lack of appropriate infrastructure (such as office setup or staffing structures) can cause exclusion of people with neurodevelopmental differences. Understanding and embracing neurodiversity in communities, schools, healthcare settings, and workplaces can improve inclusivity for all people. It is important for all of us to foster an environment that is conducive to neurodiversity, and to recognize and emphasize each person’s individual strengths and talents while also providing support for their differences and needs. (Harvard Medical School, 2021)
