It seems impossible to keep a good balance of academic, social life, and sleep in college. You don’t have to give up any of the three, if you know how to manage your time wisely. With good time management, it’s possible to have a balanced and healthy life. Here are three tips to help you manage your time better.

Present your tasks visually

Download the Google Calendar app or grab a time grid from the Educational Resource Center (ERC). It doesn’t matter whether you do this online or offline. If you choose to use the ERC time grid, color the time slots which you have classes in one color, and your time to sleep in another. Also color the time slots which you have club meeting, or need to work. With Google Calendar, you can set an alarm prior to the event start time. Presenting your tasks visually gives you a better understanding of your schedule. You have less tendency to procrastinate.

Set reminders for important events

The best time to get this done is the beginning of a semester. After you’ve determined the classes you’re taking, spend an afternoon going through your syllabi. The most effective app is Google Calendar, which allows you to set reminders for repeating events with one simple click. Put your dues in red. Red calls your attention and gives you a feeling of urgency. Also put your midterms and quizzes in red. Put down office hours if you like. Put your extracurricular events in yellow, lunch with friends in green, etc. Going through your calendar in the beginning of each week gives you a better sense of how light or heavy your week is going to be. And based on the workload of the week, you may want to prioritize your academics over happy hours.

Do work for 5 minutes

It’s been a long day and you finally get back to your room. Laying on your bed and playing with your phone is all you want, but there’s this essay which you better get done by tonight. You constantly check the time while you’re chilling, and you say to yourself, “I’ll get started in another 15 minutes”. As time goes by, you’re getting tired and really don’t feel like writing that essay. A good way to prevent this from happening is to start working on your essay for 5 minutes. Play some white noise if it helps you to focus. Do one unpleasant but necessary task for 5 minutes and see how you feel. Most of the time, you keep working on the task after the first 5 minute.

Finals season is nearly upon us, and that means thousands of students vying for a space to study in Mugar, Pavement, the GSU, and other libraries across campus. With so many people around, it can be difficult to focus. Luckily, there are plenty of lesser-known spaces to study across campus to beat the crowds.

● The Dean’s Lounge in the GSU

Located on the third floor of the GSU, the student lounge outside of the Dean of Students’ office suite is a great, quiet place to study for finals or finish up a term paper. When Mugar is overflowing and the GSU is just too loud, there’s always a table or a couch open in the lounge. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a wall of windows and plants, too!

● BU Central

When there isn’t an event happening, the booths in BU Central are a quiet place to study with friends. During finals week, the space is virtually abandoned, making it ideal compared to the library crowds. There are even pool tables if you need a study break!

● Cafe Nero in West

This cafe is a new addition to BU’s campus this fall. That, combined with its location in1047, means that the crowds that overrun Starbucks and Pavement have yet to discover it. There is almost always a table available, and their lattes are top-notch.

● Upper floors of 100 Bay State

Nearly every BU student has spent hours in Marciano Commons, but few take advantage of the 5 other floors of study space. Virtually every floor of 100 Bay State has a study area with beautiful views of the Charles and downtown Boston. The light, airy space is perfect if the stacks of Mugar feel too enclosing.

When I applied to BU as a senior in high school, I had a very exact plan for how my life was would go. Throughout all of high school, I wanted to be a doctor, and adamantly refused to consider any other option. Naturally, I only applied to schools that had good pre-medical programs, and was accepted at, and chose to attend, BU. I lived in a happy fantasy bubble with my perfect, un-questioned future plan throughout the end of my senior year and the beginning of my summer, before arriving in Boston in July for freshmen orientation.

I had applied as a chemistry major, so when it came time to split off into our major groups during orientation, I found myself surrounded by other soon-to-be chemistry majors; other pre-medical students. I attended the pre-medical information session, and listened to all of the people around me discuss how excited they were to start their classes and begin their journey to become a doctor. I tried to muster up the same kind of anticipation, but the only definitive emotion I was feeling was doubt. Did I really want to be a doctor? Did I really want to go to school for so long? Did I really want to spend so much money on medical school in the future? Once I started questioning that one decision, I started questioning everything about my supposedly perfect plan: would I even really like studying science? Why did I choose this plan in the first place?

Before I left orientation, I switched into the undecided major group. I was confused and nervous and frustrated, and it felt like my entire future was one giant question mark. It felt like I didn’t even have a plan, and without a plan, I didn’t really have a future. Of course, that is not true. I am now a junior here at BU, and I have questioned everything that I am doing and changed my mind what feels like a thousand times. I went from being undeclared, to a math and statistics major with a computer science minor, to a mechanical engineering major in the College of Engineering and back to math and statistics major in the College of Arts and Sciences (and I recently added on an earth and environmental science minor but honestly, I think that I am going to change that again).

I have failed exams and surprise! The world didn’t stop spinning. I have had bad internship experiences and amazing ones. I have changed my academic plan over and over and over again, and rather than seeing each change as a catastrophe, I see them for what they are: speed bumps. Things change, we, as college students, inevitably change. We grow, and naturally, so will our plans for our future. As long as we keep calm and remind ourselves that it is perfectly okay to change our minds, we can take these speed bumps in stride.
