i was misdiagnosed as having different rage and defiance disorders my entire childhood bc every white psyche and doctor i saw only saw me as black and nothing else, they saw black ppl as inherently violent and stupid and could not picture me being autistic and dealing with delusions, and u think race has nothing to do with it?

WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT THIS!!! Medical racism and sexism pisses me off to no end! It's how people get killed, and yet the system still orbits around and praises the cis white man as the only being ever (worth researching, diagnosing, etc.) It's why my roommate has never been diagnosed with autism because, well, he's not a white little boy obsessed with trains or whatever... so he's been forced to mask so hard in life he doesn't know how to cope other than to work his life away.

POC folks are not "allowed" to experience symptoms the same as us white folks. It's unfair. As both a disabled person myself and as an anthropologist, I see the ways my brothers and sisters get left behind by the medical field, and it makes my blood boil. Everyone deserves fair treatment; psychiatry should not be based on racist assumptions and value judgements, and yet, here we all are!!

Psychiatric care is life-saving care, and to fuck with a patient like this is to deny them that right to care. America (and the rest of the world, for that matter) has some serious lifting to do, serious reformation to do, before we can truly be free.

You’re not alone! My g-g-g-aunt Nellie Howard was also a big fan of coyotes. This is an excerpt from a letter she submitted to her local newspaper in 1882, soon after her family moved from Maine to Montana.

“Would you like to know about our visitors last night? The men folks heard noises by their bedside, an unmistakable dog concert, yelp, snarl, bow-wow all in a breath. And the wicked creatures came in for the gun to shoot two harmless cayotes. They did not succeed, I am happy to say, and this morning all Cayoteville held a jubilee back under the mountain, at their wonderful deliverance. I shall advise them to send handbills for their next concert, and will furnish the back parlor in the best manner possible for them. Knowing our isolated condition I think they were real neighborly, but some people never know when they are well used, especially men folks.”
