chocolate/strawberry cake + bought a cute watering can + wearable toile bodice for wedding dress #2 (the actual dress will be white ☁️)
we're making plans to go to the uk this summer from mid july to early august – we're thinking of driving via london and through yorkshire and then taking a ferry to northern ireland and driving on to the giants causeway as our destination, and then taking a different route back again. exciting!! any mutuals who would like to meet up if i pass your neck of the woods?

wedding dress in progress
my vision for a clownesque blouse. this is going to be the backside of the collar.
finished a dress that i started last summer & that i meant to wear during the heatwave we had back then. but it works as a skirt for ice skating too ⛸⛸

crawled out of bed to go for a snowy walk
genuinely curious, why did conrad's "heart of darkness" make it onto your list? i've never picked it up, but several of my english & lit profs in university loved to eviscerate it, whenever we discussed the advent of racism or the romanticizing of violent colonialism
it's a divisive book for sure! there are certainly aspects that you could argue are racist (eg, how we never hear the african people themselves speak, the way these people are described, etc.)
but i would say condemning the whole book as racist would be to judge the book by modern moralistic standards and to miss how absolutely groundbreaking the book was. it's not a fun adventure book, and it doesn't glorify "the imperalist enterprise" in the slightest. it aims to unsettle and shock you with its dark, gory, feverish horrors, and in this way challenge that imperalist enterprise. joseph conrad had been to the congo himself in 1890 and he knew what he was writing about. to describe the book as "romanticising violent colonialism" misses the point COMPLETELY, in my opinion.
i can recommend this "the rest is history" podcast episode on heart of darkness: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Zcx1uN5hLkEzkA4ZmPx22?si=kefDl-xVSYeIewKgYMMESg&t=0
the rest of their series on the colonisation of the congo is good as well (and harrowing to listen to).
now you know what your profs think and what i think. definitely give it a read yourself and make up your own mind!
