Saran used to speak very politely most of the time, a habit built on abuse if she got anything wrong with customers. Before she was in Sharlyan, she lived in Othard and worked from when she was a child of 5 to age 12 at a brothel. She only had one comrade, whereas the others laughed and mocked her and the head of the house would beat her if she believed she forgot her place, whether it was in manners, how she spoke or just being there. She had been 'cared for', so she should be grateful to them. So Saran learned to treat everyone politely and talk formally.

The first person who managed to get her to speak a little more casually was surprisingly Estinien. He usually told her to stop that, but at some point, he started ignoring her until she dropped the 'ser'. To him, they were on the same level anyway. They were both warriors of a kind and they weren't nobility, so there is no reason for the polite talk.

Haurchefaunt was the second, his bundle of energy and constant stress that he would not be angered if she simply called him by name. He also promised it would make him happy and somehow, she ended up following his lead in an awkward, stunned manner.

She does eventually learn to call the Scions just by their names, albeit at a slow pace, the twins being the first of the group by pestering her the most since they didn't want her to treat them as special at all, but as a friend because they aren't children anymore. They're comrades under the same destination.

Doing some Masha trace sketches to get her vibe down, using some amazing Art by one of my favourite Artist RAHWIA, animator and artist for the Royal Scandal Series

Masha has definitely traits and similarities with Rosetta so I tried to emulate that. Despite originally wanting her to be quite one note, Masha is truly turning into a quiet fave of mine, I would actually love to explore more. Maybe I should write her story up... who knows.

in any case, Masha is here to stay and so is her brother Sasha. Tho I am a lot less kinder to him than to her.

I kinda like the idea that Saran ends up in Sharlyan after being saved by hy.daelyn when she was 12 and grew up together with the twins as like a older playmate/nanny and worked for house Leveilleur. She was illiterate, so they gave her a basic education and a clothes to wear. She had shown skills as a hunter, but she wanted to blend in, so she kept her skills hidden until she saw work of gleaners. She eventually became a gleaner when the twins became students of the Studium for a short period before quitting, a decision she didn’t make lightly.

She wanted to stay a gleaner, but she had always had the echo since she was a child. And after the calamity and her time in gridania for work (ARR gridania quest before main story, but she was working and accidentally got involved because she couldn't turn a blind eye to their plea), she ended up awakening to the Echo in full. And it scared her. She didnt want to hear it, but the plea seemed genuine that she attend to her will. She told Amelliance and Fourchenault, they told her to talk to the Students. And the Students encouraged her to heed her call, as it will help them and her understand what the Echo is. And it would give her an answer to her own question: "why me?"

So she quit being a gleaner. She got Ameliance's and Fourchenault's reluctant blessing and traveled with the twins to Eorzea, where they all went their separate ways.
