-- Ted Chiang, from "Why A.I. Isn't Going to Make Art"
I'm so glad they got Ted Chiang -- a wonderful writer of science fiction and thinker about technology, in my opinion -- to write this essay. My favorite line was this:
Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium.
As a former librarian I'm actually required to remind you that many libraries that subscribe to Libby are opted into a program that lets you subscribe and access magazines for free with no wait
And that this is actually a really fun, low cost way to not only access news and larger cultural magazines, but also to get free patterns for many different crafts that you can screenshot if need be and that lower the financial barriers to entry for trying new things
From my experience working in both academic and public libraries, many libraries are use it or lose it funding-- I have to say this because a lot of patrons feel guilty for how much they use the library and how often they're using it funny enough, but the worst thing you can do for libraries is not try out new features and not use what's already given to you as much as possible.
The numbers that come as a result of your patronage are how most libraries justify their continued existence in times of financial hardship, which sucks but, go check out some magazines on Libby!
modern social media should stop offering "sync with your phone contacts to follow them" options and start offering "block all your phone contacts so they never see your account" options

This might actually be scarier that what happened in the movie
why r callouts always like "please dont harass this person and dont go after them. anyway heres every single detail of their life gathered by stalking and their private profiles for all to see"
"please don't go after this person! now let me post this document for every single one of my followers and list every single one of their usernames"
“bend over” “bend what? over”

Jessie Buckley as The Bride The Bride! (2026) dir. Maggie Gyllenhaal
there was a point in time where i found tiny depressed looking weevils under just about every oak leaf i flipped, but this Coeliodes was probably my favorite. no longer in the classic scrunched up seed pose that i tended to find them in but also not really alarmed by my presence, just gazing at nothing in particular. contemplative, even

"i'm doing this for my wife and kids" justifications are so so so fucking funny like even ignoring the patriarchal arrogance the naked desperation to have an excuse to commit acts of heinous violence and the implications of the family unit as property to be defended and butchered like livestock it's like. if you want a hole to die in so badly grab a shovel and go outside. why are you digging the fucking trenches in our living room man.
every time you assume that others are thinking negatively of you or judging you behind your back, you are bullying yourself through them. at the end of the day, you don't know what thoughts are running through their heads unless they verbally express them to you. until then, every one of 'their' opinions about you is nothing more than your fear, and whatever assumption is born from your fear is yours to let go - not theirs to disprove.
can you imagine going up to a stranger in public who looked at you for a beat too long and going, “I bet you think I look stupid. You think my walk is strange, right? And you think that this coat does not suit me at all, in fact, I look ridiculous and it’s embarrassing! You also definitely don’t like this haircut. You think it makes my head look like it has a weird shape and it’s not flattering at all, don’t you? I see it in the way you just looked at me.”
And the whole time they didn’t even register you were there in their sight. Those thoughts you just prescribed to them– about your walk and your coat and your haircut– are yours. It wouldn’t be fair to go up to them and tell them what you assume that they think, and the fact that you keep those beliefs to yourself but still prescribe them to other people, does not make it more fair. Not to them, and definitely not to you.
they have some flowers to give you (more weird vases)
