I fuck with this
[image description: screenshot of writing formatted as a question and answer exchange. headline of piece is: The Proposal to Raise Every Boy as a Girl. (author not listed)
Q. You want to raise every boy as a girl? Yes.
Q. Why? A boy will learn to hate girls as long as he is raised in such a way where he is treated as better, and superior to, his girl peers, whenever he is cruel to girls. So, instead, we raise boys as girls.
Q. What if they say they are not a girl, and want to be acknowledged as boy? Then you know they are a boy, so you must make sure to understand them as boy, and not a girl.
Q. What does it mean to be 'raised as a girl'? That's up for you to decide. The only difference is that you should not raise boys any differently than you raise girls, since you raise every boy as a girl.
Q. Girls and boys are raised in specific ways for specific purposes, so it does not make sense to raise boys as girls. If you raise every boy as a girl, then there is no being which is not raised as a girl, so anyone raised as a girl necessarily must learn to do anything and everything to grow up, without restrictions on tasks, labours, or interests.
Q. But boys and girls are different. All two girls are different, and raising girls in one specific way destroys this individuality in favour of moulding girls to serve the same master. Still, the girls resist to live life on their own terms. If girls can be raised such that they know they can do anything they want, including not being girls, so too will boys raised as girls.
Q. Why not raise every girl as a boy? Because if a girl does not exist among boys, then the girl is made.
Q. Why not raise girls and boys as themselves? The self must be made in a world where girls and boys can first and foremost be themselves. One step towards this goal is to raise every boy as a girl.
Q. The way people raise girls is cruel, so why would you raise boys with that cruelty? If you raise girls with cruelty, then you should stop being cruel to girls.

Was talking to a coworker today who explained that her grandfather was like Snow White “but Californian. And an old man.” in that the creatures of the forest would follow him around and presumably duet with him.
“When he died the ravens sat in the trees outside for a week, watching. Taking turns. A horde of raccoons tried to break into the house every night, tearing at the siding. Eventually they gave up, but it was unsettling.”
“Aww. They were checking on him!” I said, like a normal person. Internally, I thought “Maybe you could do the thing you do with dead pets, where you show them to the living pets so the living pet understands they’re gone. But I guess if you did that to a bunch of scavenging species, they’d be like “Well, that’s very sad but he IS food now.” So what you’d need, for human sensibilities, is some sort of transparent corpse barrier. Like a see-through coffin oh that’s what the dwarves were doing! You’ve stopped paying attention to this conversation about the loss of a beloved family member you gotta phase back in.”
oh that's what the dwarves were doing
If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)
At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.
Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.
Same guys btw. So they did turn out good yeah
They sleep

I have just learned that Mountain Goats are NOT, in fact, actual Goats.
I have never heard of this band. I AM in fact referring to the animal.
But wait, there’s more!
What ancient animal discoverer did this?
apparently i’m a millennial woman
I mean, yeah, valid! but but but I also want to add on the fact that lotr AGGRESSIVELY rejects the “grimdark” and “gritty” settings that is so prevalent in fantasy (and also in general) right now, because I physically can not shut up about it
It is hope and love and compassion that saves each character individually, and because of that, the world. Frodo fails in the end, but his acts of compassion from earlier in the story save the day. And even as the world is saved, it is acknowledged that Frodo failed—without judgement, without blame. He fails, and he is still loved.
And like what can happen in the real world, he is still irrevocably changed by his trauma. But there is still hope—he has to leave, but he leaves with the promise of healing, and the promise that his ever-faithful Sam will follow.
Aragorn, Boromir, Frodo, Sam; each and every one of the characters are driven by their love of the people around them and their hope for the future. They cling to that love and hope throughout their trials, and that bears them through.
Of course people are watching it for comfort!!!! Lotr is eternally consistent in its promise, which Sam articulates so clearly in The Two Towers: “Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer.”
Things are dark and awful and terrible, but it will not be that way forever. That is the promise of LOTR. A promise of hope, and the reminder that it is love and compassion—for our friends, for our families, for the strangers we’ve never even met—that will save us in the end.
I just want to add, it’s not just that The Lord of the Rings rejects grimdark and gritty fantasy - The Lord of the Rings is the original. Grimdark is what you get when you reject the bright half of the eucatastrophe.
Dude has a death wish
Delighted to announce this bird is real and is a corvid.
Truly the family that just keeps giving.
I haven’t seen it in the notes yet, so afaik, here’s the source of that video! So now you can see the funny poison bird much more clearly.
It was taken by a biologist that studies birds so it seems like he knows what he’s doing. For the most part. Here’s his caption:
You all know that he 100% licked his fingers after handling that bird
6.24.2024 ✦ I used to keep sketchbooks filled with little studies of coffee cups, leaves, storefronts, friends' faces. Then somehow the habit fell away, until my notebooks contained nothing but text—ideas that never left the page; plans, anxieties, perseverations. Those pages feel like stone walls to look back on. Journaling that way had centripetal force, pulling me into myself.
These days, I'm trying to revive those abandoned modes of visual expression—not separately from my journaling practice, but integrated into it. I guess I'm changing my definition of what journaling is in the first place—so that it includes collaging, painting, commonplacing, writing poems. I don't want to only look inward. I want to look at the world too.
These more visual pages feel so much more inviting to return to. The tedious, self-absorbed stream-of-consciousness is still there, but alongside it are observations I can take in at a glance, things that caught my eye, reminders of the tools I once kept closest at hand. It feels better.

it will take a long time but once it passes I’ll be glad I endured it
My personal experience with being asked this question and then given that line, is that the neurotypical person expected you to feel shame. I have some slightly less anecdotal evidence to back up this anecdotal experience. I took substitute teacher training once, and we were told that the best thing to do with middle schoolers "acting up," was to shame them, to figure out how to draw attention to them and this negative attention in front of their peers would shame them into good behaviour, or at least silence. I raised my hand, having already distinguished myself as the "weirdo" of the group, and said, "Is this the reason I spent a lot of time in the principal's office for truthfully, loudly, and clearly answering questions like, 'would you care to share your thoughts with the class?'" And was told yes, that was a perfect example, but I was the rare case where it backfires.
Since then, I have responded to that type of question with, "Do you want an explanation, or was your intent simply to indicate that I need to feel inferior, right now?" and it does tend to turn the tables a little bit.
Be careful though; someone who does this to you likely already has decided there's only one acceptable outcome and will subordinate you no matter how you attempt to resist. It is good that sometimes the tables turn, but the majority of people who feel comfortable enough to put themselves in the position of power this way do not willingly accept a rebuke and may escalate or even become violent if you try.
Disengaging or redirecting their attention sometimes can help. Other people are very good for this and an interruption from a third party almost always de-fuses the situation. Someone trying to do this to you will often only go forward when you're alone, so try not to be if you know it's coming.
But if all else fails (it's your boss, a parent, a teacher, another authority, someone with massive social advantage compared to yourself, etc.) you may be stuck with someone who's plan A is to subordinate & punish you and they have no plan B. You may just end up taking heat no matter what and its not your fault. They are the ones who want 'an excuse' to belittle others.
I’m not neurotypical but I do this because it’s a Standard Cultural Response and it got wired into my Standard Responses, but I tend to joke about it, too (ie: why are you doing xyz, wait nevermind I said that but I know why. What I mean is stop doing xyz). It’s not USUALLY meant to be belittling by most adults, it’s GENERALLY meant to be a reminder that what you’re doing is well outside the behavioral norm. It’s what’s funny about this classic Calvin and Hobbes panel:
Neurotypical folks taking a phrase like this literally is generally them trying to bypass the reminder and instead get into a power struggle, so neurotypical authority figures react to it that way.
Giving your reasoning is often a way of arguing that you are correct, rather than explaining mistaken thought processes for most neurotypical folks. You can avoid this miscommunication a lot of times by saying “oh I see now. I had thought xyz but I see my mistake” or “you’re right, I was thinking xyz so my bad”.
Uh
I realize just now as I finish this TED talk that the cultural expectation for this question was “empathize with me over the annoying wrong thing people do” and not “I am asking for genuine clarification” but I stand by my response to ignore that based on the premise of the complaint.

can anyone tell me the watch order for every movie ever so i can understand all references and homages
@dionrevel PLEASE share the link.
Lol sure!!
For movies, here is the beginner's list:
Beginner's guide for getting in the loop.
And the more advanced list:
Advanced guide to getting in the loop. Supplementary to "Civilization Essentials." If a movie is on this list, then it has one of these: -Po
Not all these movies are necessarily good, but the ones that gave me small pop culture epiphanies. It made me realize that 30%-40% of the jokes from modern sitcoms are references/parodies- and these movies are their source material.
^^ This is also true for socializing. So many people I thought were naturally funny were just doing movie bits.
[I actually do have a job, I am just a big fan of lists and graphs and flow charts etc.]
Someone linked me this beautiful poster, and I'm just really impressed.

This tweet means a lot to me.
It’s probably a really cool and good sign that this post I made in 2014 is going around again, right?
I read the lore card for the summer event and the whole reason they’re holding this beach party is to celebrate Scott being free from alchemax. I’m gonna cry they care about him so much
