since we watched the Phantom of the Opera proshot the other day it's on my brain and i remember one time when i was a teenager one of my friends got actually pretty mad at me for pointing out that the Phantom is kind of, like, a horrible controlling asshole, and i know we were both kids but in hindsight it's really fucking funny because at least in the musical (i never read the novel) the Phantom being a horrible controlling asshole and him realizing he's a horrible controlling asshole and that Christine might have actually loved him if he wasn't is arguably the entire point

like all of raoul's lyrics towards christine are about how he wants to protect her and take care of her and despite the phantom singing "you were bound to love her when you heard her sing" it's pretty clear that, no, raoul's loved her because she's her since they were children. meanwhile the phantom's lyrics are all about her voice and how she's a conduit for his music and the cure for his loneliness. like yeah the phantom's a sad and compelling character but you really gotta do some olympic level mental gymnastics to say that the character telling christine he'll protect her from the character harassing and stalking her is a worse love interest than the character that's harassing and stalking her.

and anyways all that to say i think phantom of the opera is a lot more interesting on the whole when we're not reducing the titular phantom to a misunderstood bad boy
