the good and wonderful @bleekay liveblogged a re-read of aidays so now im sharing a new preview of chapter 7 bc no good deed goes unpunished:
The walk to the Jasmine Dragon is a marathon that passes in the blink of an eye. They loiter by the door for a minute, Sokka trying to catch his breath and gather up his nerve.
āI know itāll be - weird, or whatever,ā Toph says. āWe donāt have to go in. If you donāt want to.āĀ
And the thing is, Sokka doesnāt want to. He doesnāt want to burst his bubble of acting like heās totally okay with everything - of pretending that it doesnāt matter, itās water under the bridge, heās fine and definitely not miserable. He doesnāt want to have to go in and endure the pleasantries and the niceness and the conversations about how are you doing where he canāt answer honestly because heās still mostly lying to himself.
But then thereās the other thing.Ā
The thing where Sokka does want to go in, actually. The thing where Sokka hasnāt seen Zuko since he was out of his mind with a fever, and hasnāt spoken to him since he broke his own heart letting him - he almost laughs, like he has any authority over what Zuko does - go and move on without him. The thing where Sokka canāt decide between a clean break and being weaned off slowly.Ā
The thing where Sokka misses him so badly he feels it like a weight on his chest, ribs splintering and lungs collapsing under the pressure, choking, suffocating, drowning.
āItās just -ā Sokka starts. He heaves another sigh. āWhatever. I want coffee. Come on.ā
