I’ve seen a lot of (mostly straight) actors lately talking about how they don’t think they should play gay roles. As a queer person, my first response is ‘that’s stupid’, but then I think about queer actors being passed over for straight actors, about does that mean gay actors can’t play straight? That’s stupid. Also what if I just really want to watch my favourite ladies kiss other ladies, and I have no goddam idea. What do the masses think? Reblog for reach?

I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's totally fine to have a job that just pays the bills and to do your creative thing in your spare time. That's not failure, or "settling".

If your job is tolerable, pays a living wage, and leaves you with enough energy to do the creative thing, it's probably a better option than sucking the joy out of your hobby by making it your income source. Keeping your hobby as your hobby means you're not beholden to actual or potential customers or gatekeepers - you can do whatever the fuck you want, because you're not relying on it to keep a roof over your head. Which means you'll probably make better art.

#i'm a bad example because my hobby is fanfiction #but a friend works for an insurance company and does photography on evenings and weekends #they sell some of their work but they don't have to because the insurance salary pays the bills and for the camera upgrades #so they can do whatever the hell takes their fancy rather than what sells #whereas another friend became a full time photographer and never does it for fun anymore

Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:

Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."

It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.
