for the WIP tag game, Catherine Babysitter please?
Thank you!! I need to work this fic out and get it finished. I've decided to actually make it a series and this will be the first installment. The summary is that Catherine got called one night by David Cartwright (when she was still working with Partner) for an important mission. The mission ... babysit his grandson because he was busy. This leads to Catherine and Baby River bonding and when he comes to Slough House he has her firmly in his corner.
Here's a snippet:
“You want me to babysit?” Catherine squeaked, stood in the entryway of this house that was worth more than she would probably make in a lifetime. “Yes. Just until tomorrow afternoon when Rose gets back from her trip. River’s a compliant kid, he won’t cause you any trouble. I’ve left a card on the counter with the pin and some cash. The fridge is fully stocked. He probably won’t wake up until late morning,” he explained, pulling on his jacket as he spoke. “I don’t know if I …” “You’ll be fine. He practically looks after himself,” David waved her off. That wasn’t what her concern was, but it was a weird way to talk about a child. River shouldn’t have to be able to look after himself; what had it been like up until this point that this child was self sustaining? “That’s not … I don’t have kids,” Catherine argued. She couldn’t say no but she could at least express how unqualified for this job she was. She didn’t have kids, didn’t even have a husband, and didn’t really want kids; there were too many bodily fluids involved. “I’m sure you can work it out. You have the nature.” David wasn’t even looking at her. He had dragged her all the way out of the London into the back of beyond because she was the first woman he could think of and of course women have a natural childrearing ability.

Thinking about the parallels between Frank Harkness and David Cartwright. David didn't groom River for his chosen career to the extent that Harkness would have, but the end result isn't all that different.
River's miserable at Slough House and would be even unhappier at the Park, but he refuses to quit, or acknowledge that he's not suited to the work. He can't imagine any kind of future where he's not in MI5, even though he knows exactly what MI5 is like and it's actively tried to kill him more than once.
I wonder how much David consciously molded River to follow in his footsteps, and - given that David knows exactly what MI5 is like - how much he thought or cared about what that would do to him.
