Child care options, internet access and extra living space leave a gulf between rich and poor in coping with disruptions to school and work.
“This is a white-collar quarantine,” said Howard Barbanel, a Miami-based entrepreneur who owns a wine company. “Average working people are bagging and delivering goods, driving trucks, working for local government.”
Some of those catering to the well-off stress that they are trying to be good citizens. Mr. Michelson emphasized that he had obtained coronavirus tests only for patients who met guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rather than the so-called worried well.
Still, a kind of pandemic caste system is rapidly developing: the rich holed up in vacation properties; the middle class marooned at home with restless children; the working class on the front lines of the economy, stretched to the limit by the demands of work and parenting, if there is even work to be had.

Being back in my sprawl-y midwestern hometown for extended periods is both good and bad. Good in that:
It confirms to me repeatedly that I would not ever want to build a life here, and that the modern lower-to-middle-class lifestyle in this city is isolating and sad for someone with my interests and personality
I can spend time with my parents and understand a little more about them as human beings every time I visit them
It’s bad in that:
I’m always both very bored and deeply sad when I spend too much time here. I’m here for another 3 days and I’ve been ready to go back to Brooklyn since at least 2 days ago. A lot of the routines and norms I encounter when I come back here just make me really anxious and sad in a way that the workings of the city don’t
The weather is terrible and almost nothing is safely walkable or bikeable and everything is so sprawled and far apart, so it’s really hard to just go outside and exist in the world without getting in a car, driving somewhere, parking, usually spending $, etc.
Finding interesting stuff to do and encountering creativity/individuality is just so much rarer and more labor-intensive here
Not to be that bitch who moves to NY and idealizes it bc god knows it’s rly problematic and stressful and horrifying in its own way sometimes, but rn I just want to go back to New York ASAP, plz and thx
Mariko Mori inside her universal “time capsule” : collage by Janeth Davalos (Sisters Of The Ethers)
Blah blah blah the horror of being back in my hometown and out in public at popular locations and catching glimpses of people I vaguely know etc etc u know the feeling
Tiny houses are funny because poor people have been living in trailers and small homes forever and rich people decided to make fancy versions and call them a “new housing trend”
It’s like how poor people have been batch cooking and eating leftovers forever but now rich people are like “hey we invented a new thing called ~meal prep~”
Why is that every founder/chief of a major brand is either emotionally stunted, sociopathic or both

The slowed-down Chipmunks are both brilliant and terrifying
By now, we’re all pretty used to people speeding up vocal samples to make them sound like Alvin And The Chipmunks. It’s how Kanye West launched his career. But what happens when you slow down Alvin And The Chipmunks so much that the vocals sound like they were sung by a regular human? As it turns out, you get an amazing collision of pop vocals and sludge-filled doom metal instrumentals.
Toronto-based electronic musician Brian Borcherdt, best known for his work with Holy Fuck, is the mind behind chipmunkson16speed, which is the result of finding both a bunch of old Chipmunks records and a suitcase record player with 16 RPM setting.

This is insane.
this is the best song in the world?
I might listen to this on a regular basis now…
It’s like really good? Like if this was a real band, I would go see it.
Three things: 1) This is really dope. 2) I can’t believe the people who originally made these recordings didn’t go on a massively successful run as a goth-rock band, which would have led to a massive spike in bass-bass-drums-keys quartets. 3) How much money am I gonna have to pay the National to start covering songs in this style?
Insert that photo set was anyone going to tell me about this new joke rap group (a very worthy successor to Lonely Island) or was I just supposed to stumble upon this while poking around Spotify.png
time to move to berlin
It was a mass movement of tenants, a majority of the city's renters, which forced the government into action. This wasn't some benevolent SocDems who did it out of their love for the proletariat, they had to be forced by the working class.
Organize against your landlords
Do you think that deep self-absorption (and/or narcissism) is an unavoidable trait in artists of all types?
If you need a good book rec I just finished Severance by Ling Ma
It’s speculative fiction/thoughtful sci fi about a deadly and bizarre disease slowly overtaking society and gutting the country, all as a metaphor for the collapse of society under late capitalism
But it’s also a funny, specific, moving and beautifully-written meditation about the confusion and existential dread of being a working millennial and trying to visualize a future in what is obviously a slowly declining society/country
I devoured the book and cannot recommend it enough. It’s not depressing or pretentious—just profound and compelling in a very observational, simply-written way

Damn my dad just talked to me for like 2 hours about emotional vulnerability, familial relationships and intimacy’s link to maturity and it was, as the kids say, lit
I was rly upset after the whole blowout between my sister and the rest of the fam and he came outside, sat next to me, and basically told me she’s immature and volatile and that my feelings are valid, which was nice
And told me that in about a decade things will be better because she’s still caught in weird post-college party life right now and hasn’t had any real growth since she graduated (v true). He has three sisters, all of whom are a little weird or difficult in their own ways, and he said that his relationships with them (and their relationships with each other) didn’t solidify and stabilize until well into adulthood because they were all maturing and learning empathy and/or valuable emotional lessons at wildly different rates
And then my dad and I talked sat on the curb of our driveway with glasses of whiskey and talked for another hour about the future of humanity and cities and people in the world and all the things we’re nervous about and all the things we’re hopeful about
It was a really lovely way to end the evening after the horrific family smackdown earlier
‘Robinia Pseudoacacia’ 2019 A big ol woven tapestry for my show. This one was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch paintings which so perfectly depict the chaos and destructive nature of humanity
