The most infuriatingly under-discussed aspect of HGSN is Hikaru’s inherent transness. He has had to experience the grief always projected onto trans people from the very beginning. He’s “not the same Hikaru I knew”—and although this is ultimately true in the story, it does not change the allegorical nature of this and how Hikaru feels like an imposter. He is forced to pretend to be what he’s not. He has to rip a piece of himself out in order to be considered a non-threat. Him trying to feel good too during the classroom scene is treated as wrong or dangerous. He’s referred to as a monster time and time again. It makes him feel alone and that his feelings are less than a regular human’s. His closest friend infantilizes him. He has to repress himself for the sake of others’ convenience and safety. He goes by a name that belongs to someone long gone—a dead name. Who even is Hikaru in a world where he’s allowed to embrace who he really is? Would he even identify with being a “he”, I wonder?
