I have read lots of fun books this year!! I was going to just say like 2 of them and then typed so much more so this ended up being a half-year review. Books!
Assassin's Apprentice (Robin Hobb)
I have read the first two books and am waiting on the third from the library. Super well written and really compelling narrative.
The Examiner (Janice Hallett)
A super fun epistolary murder mystery. I read this basically in one sitting because I was too stressed to put it down
One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This (Omar El Akkad)
I can't really say much that hasn't already been said about this book - it just needs to be read
A Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting / A Lady's Guide to Scandal (Sophie Irwin)
I think my favourite books of the year so far. Period romances, witty & well-paced, I read the first one on a plane and loved it so much I immediately bought the second, which I think I might love more
Lavinia (Ursula K. Le Guin)
My first Ursula!!! Did give me a very existential feeling of listening to the same stories humans have been telling for more than a thousand years.
The Raven Scholar (Antonia Hodgson)
I'm mad that the sequel is not out yet. Intriguing magic system and societal structure, the character are not tweens, it's both a trial and a murder mystery.
The God of the Woods
The narrator was excellent for this. Fucked up rich person summer camp mystery!
This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me (Ilona Andrews)
Apparently they are a husband/wife duo who write all their books together which is cute as well. Isekai/magic portal story (my first ever!) and it was so fun. Balanced the exposition well alongside the active plot and had some very cool twists. Another where I am mad that I have to WAIT for the sequel.
The Shadow of the Wind (Carlos Ruiz Zafon)
Reading this with my mini book club after literal years of my sister trying to get me to read it. It is worth the hype!
Pride & Prejudice (Jane Austen)
A re-read. Austen never misses.
Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman)
The experience of watching your friend play an RPG except you don't need to go home just when it's getting good. You do, however, need to wait 16 weeks for the library hold of the next 7 books.
The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny & Murder (David Grann)
I started the year by watching Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World so this book felt very connected. Well-structured narrative non-fiction.

Who let this happen. This book sucks ass. Why am I being preached to the whole time and why are so many people on the internet acting as though this book changed their lives?
Hello Beautiful (Ann Napolitano)
Everyone in this book is allergic to conflict, including the author. If you're going to have a messy family have it be actually messy, don't just have them ignore each other and then throw the stupidest curveball in the world in. Cannot believe anyone likes this one.
in new zealand, our evil government are trying to legislate definitions of women and men, in ways that are legally incoherent but clearly trying to pave the way for more horrifically transphobic legislation. we have an election in a few months but our main opposition party, and all our mainstream news media, are so spineless and cooked that there's a good chance the ghouls will win reelection.
it took 2 whole months for local terf group 'speak up for women' to get 2,000 signatures on the petition that led to this new bill in our parliament.
it's taken five days for this pro-trans 'they don't speak for us' petition to get 17,000 signatures.
this is a show of support that is really heartening for a lot of trans people in our corner of the world.
cis/ish women, if you're from here but haven't signed yet, please do. and if you're not from here and you know any new zealanders, could you send them this petition? a full fifth of our population lives overseas, and there's a good chance they don't follow the news.
TL;DR upfront: we all have limited time in the day, and while you can use it to sign this petition if you like, the most effective thing you can do right now is make a submission on the actual bill that is currently in the Select Committee stage and open for feedback. Your signature on a petition might be read. Your submission in Parliament's call for submissions will be read.

Even formal petitions made regarding matters Parliament is already considering will be ignored. If you want to do something useful to stop this particular flavour of bullshit, your best bet is to make a submission to the Select Committee currently considering this bill. You can, and I encourage you to, do so here:
