Peter took deep breath and blurted out before he bit off his own tongue, "I'mkindof-sortof-Spider-Man,"and winced. His fingers curled anxiously around the loop atop his backpack as he stared at his friend.

Harry stared back at him blankly, blinked once, and leaned forward. "What?"

A retelling of the "Carnage" episode in season 2. A scenario in which Peter HAD told Harry he was Spider-Man before Goblin arrived, and how that information impacts their relationship.

Rescue Heroes.

The animated series ‘Rescue Heroes’ is the most wholesome kids’ action show ever made. The show was about a team of highly-skilled emergency responders that would step in whenever and wherever there was a dangerous situation, from a house fire to an earthquake. As a Canadian born in the ‘90s, Rescue Heroes was my favourite cartoon growing up, mostly because of the cool vehicles and gadgets the protagonists used, and the title sequence that still gives me goosebumps. But now I love the show for 4 reasons I was too young to appreciate before:

1. Abandoning the hero-villain dynamic - Rescue Heroes is the only action show I can remember where there was rarely a sentient antagonist. The problem the protagonists faced in each episode was never really one caused by a person with malicious intentions, but a natural/accidental event with no particular person to blame. The main problem could never be resolved simply by fighting/convicting/subduing anyone, unless you think you can press charges against the Pacific tectonic plate for causing an earthquake in California. I still love how the show never really featured a fight scene (I think, I haven’t finished binging the series to verify yet) and yet it still gave me the ‘Batman’ vibe through the characters’ cool equipment like grappling hooks and VTOL aircraft and sensor goggles. The focus of the heroes’ goals was shifted from ‘defeating evil’ to ‘ensuring the safety of people, regardless of their guilt’. Batman has a similar philosophy with his no-killing rule (save for certain versions in which Batman does kill, e.g. Ben Affleck’s portrayal), but most of his story arcs still mainly involve fighting and subduing someone, which distracts from his primary goal: to make people safer. Rescue Heroes boldly rejected the notion that adversity needs to be personified in order to make the story interesting.

2. Brainwashing the youth with safety advice - At the end of each episode, the Rescue Heroes would break the fourth wall to speak directly to the viewer to explain the dangers of the situation faced in the episode and how to prevent/minimize harm to one’s self and others. I feel like as a kid, having the characters I idolized speak to me about safety made it more meaningful to me, and having a narrative component to it made it easier to remember. Rescue Heroes gave kids an awareness of real-world threats and how to deal with them.

3. Feminist norms - In Rescue Heroes, female-identifying characters were written with backgrounds in fields that are mostly male-dominated in real life, like aviation and firefighting. Ariel Flyer was the main aviation specialist featured on the show, and Wendy Waters was a firefighter and explosives expert. Male characters listened, trusted, and spoke respectfully to female characters, even in high-stress situations, and were never shown to doubt their physical strength nor their judgement on the basis of gender. Women were portrayed as being competent, rational, and authoritative.

4. Protagonists who are Good PeopleTM - People often point out things like toxic masculinity, prejudicial comments, politically-incorrect jokes, all of which we are told to avoid, but I rarely see decent examples of healthy behaviour. Rescue Heroes demonstrates instead of only reprimanding. Racial diversity was portrayed with no difference in how people spoke to/about members of other races. If any of the characters did show unhealthy behaviour, it was written such that that behaviour would exacerbate the problem so that the character learns by the end of the episode why that kind of behaviour is detrimental to themselves and/or people around them. Even subtle forms of abuse/oppression were called out. The Rescue Heroes sometimes met someone whose actions/negligence had inadvertently put people in danger, but instead of instantly slapping on the cuffs and calling the district attorney, the Heroes would speak firmly about the consequences of the character’s behaviour and how to prevent similar situations in the future. I grew up asking myself ‘What would Billy Blazes say?’ The defining characteristic of each of the Rescue Heroes was that their compassion outweighed their righteousness.

Admittedly the premise of having the firefighting-equivalent of Seal Team 6 deployed to a single house fire on the other side of the planet seems a little unrealistic. The practicality of implementing a similar program in real life seems pretty weak unless the U.S. suddenly chills out and cuts a small fraction of their military budget. The dialogue in the show is often a little too charitable to the cooperativeness of civilian characters at the plot’s convenience, but I’m noticing all of these things now as a 20-year-old; I doubt I noticed when I was seven.

An issue with Amadeus is that he’s really rebellious and arrogant, leading him to a lot of danger. Miles being his ‘younger brother’ is somewhat impressed by his antics but tries to humble himself and be more responsible since he looks up to Peter’s leadership and moral compass while Cho looks up to Peter’s Determination and ethical stance.

Something that was an issue while they were growing up was of course money; Peter did street fighting, Cho did bot fighting (or just gambeling in general) Even though peter was technically doing the more dangerous part since his was physical he still hated Amadeus being involved in something that dangerous (he also hated that a literal child had to earn money for basic essentials), so naturally he ‘’banned’’ it and Cho fought him on it. After that they fell into a pattern of Amadeus pretending he stopped, eating a suspicious amount of money from one of his coverup jobs, then getting into trouble, then peter having to help him/ finding written threats, them arguing about it, and repeat.

After the team is assembled, the ultimates + older spider bro’s are assigned a mission to go undercover to one party thrown by an anonymous source at a undocumented storage facility since many parties like these have been happening over the past few months and have lead to a total of seven reported missing teenagers (not a lot for New York but highly suspicious considering how there have been seven blurry venom like-red-and black-ish figures found in pictures taken by spy cams on agents Sheila sent in to spy on Norman).

At that Party multiple things go down but the most notable is the following:

Drugs and alcohol (as per the norm) but what’s suspicious is that no one knows the source of these drugs.

Danny having to do some as to not get caught which was less than fortunate but it lead to the team discovering that the kidnappings are acc ottos doing and are unrelated to what they saw on the spy cams. Danny acts fine for a while but soon after he goes blank and his face pales, he leaves the party and Luke follows him to what he discovers to be ottos lab; turns out Otto was drugging teens to experiment on mutating them.

Luke is able to get Danny to sober up and they end up freeing the kidnapped children but that backfired as Otto chipped them in a way where he could control them. They attack and things get bloody.

Soon the duo realize that the mutants where going back to the party they quickly followed those they were unable to restrain and warn the rest of their team.

At the party the team splits up, peter assigned himself to be protecting the outside and had scarlet be the leader of the inside team, but when he gets to the battle he sees a figure of a short scrappy boy shooting webs at the mutants ignoring Danny and Luke yelling warnings about how his strategy is wrong. Peter immediately goes into battle bc his team mates are obviously overwhelmed and shoots webs at the guy miles didn’t web properly. The battle continues for a while but eventually stops and peter gives miles an earful and finds out why he was there in the first place

Miles followed Amadeus to a party that involved a bot fight as entertainment, that’s how they both ended up in a fight with a couple of goons and actually pinned down the guy that started passing the drugs

Amadeus pulled his classic “act dumb then play smart” move, causing the brute he was playing against to go all in and bet all his earnings. No need to say Amadeus won and in his cocky nature said something along the lines of “Honestly I’m just as surprised as you are! Talk about beginners luck huh but don’t worry fellas we can’t all be winners, but hey maybe next time?” In a cherry tome as he collected his money.

This caused the guy he was against to get angry and get violent, he got up faster than anyone could process and pinned Amadeus to the ground; a knife was dangerous close to his finger as the man fiercely yelled about how he was unbeatable and no one could humiliate him without consequences.

Miles immediately got involved and secretly webbed the knife out of the mans hands and webbed the man in a constraint manner. They both managed to escape from his ‘friends’ (still in the storage unit at this point)

Miles starts giving Amadeus an earful but cho interrupts him to point out a guy who he saw drugging a girls drink and immediately leaves, they split into two: miles going after the guy and Cho warning the girl and seeing if anyone else was drugged.

Whilst collecting samples he gets the guys name, his joy lives only for half a second before a pair of hands are on his shoulder and before even fanthoming what was happening the brute from earlier had him pinned up to a wall by the neck and starts threatening him only to get clocked from behinds by a walking ball of sunshine with a scar.

Amadeus shares what he was able to gather about the drug itself (he left out how he kept a sample for himself).

When peter comes back with a (slightly) bleeding miles only to find a Amadeus with choking bruises on his neck he nearly has a stroke.

Needless to say it wasn’t the first impression they were hoping to give the ultimates and apparently having three people lecturing them wasn’t enough so Ava decided to take over as the fourth person.

What if Peter formed the Web Warriors first? Like, he met Amadeus and Miles and Ben all before S.H.I.E.L.D ever approached him? I have a few ideas for this AU, so let's get into it.

May is dead in this AU. Her and Ben were killed by the same robber when Peter was 13.

In this AU, he had already gotten his powers a month before.

Peter runs away from an abusive foster family, and brings with him 9-year old Amadeus Cho, his foster brother and huge science nerd.

The two find an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city, and settle down there. The area isn't that safe, especially for two kids, but Peter has his spider powers.

Peter uses his powers to become a street fighter to earn money, in addition to taking pictures for the daily bugle.

It's just the two of them, until Peter turns 14, and Amadeus 11, and Peter decides to become Spiderman after saving a couple from a mugger.

Before he's just been a blip on Fury's radar, but Fury turns his attention to him, after he's sighted at the site of an inter-demensional portal.

This is about 6-7 months into being Spiderman. In this, a portal opens up, sucking Peter through. There, he meets Miles.

In this AU, Miles is living with an aunt, after his dad died and his mom went missing . There's evidence she's still alive, but they haven't been able find her.

Peter gets sucked back with Miles, but he gets a glimpse of where his mom is as it closes.

Another kid witnesses the portal. A boy named Eugene Thompsin, called Flash. He's a bit of a brute, but agrees to keep their secret. For now.

As Peter turns 15, he and Flash become closer friends, and when he gets kidnapped with some other random kids, Peter and the other two are hit on their trail.

Turns out Norman Osborn is kidnapping kids to try and fuse them with Venom.

By the time they get there, Venom has already killed the rest of the kids. Spidey reaches Flash as he's injected with Venom. His DNA combined with the tweaked experiment allows Venom to successfully bind with Flash, and Peter busts him out.

Flash joins them at the hideout.

At this point in time, Peter is almost 15, Amadeus and Miles are 12, and Flash is 14.

Fury has been keeping a very close eye on Peter, and his interest is only peaked when another two kids show up, both with similar powers to Spiderman's. Interesting....

Amadeus works on his own suit, and the others gadgets and suits, with Peter's help. Flash and Peter become a good crime-fighting team, with Miles popping in whenever they let him. At this time, they aren't getting Amadeus join them until he finishes his suit.

Peter and Flash have their run-ins and team-ups, but they aren't close to any other heroes. They're too wary about someone finding out about their little spider family.

I'm not sure how Ben joins the group. I'm on the fence about having him join like he does in canon, or some other made-up disaster.

By the way, I will try to incorporate stuff from the show into here, but some things will be different. Like, no Rhino or Vulture (for now anyways) and the Fury will mesh the Ultimates and New Warriors together at the beginning as he recruits them. Their hero timelines will be pretty much the same, so our boys will have a lot more experience and adventures under their belts. Anyway:

Ben joins the group, and for a while all is well. He doesn't patrol as often as the other ones do, preferring to stay behind with whichever spiderling got left behind.

They only take one of them out at a time most nights, so they can keep a better eye on them.

When Peter doesn't immediately jump on board, Fury not-so-subtly threatens Peter's family.

Peter joins to keep his brothers out or S.H.I.E.L.D's grasp.
