26. Osakagura Comic - Sharing Dreams

Madoka is an effective foil for Homura in how mental illnesses is often treated by society as is shown by fans of PMMM. She is lacking in self-esteem and self-worth to the point of actively seeking to martyr herself. She feels as if the only way that her existence can be maid worthwhile and that she can make up for being such a burden is by dedicating her life to others. She feels she must suffer in order to make the lives of others as good as possible because she is worth nothing otherwise.

Homura, on the other hand, doesn't have that same perspective. She doesn't necessarily think her life is worthless or that she must suffer endlessly to have worth. She has a goal that requires suffering to achieve, and she actively seeks for it to be over, whether she accomplishes it or not. She doesn't feel like she needs to dedicate herself to the lives of others. She is, however, obsessed with Madoka, and most of her identity has been subsumed by this obsession. She is nothing without her, and so she must do everything she can to save her from herself (and Kyubey). She isn't suffering for the sake of suffering or to make herself feel better. She is suffering because Madoka demands it.

From the perspective of society and demonstrated by fans of PMMM, Madoka's self-hatred is seen as selflessness. It is seen as virtuous. Destroying yourself to help others is seen as a saintly attribute.
