i think something people dont understand is like. even the people who Hate certain male characters don't give them nearly as much shit as they do the women and 90% of the time they literally aren't cognizant of it. like that's how engrained the bias is. that's what we talk about when we say "cullen gets way more leeway compared to most of the women" despite cullen being one of the most polarizing characters on the tumblr side of fandom─people will write entire essays about why he was underwritten and if x was different then he would be a good character or if only the writers were more competent we would have gotten the nuance of him etc etc

but then when it comes to characters like josephine or bethany? they're just boring. they don't get long nuanced discussions on their writing. they are boring and flat. vivienne and sera are just bitchy and stupid and their motivations are trash. aveline is a frigid cop with no depth to speak of. meredith is purely evil and purely wrong and has no redeeming traits or complexity and ANY discussion of her beyond this objective fact is guaranteed to be met with hostility. these characters get no consideration even in meta analysis whereas cullen or anders or oh my god even oghren 😭 are at LEAST acknowledged as being products of their writing with promising potential. the way fandom is structured, there is no place for women to be allowed to be anything less than perfect and even THEN they're treated as inferior for being too "boring".

it is not a coincidence that people will talk for hours about the complexities and potential issues that were mishandled in cullen but if you say even a fraction of that about SERA people lose their fucking minds. it's still misogyny even if he has haters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
