Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.
I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'
A few beautiful pieces of pottery by @calendae-creations. If you'd like to support another queer disabled artist I highly recommend. Beautiful pottery, crochet, hand-twisted havdalah candles, jewelry and more. Their shop is here if you'd like to look

So just to let folks know what's going on
So first of all: let me tell everybody how things went with the new glasses.
Briefly: they're brilliant. The new varifocals work way better than earlier versions of them have routinely done. (This is apparently secondary to the way my eyes continue to change shape as I get older. It continues to make me snicker that I'm getting Iess nearsighted as I age. "So," I said to my Eye Lady, "if I can manage to live to, like, a hundred and twenty-five, I'll be twenty-twenty?" She gave me sort of a cockeyed look. "Well... you'll still be astigmatic. As for the rest of it, let's see how things go...") The reading glasses are no good for the computer: they’re genuinely just for reading. ...But this is okay, because the varifocals work fine for computer work. So THAT whole business has turned out more than satisfactorily... and thanks once more, from the bottom of my heart, to all those who helped out. ❤️
And get this. I went out to lunch after picking the new glasses up, and in the middle of lunch found myself paper-outlining a paranormal police procedural trilogy. (headclutch) So that went well. ...And no, I can't tell anybody anything about the plotting on these: it's too soon. But this looks like something of a change of writing voice (and thematic material) for me: darker than usual, maybe a touch grittier. We'll see how this group of works sets itself up as work gets going. (Other works further along in progress are in front of these right now, but that's fine. Giving things time to mature is never a problem.)
Anyway: typically enough, some other unexpected health junk that had been behaving itself during the spring then started kicking up cranky in June and over the last couple of weeks. (eyeroll) I don't want to get into more detail than necessary about this, but it's an outgrowth of the internal problems that have made me give up long-distance travel. It's required a goodish outlay of cash, and has resulted in me falling behind on my rent.
My landlord is being really easygoing about this, but nonetheless I'd very much like to get caught up on this before it gets any worse. (As being behind this way, I'm finding, is increasingly interfering with my work... especially as that's now become so much easier to get to grips with due to the new glasses.)
So it seems to me that this is a good time to repeat the Summer Reading Sale over at Ebooks Direct!
I imagine lots of people here know the drill. Everything's cheap, and the ebook bundles are all being held at their lowest price points for the duration (meaning specifically the "All The Wizardry" bundle, the Middle Kingdoms series bundle, the LGBTQ Pride collection, and the Feline Wizardry bundle—Even our "Give Me Everything You've Got" collection, which is the whole ebook store in one package, has had a bit knocked off.
So could I get folks to reblog this post so that people who might not have caught one of these sales before can do so now if they want to? Please & thank you!
And additionally: for those who're already up to the gunwales in ebooks and don't need any more, but still want to help out with the rent situation—if you'd like instead to drop something into my Ko-Fi, it'd be very welcome. And if you feel like doing this, I thank you very much in advance! 🙂

...So that's the news from Lake Wobegon for the moment. ...Now to slip outside and give the potted plants a potful or so of water as an evening drink. They've been suffering from the (unusual-for-us) local heat wave, there's a wildfire watch on (leading to a ban on selling portable BBQs), and we're also having a ban on watering things with a hose at the moment. (sigh) One thing after another...
Anyway, thanks again, folks.

I love mammals because like 20% of them look made up
For native Australian mammals, 50%.
You're so right like what the fuck is going on with bilbies
They're doing their best
A bilby for your viewing pleasure.
oh look it’s the easter bilby coming to deliver hot cross buns!
FUN AUSTRALIAN MAMMAL FACTS!!!! Antechinus are a small rat thing. The males never live to be over a year old because every year during breeding season they have so much sex for so long and so hard that their tiny little hearts give out and they die of exhaustion or just not eating for several days. Every single year every single man of the species dies because they have too much sex. As an asexual this is very funny to me.
Bonus: Woylies are a type of kangaroo
^^ This sucker is fully grown
Double bonus: Both of these animals are very endangered and not well known so there aren't many programs that are protecting their habitat or rehabilitating them. Tell people about the sex rats to be a wildlife warrior!!
Reblog for Australian deathfuck rats!

Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

Thinking hard about the upcoming work schedule
This has by far been the most laborious part of reconstructing the DDCom website: importing and correcting the images and meta for the novels.
I've kept having thoughts like "Will this never end?", "Why did I write all these books?", and occasionally "HOW did I write all these books? When dd I eat? When did I pee? When did I... " ...well, never mind, when you're married to @petermorwood, some things damn well take precedence. :)
But look at this. (I can't fit the whole "Books/Novels" page in here at the moment: but this is the bottom of it.)
The bottom line there contains books 55, 56, 57, 58, and 59.
That gap-without-a-novel-60 is going to drive me around the bend. I am now feeling around in my head for a book I could write in a week or two. (Short fiction will NOT work for me. I don't care what other writers call “books” [and the all-too-willing conflation of the terms “book” and “ebook” frankly embarrasses me]. In my head, novels are at least 70K words. I have standards to uphold.)
I am currently weighing several different projects in The Hand Of The Mind to see what, if completed, might fit into that empty spot in the next couple of weeks.
Don't mistake me. I will ABSOLUTELY write to spite that empty spot. :) (And one possibility that I'm now weighing carefully is [mostly] a Carmela story: Young Wizards: The Chocolate Wars.)
Let's see where this goes. Meanwhile: want to assist this effort? Reference this post and see what it suggests to you. And thanks! 😄
(BTW, just a note for folks who may be wondering if I need help with the website end of this: I have been building our household websites [hand-coded in HTML initially, because what else was there?…] since the mid-1990s. Anything I need to learn about managing Elementor—currently my preferred site builder since I became a Cranky Older Coder—I can find online. [Though the weary techbro-who-loves-to-hear-his-own-voice-drone-on-and-on quality of these does pain me.] I also have expert [and paid] professional assistance at the this-year migration end for the site as a whole. But many thanks to all those who've offered assistance.)
OK SO! As an 8th generation Texan, I have some experience with heat that Can And Will Kill You.
That said, I've been getting a lot of questions from friends asking for advice on dealing with this bullshit, especially if you're somewhere where air-conditioning isn't widely available.
1. Electrolytes. Everyone tells you to hydrate, but if you're sweating balls and flushing yourself out with fluid, you're not just losing water, you're losing salt. You don't need to buy those fancy liquid IV packs if you don't want to; I literally just dump a little pack of salt in my water bottle every now and then because I stole a shit ton of them from my school's café last semester because they were free. This is to keep yourself from passing out. Sports drinks or salty foods work too.
2. Get yourself a fan. Any sort of handheld thing that can blow air on you. Don't use your own hand as a fan because you'll exert more energy than it's worth.
3. If you are immediately feeling hot, you are going to try and get ice, a damp cloth, or something vaguely cool, and you are going to press it to the inside of your wrists, the back of your neck, and behind/under your ears. The veins/arteries are really close to the skin here which I believe is most of why this works so well for cooling you down.
4. Pressure points aside, just pour water on yourself. If you need to regulate your body temp, do so. No one is judging you, I promise.
5. SUNSCREEN PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THE SUN IS A DEADLY LAZY
6. Get yourself a UV / SPF shirt. Something lightweight that will shield you, in a material that will cool you down. You can also get it all the way wet and then wear it, if that's viable for you. You won't be walking around dripping—it'll just cool you down significantly.
7. I've seen some people talk about putting clothes, especially things like socks, underwear, and hijabs into the freezer overnight? Have never done this personally but fair enough. Same principle as above.
8. If you feel yourself getting hot, say something early. Heat stroke is no joke. "A cold baby dies, a hot baby dies" applies to adults too.
9. If it's dry heat, stay in the shade. If it's the humidity getting you, godspeed.
10. Don't open the windows when it's hot. This is a trap. You think the air flow will help. But the air is hot and not your friend. Windows stay closed unless you specifically want the outside air coming in.
That's all I can think of right now off the top of my head but feel free to add more!
