I really need to both rewatch the whole live action and reread the whole novel but in my head LWJ does not respect order and authority and systems the way LXC does. Lan Wangji likes rules because he’s autistic but if he decides he doesn’t want to follow the rule actually then he just won’t. Lan Xichen actually doesn’t like rigid rules and believes in nuance he’s just also plagued by moral OCD and needs structures in place to reassure himself that he’s a good person who does the right thing. This is why Lan Wangji survives his losses with his sense of identity intact and Lan Xichen does not.

I do agree with this with a small addition; Lan Wangji’s disobiedence of the rules he doesn’t like mostly starts after he meets Wei Wuxian. I also need to reread the books, but an easy example is the scene in CQL in which JC, WWX, NHS ánd LWJ are punished for their night drinking even though Lan Wangji was not a willing participant. He STILL believes he should be punised just because he did it and he doesn’t really think about why he did it (Edit: I am aware he gets punised after this as well; however, he isn’t willing the way he is in this scene and mostly accepts it as the consequence he knows he is going to get). Then, the longer he knows Wei Wuxian and the more he starts to love him, the more he starts thinking along the lines OP described, yet still mostly when it concerns Wei Wuxian. MDZS-Lan Wangji post-canon still seems to like sleeping at nine, for example, but if Wei Wuxian is there later he’ll just wait. He likes the bland Cloud Recesses foods, but for Wei Wuxian he’ll cook something different.

The one thing that does stray from this is when Toddler Wangji insists on going up the mountain to his mothers’ cabin; but this is the only example of early disobedience to the rules I can think of and it doesn’t even really disobey the rules. The only thing it truly points out is that, at the core, Lan Wangji’s disobedience and stubborness get triggered when it concerns someone he really, deeply loves.

(There is a striking difference here between CQL!Lan Wangji and MDZS!Lan Wangji btw. In CQL, Wei Wuxian didn’t commit most of the attrocities ascribed to him. Lan Wangji rightfully believes he’s innocent and as such chooses to disobey the rules to stick by what he knows is right. MDZS!Wei Wuxian, however, DID commit most of the attrocities ascribed to him, even if he had ‘good intentions.’ Lan Wangji seems to compare these attrocities to the ones other people commited out of ‘justice’ and decides that, in this world where there is no black and white, he is going to do right by the one person he truly loves. In the books, as such, Lan Wangji strays further from the rules laid out for him).

See, to me he just looks obedient because of his aforementioned autistic love of rules, but the the exception of the Gentian House protest is meant to indicate that he's always prioritized his own internal sense of Rightness over external authority, even if most of the time his internal values align with the external rules of his environment.

my read on the post-drinking punishment is. He assigns himself the punishment out of anger at WWX; he is very bad at expressing his feelings and this is his most effective way to communicate his unhappiness. WWX is blase about his own punishment but disconcerted and upset about having gotten LWJ punished, and LWJ gets to be right next to him being all martyred and stoic and angry while they're being hit. Also it's a self harming coping mechanism to deal with his nascent gay crisis. I think we have some evidence of LWJ adopting this maladaptive tendency from a young age- the kneeling outside Gentian House, self harming after kissing WWX on Phoenix Mountain, the branding etc.

Totally agree with you on the really big difference WWX's degree of culpability creates between book Wangji and CQL Wangji and that's why I feel I really need to refamiliarize myself with both canons to be definitive in my character analysis. From what I remember, CQL!Wangji is very obviously rebellious, while book!Wangji's inner motivations are a little more obscure. But for the moment I believe that in both canons, LWJ returns from the Burial Mounds and accepts the whipping punishment both as the only form of protest he is capable of (doing this thing was so important that I am willing to accept this consequence, and thereby force you to acknowledge how important it was) and as self harm and punishment for failing WWX. not because he has any regret or thinks he deserves to be punished for rule breaking.
