It's a quiet thing, love. Always hand-in-hand with fear because they both often creep up too close and take everything from him eventually. It's the subtle ache in his heart he feels when the sun goes down and the chilly wind blows too hard for him to sit still and admire a beautiful thing, dying. Even so it remained, and he carried it willingly, for he knew no other companion.
But growing up meant love could be loud. And not in an overwhelming way that reminded him of running endlessly from shadows that never solidified. In a way that was safe, like the bright light of day that chased all of the fear away with its comforting chaos. It's weird at first-everything he'd ever loved he feared just as much...what was love without fear?
Freedom.
He almost hopes they stay strangers forever, so they never run out of things to talk about.
It's a boisterous thing, love. Fraught with demands and an image that's larger than him, far too large to support on his own. Could be conflated with admiration, since they're both just as fleeting. It's the tidal wave of voices and faces he'll drown in, but the world buzzes, chants his name too loudly for him to ever rest comfortably anywhere. Even so, he failed to cultivate it since he never stayed anywhere long enough to let it grow.
But getting older meant love could be quiet. And not in a shallow way that reminded him of all the people who pretended so they could get something out of him, too. In a way that was terrifying, like the waves of an ocean he refused to go near that, in spite of everything, refused to wash away the name this kid had written in the sand as if it was meant to be eternal. It's frustrating at first-why was he so afraid this one would slip out of his fingers when all he's ever done is throw caution to the wind? What was love entangled with fear...?
Family.

It was so difficult to sleep, with all the thoughts buzzing around in his brain.
As was typical at night, they weren’t the pleasant ones.
Sonic’s asleep next to him, though the slightly increased distance did not go unnoticed by him, though he tried not to make a fuss about it, since he was allegedly too old for these comforts now.
He seemed peaceful, in spite of the way he’d yelled at him earlier-and he just guesses it’s an older brother thing to be privileged like that.
He hadn’t meant to disobey him, it’s just that Sonic was always poking his head into danger just in time for the low-grade explosives to detonate.
The fish…were a weird touch. At least it was something different to get pelted by as he flew to Sonic’s rescue only to discover he wasn’t even there. He didn’t even need him.
His brother rolls over in his sleep, and he can see the small smile that curved onto his face that erased the contrasting worried frown he’d worn not a few hours earlier.
He couldn’t be rid of it that easily.
“Didn’t I tell you to wait back there?”
Sonic never yelled, but he was coming close. He threw away the piece of rope clenched in his fist, frayed from where he’d sawed into it like it was actively burning him.
His words fail, and any excuse he could have thought to placate him evaporated in the heat of his brother’s frustration.
“Yeah…but-”
“But you didn’t do it!”
He just wanted to save him…to distance himself from that all too familiar hostage scenario that burdened his soul more than he probably burdened his big brother.
He remembered wanting to ask him that. To see if it was really true.
But he was afraid of the answer. And the yelling. He just wanted it all to stop so he could go back to making dinner and sharing chores with him.
“I’m sorry, Sonic.”
He seemed pretty surprised by the lack of argument, and nervously backpedaled a bit, but he’d seen how annoyed he’d been at having to rescue him he was and there was no going back.
It’s not that he didn’t believe Sonic when he said he was important to him…
He just didn’t understand why.
The thoughts eat away at him in the darkness, and he considers waking his brother to ask if he could reignite the fire for him, since he wasn’t allowed yet.
But…
He looks so peaceful he doesn’t want to bother him.
The sadness set in rapidly when he realizes he’s always the reason that tranquility gets obliterated. If anyone deserved to live in peace, it was Sonic. He always fought so hard for it, for them both.
Bad guys disturbed the peace, he remembers Sonic saying once…and it accidentally formed a tangible link between him and the absolute worst person he knew that he can’t stand.
He wasn’t a bad guy, right?
Just then, there’s a noise off in the distance that sounded distinctly like distress. His ears strain to confirm, and he almost reaches out to shake Sonic awake, but-
He shook his head and slowly inches out of his sleeping bag.
He could do this.
I’m not a bad guy and I’m going to prove it.
He flew off in the direction of the sound, leaving Sonic there to dream about all the things he was about to do on his own.
Whoever it was sounded as down and out as he felt, and it softens him since he could understand. They could both probably use a friend right now.
That’s why he doesn’t hesitate to approach the oddly clad stranger who dwarfs him, and tries his best to keep him from wailing, though coming closer only causes him to realize how familiar he smells.
Why was it always fish?
“Hi!” His attempts to cut through the midnight screeching were successful, and the stranger pauses to look at him, “I’m here to help you!”
It didn’t exactly sound convincing, apparently, as the stranger only blinked at him like he’d just figured out where he was.
“Your name? It’s far too dark to see out here-”
“I’m Tails, nice to meet you! Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
“Ah, that’s right…I should be now that you’re here! Allow me to show you.”
He’d sounded sweet enough, and as his pride swelled at his words his stomach couldn’t help but instinctively sink for a reason he wouldn’t know until later.
The stranger grabs at his own hands to shake them firmly but doesn’t let go.
He sounds happy to see him, but he was blinded both by the darkness and his own desperation to prove himself to see the way a devilish grin snaked across the stranger’s face as he led him away into the night.
